5 Thoughts I Had While Looking At Those Suicide Squad Posters

Manuel here. Guys. There’s a bunch of new posters for the new Viola Davis movie! The two-time Oscar nominee may well be very busy with her TV gig, How to Get Away with Murder (anyone watching season 2? Did we jump prematurely from the never-quite sudsy enough show?), but she’ll next be seen in one of the Internet’s most anticipated films of the year: Suicide Squad.

The DC anti-heroes film released a number of gorgeous character posters ahead of the film's trailer premiere later this week, that had my mind reeling. [more...]

FIVE THOUGHTS

• COLOR! To advertise what still looks to be a broody superhero flick, sure, but how refreshing. This is definitely one way of letting everyone know you’re not playing the same game as Batfleck vs SuperCavill: Dawn of Gal Gadot. Love the deranged yet playful look of these posters.

• It’s also a great blending of two current if tired trends in movie posters: the minimalist poster and the character poster. But it works here since so many of these characters need some sort of introduction for those of us not as knowledgeable about DC’s slate.

• My favorite is obviously Harley’s. I have high hopes for Margot Robbie (she has the best moment in the teaser) though clearly this film will thrive or fall on Jared Leto’s take on the Joker. Will the Oscar winner be able shed Ledger’s iconic portrayal, especially seeing as it’s so fresh in people’s minds. It has only been eight years.

• And on that note: Can any superhero film’s marketing top The Dark Knight’s? Cause “Worst. Heroes. Ever.” is as good a play for that as we’ve seen in a long time, give or take a Deadpool. We know it's gonna be a big year for caped crusaders, but maybe these two gutsier flicks will prove enough of a counter programming move within the genre to keep the ever-growing superhero bubble from bursting?

• Sadly, despite getting fourth billing (after Joel Kinnaman?!), Viola's Amanda Waller doesn't get her own poster seeing as she's not really part of the "squad" per se. Still, it gave me an excuse to perusre her IMDb trying to see what else she has on the pipeline.

I came across news of what looks to be a project right up TFE’s alley. Davis, Catalina Sandino Moreno (!) and Ellen Burstyn (!!) are starring in Custody, written and directed by none other than James Into the Woods Lapine:

The film explores the lives of three New York City women, each from different socio-economic backgrounds whose lives unexpectedly intersect at New York Family Court.”

And just like that, any thoughts of Suicide Squad and Leto’s Joker are driven away as my inner actressexual now worries Custody will go the way of Lila & Eve. (The latter was so under the radar I even forgot about it until just now. Anyone catch it?)
