Marriage Story Review

"They're saying this is for Adam Driver what Kramer vs Kramer was for Dustin Hoffman. More about him than about her.  Scarlett, to me, is the open question. By now it's Driver vs Phoenix for best actor." - Melchiades - Andrew

"Mini-shutout to Alda, whom I loved and thought did absolute wonders in his what, 3 or 4 scenes. Great review!" -Alex

92nd Oscars. Oscar Contenders of 2019 (for the 2020 Ceremony) - For prediction, discussion, entertainment purposes only

 discuss on the blog

SEPT 30th PREDICTIONS

Tier 1 -Predictions

The strange story of this race is that Netflix has half the field ... at least in terms of contenders (Driver, Murphy, Sandler, Pryce, and DeNiro). The question is whether that shotgun approach rather than a concentrated attack -- as they've done in the past -- can work. We think yes and no. Adam Driver is practically a done deal given the miracle performance but the others are much iffier prospects given the strong proper theatrical competition.

Best Actor looks more exciting than Best Actress with any of the top ten here feeling like they could very well be nominated This is SO rare.

Adam Driver
35 yrs old | 1 nomination
MARRIAGE STORY
Nov 6th

Once Oscar notices you a prime follow up project can make you a "regular" . He's sensational in this Noah Baumbach drama.

Joaquin Phoenix
44 yrs old | 3 noms
THE JOKER
Warner Bros
Oct 4th

Prestige actor + great reviews + sure box office hit. And it's the only comic book role that's ever thrilled Oscar voters. We've already seen three Oscar winners do this role (Nicholson, Leto, and Ledger)

Antonio Banderas
58 yrs old | never nominated
PAIN AND GLORY
Oct 4th

He gives his best performance ever (Cannes Best Actor win!) for playing a version of his own auteur in their 7th collaboration. The Laundromat will help his profile, too.

Christian Bale
45 yrs old | 4 noms | 1 win
FORD V FERRARI
Nov 15th

One of Oscar's favourite actors and he's dependably gripping again as a hotheaded race car driver in this true story.

Eddie Murphy
1 nomination
DOLEMITE IS MY NAME
Oct 4th

People love him in this film about a blacksploitation star. His chief vulnerability might be that Netflix has too many contenders this year -- who will they be able to focus on well enough?

Tier 2 - Or Maybe It'll Be

Leonardo DiCaprio
44 yrs old | 5 noms | 1 win
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
July 26th

Leo loosens up beautifully in comedies and this is his best performance since The Departed. That said Oscar sometimes take long breaks from actors after "overdue" campaign wins.

Adam Sandler
53 yrs old | never nominated
UNCUT GEMS
Dec 13th

Critics have gone wild for his desperate energetic performance in this drama about a jeweler up to his eyeballs in debt. Will Oscar?

Jonathan Pryce
71 years old | never nominated
THE TWO POPES
Release TBA

Real life character and he's never been nominated which might actually help given his long career. But Netflix is pushing multiple men in this category and something's gotta give.

Robert DeNiro
75 yrs old | 7 noms | 2 wins
THE IRISHMAN
Nov 1st

Sentiment and nostalgia (a reunion with Scorsese) could help him back into the race regardless of the movie or quality of his performance. Will the de-aging prove distracting?

Taron Egerton
29 yrs old | never nominated
ROCKETMAN
May 31st

Oscar worships both music biopics and straight actors pretending to be gay. But doing your own singing is not the draw that it once was (sigh) and after Bohemian Rhapsody they might feel "we just did that" though this film is so much more deserving.

Tier 3 - We might be underestimating...

Sir Ian McKellen
79 yrs old | 2 noms
THE GOOD LIAR
Nov 15th

Sure to be entertaining as a con man and he's great with Dame Helen . Still, Oscar has been unkind to him in the past and the film has no awards buzz so it'll need to be a hit to push this notion.

Robert Pattinson
33 yrs old | never nominated
THE LIGHTHOUSE
Oct 19th

He's quite fantastic in this cold feverish oddity. But it's a strange film and Oscar is more likely to latch on to Willem Dafoe with whom theyre already attached.

Brad Pitt
51 yrs old | 3 noms *in acting*
AD ASTRA
Sept 20th

Though he's overdue for a win and winning good reviews, the attention will be for his Hollywood performance in the other category. Competition too strong for a double nom.

Matthew Rhys
44 years old | never nominated
A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN...
Nov 22nd

He's reliably strong in this film and he'll also be on their minds due to The Report. That Emmy win and industry goodwill will help but Hanks is the takeaway.

Edward Norton
49 yrs old | 3 nominations
MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN
Release TBA

He's playing a detective who suffers from Tourette's syndrome and "showy" is what they nominated Norton for. That said, it's crazy thick competition this year.
