This was perhaps a bad idea since I'm likely to forget said laundry exists in 1/2 an hour. Once again, to borrow Tiffany's sound advice from Silver Linings Playbook I warn myself "Calm down, crazy."

So sad John Hawkes didn't get nominated. And Marion. Kidman I expected a snub but not those two.
They just don't like women directing.
Best thing that (I think) hasn't been mentioned yet? THE INTOUCHABLES snub. So over-rated - it's as if that branch actually had some taste this year!
Given the directing nominations, looks like Lincoln has a pretty clear shot at the win now. I can't see anyone other than Spielberg winning Director.
I guess Tommy Lee Jones has his second Oscar locked up now, I did love Emma's 'he's won before' after each nominee's name was read out.
Supporting Actress was so weird, they sure do love Amy Adams, can she be a surprise winner, she has 4 nominations now, they might think she's due. The minute Weaver was announced I knew that SLP would do well in the other categories.
Best Actress is very strong and it could have been so so disastrous.

After maybe Affleck and Bigelow, I think the biggest snub/surprise is that Les Intouchables didn't get nominated. And I am not complaining in the least.

'Life of Pi' with 11 after 'Lincoln's 12.
I sincerely hope it doesn't get shut out because I can totally see it going 0 for 11. Otherwise, that tally is the most surprising to me. So, with the Affleck/Bigelow combo snub, is it safe to say 'Lincoln' is the odds on fave now? Ugh.
I'd take 'Life of Pi' over it...
The Hitler joke was awful. Is that the type of humor we'll get next February?
I guess that's the end for Kathryn Bigelow... Unless another war breaks out soon for her to munch on.

I wouldn't be surprised if Amy Adams won...they could work that "she's due" argument in her favor and, well, she kind of is after 4 nominations.
Reactions:
Best Picture- Quite happy with the list, but they might as well should've done 10, and given The Master a nom as well.
Best Director- Seriously WTF! No Affleck! He was the frontrunner to win. And no Bigelow as well! And while the Haneke nod is a welcome one, the Russell one is totally undeserving. And Zeitlin's is a puzzling one given that they had Tarantino, PT Anderson and Hooper to choose from.
Best Actor- No complaints at all. Very pleased for Phoenix.
Best Actress- Again, no complaints, though I was banking on Cotillard to make it. Nevertheless, quite happy to see Wallis make it, and not Weisz whose ascent was mysterious and troubling.
Best Supporting Actor- The fifth spot was up for grabs between the Django guys, and even though I'd have liked to see DiCaprio make it, Waltz is just as deserving. Talk about a boring category though... all previous winners :-)
Best Supporting Actress- Apart from the Weaver nom, everything else is fine. But that nom hurts, especially since comes at the cost of Kidman.
Why is that "the end" for Bigelow? That's short-sighted in terms of her career.
Best Actor: Interesting that Phoenix got it over Hawkes DDL for the win
Best Actress: Surprised at the Cotillard snub. Lawrence or Chastain to win
Best Supporting Actor: Expected except for Waltz replacing DiCaprio. Jones to win
Best Supporting Actress: Weaver replaces Maggie Smith. I think Hathaway will winn, but if Field does snag it, I expect someone else to win Supporting Actor other than Jones
Best Song: Interesting that Adele is an Oscar Nominee the year they are feting Bond. Could win. Also is this the first time that the host is an Oscar Nominee??
Best Foreign Film: I have to say YEAH CANADA for War Witch!!! Won't win, but Congrats to Kim Nguyen! Question I have is what is up with Our movies that they have such Weinstein power in this category. When Barbarian invasions was nominated there was such a drought of Canadian nominees and now in the past few years, they've always made the short list and now for the past three years, Oscar nod! How are we becoming powerful in this category for a default nod? and I thought War Witch was going to be a poor choice this year compared to the two previous years!
Odd that we all pretty much discounted the possibility of Snow White and the Huntsman getting a Visual Effects nomination, and yet...

The good news: Silver Linings Playbook becomes the 14th movie in Oscar history to be nominated for all 4 acting categories.
The bad news: of those movies only twice has that film won Best Picture and the last time was all the way back in 1953! (From here to eternity)

And then some crazy things, a mix of good (Jackman/Washington! Riva and Haneke, wow! Classy as hell BP line up!) and bad (Bigelow, Weaver, Looper/Perks miss Screenplay).
But mostly, YAY BEASTS!!!
Such Oscar discussions never get anywhere because people keep taking what they thought WOULD be the case and concluding that it thus should have been. I'm talking about the so called 'snub' discussion on the best director category.
Also: yay for no BULLY in Documentary. And no arthouse in Animated Film this year (which I predicted, but I had RISE OF THE GUARDIANS instead of PIRATES)
Too upset over the complete lack of taste for THE MASTER and Paul Thomas Anderson. Never complain. You're the reason why we can't have nice things.

It's an exciting, unexpected director slate in a tough year. I like it. (Though I blame that tacky "I Am Woman" exit music after Bigelow's win a few years back for ruffling their feathers.)
WOW, Anna Karenina did better than expected...I wonder how close Keira was to a Best Actress nomination.
Pretty shocked at some major categories! Best Director was probably the one category which made me gasp because of Affleck's and Bigelow's snubs. It just goes to show how contentious this year was. I wouldn't be surprised if Bigelow, Affleck and Tarantino were closely behind, but didn't garner enough no. 1 votes. And I'm sure the torture campaign affected Bigelow in this respect.
I'm predicting Haneke will win for Best Director. And, I think Emanuelle Riva is now looking very strong to steal an Oscar from Chastain and Lawrence. I would be very pleased by that, but not surprised. The Academy responded very well to that film, and I'm sure the praise for Riva will just continue to ascend among members.
Hathaway, Day Lewis and TLJ have their Oscars secured.
It will be a split year with Lincoln winning for Best Picture.
I'm just relieved that Joaquin got in. I was really bracing myself for that snub. Although I'm very sad John Hawkes was left out. If it were up to me, Daniel Day Lewis would've been the snub in Best Actor.
I cannot with Seth McFarlane. I seriously don't know how I'm gonna get through the telecast with him. Copious drinking, I guess. I just do not get him; he is so unlikable and grating to me.
Love the nominations for Beasts of the Southern Wild, Amour and Moonrise Kingdom. And Anna Karenina and Skyfall did really well in the technical categories!
They clearly loved Silver Linings Playbook but I just can't see it winning best picture. I think it's between Lincoln and Life of Pi. Les Miserables doesn't have an editing nod but it could still pull off a surprising win.
After having watched The Impossible, it wouldn't surprise me if Naomi Watts won. But maybe I'm just underestimating Silver Linings Playbook.
Putting it out there: I think there's a 51% chance Lincoln does not win. Either Life of Pi or Silver Linings !! I hope the latter !! I think Beasts has a solid chance too ! Too many less heady, lighter films compared to Lincoln, the film people love to respect. I suspect it has many first-time goers (like the rest of the population who has felt compelled to go, given BO), but I don't think it has *love* compared to the others. Life of Pi is the right kind of new agey for the larger Academy membership, I think! It's just possible that Life, Silver and Beasts don't have enough to beat Lincoln (e.g., those three get 70% total -- 25, 25, 20, e.g.-- but Lincoln gets 30% (for instance)).
Stunned by Affleck's snub. Hope Argo can somehow still win Best pic but Lincoln probably will win now. They loved Silver Linings!! The Amour love is so deserved. RIVA FOR THE WIN! Best Actress the most exciting catergory, and Nathaniel's favourite! Pleased Prometheus made it in for Visual Effects. Happy for Watts. Echo the sentiment that Supporting Actor is dull.

Philip, Weinstein isn't distributing War Witch in the US. It's some smaller company called Music Box, which is why there's been no real push for it in the US media. I'm greatly relieved that it got a nomination...and I'm hoping it might pull out an upset win.
Jacki Weaver--no way. Her nom was well deserved for Animal Kingdom, but NOT SLP!
SLP was enjoyable but I would have put Affleck in instead of Russell.

I like Seth MacFarlane's humor in an animated form but his schtick and delivery this morning was way more cringe-worthy than Ricky Gervais. Insulting the role of a director? Really? NOT looking forward to the Broadcast with Seth at the podium.

For holding her own in a cast of heavy hitters, for conveying the decades-long struggle of being the least crazy among the crazies, for turning a role light on dialogue into an opportunity to emote beautifully and achingly with her face, I could not be more thrilled that the academy recognized Jacki Weaver. I get where the lack of showiness and screen time can lead to some idea of her not doing anyhting, but for me she's this year's Shoreh Aghdashloo- a performance that could probably have looked like nothing on paper, but dripped with genuine, honest humanity on the screen.
Nathaniel, I guess you are right. The previously presumed rivals of Lincoln (Argo, ZDT, Les Miz) all not doing so well and missing out director nom. There's no way Life of Pi is winning top prize, it's too trivial to win the top prize.

I'm actually quite surprised how The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises were pretty much completely shut out, I thought they would have had a much stronger showing in the tech categories.
I think Lincoln looks like the film to beat but Lif of Pi did really well and I could see a split between those two. Life of Pi for director and Lincoln for picture or the other way around. We have to wait for the Guilds.
