Team Experience: Favorite Globe Nods
Monday, December 12, 2016 at 8:01PM We bitched and moaned about WTF snubs and inclusions earlier so now it's time to turn those frowns upside down. We polled Team Experience about their favorite Globe nominations in movies and tv and we hope you'll answer the same questions in the comments! Ready? Here we go...
FAVORITE NOMINATION, NON-ACTING?
Manuel: Neruda for Best Foreign Language film, because at least it means Larraín can schmooze his way to the Globes even after they mistreated his other anti-biopic.
Bill: Kenneth Lonergan for Best Director. It seemed a foregone conclusion even back in January that, at the very least, Lonergan would be cited for awards this year for his screenplay. It's gratifying that his work as a director—the tightness and build of his scenes, his unfussy blocking of the ensemble, his directness—seems also to be getting noticed. The film is not merely an achievement of words and structure.
Murtada: Moonlight for Picture. It's great that this film is a frontrunner.
Margaret: 20th Century Women for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. La Bening is rightly getting showered in accolades for her beautifully funny and surprising and lovable performance, but the movie that houses it is a gem in its own right and exactly what things like the Globes' Comedy categories exist to elevate. Any person who is persuaded by this nomination to go see the film has been given a gift.
Chris Feil: Sing Street for Best Comedy/Musical. There is basically no campaign for this little gem (note the lack of a Best Original Song nomination) so this felt unlikely. This nomination will look pretty cool when everyone catches on to this movie any day now.
FAVORITE ACTING NOMINATION?
Tim: Colin Farrell, The Lobster. I took it for granted that this movie would glide throughout all of awards season without a solitary mention, and I'm glad to have been disproven so early.
Nick Davis: Colin Farrell for The Lobster, which apparently is not quite as good a movie as Deadpool. I guess I'll have to find out.
Murtada: Ruth Negga best actress drama. With Arrival's box office, Huppert dominance in critics awards and how good Hidden Figures makes us feel I thought she'd be toast. Happy to see her understated yet powerful performance continue to shine.
Manuel: Annette Bening. I keep fearing Mike Mills' wistful film will be lost in the shuffle, costing La Bening the recognition she deserves, but thankfully they came through.
Chris Feil: Hailee Steinfeld for The Edge of Seventeen. I'd mentioned in my review that a nomination for her might not be the likeliest, but I guess the world has some fairness to share after all.
Lynn: Toss-up between Viggo (yaaas!) and Hailee Steinfeld. I just saw The Edge of Seventeen the other day and she is so good in it. She shifts so naturally and seamlessly between all the different registers of being an outwardly tough, inwardly vulnerable teenage girl - from precociously angry at the world to heartbreakingly giddy at the prospect of going out with her crush to just plain heartbreaking during her final moment of emotional reckoning. That climactic scene with her brother is a little too pat from a narrative standpoint, but she nails it.
Bill: Isabelle Huppert for Elle. Proof that it may just be impossible to ignore the career achievement accolades for Huppert this year. Normally, those narrative don't make sense to me, but for Huppert, considering how she brings the same uncompromising intensity to Paul Verhoeven's Elle as she has done countless times before, it is well earned and deserved.
Eric: Wonderful to see Viggo Mortensen nail what should be a no-brainer nomination, and the continued momentum for Huppert.
Abstew: It seems a little silly to say, because it seemed so assured. But the lack of love in any other category (that score! that screenplay! the effortless and ingenious direction) makes the sole nomination for JACKIE's Natalie Portman all the more satisfying. Not only is it for her best performance to date, but now her inevitable win (fingers crossed) will not just be for her work, but for the film as a whole.
FAVORITE TV NOMINATION?
Joe Reid: Thandie Newton for "Westworld" is SO well-deserved.
Abstew: The ladies of Westworld. I know EVERYONE has an opinion on this show, but I think we can all agree if it works at all it's thanks to Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton's hosts with the most, breathing life and emotions into their programming.
Chris Feil: Olivia Colman for The Night Manager because I can just pretend that it's actually for Fleabag.
Nick Davis: Girl, you've met me. You know I don't know. I mean, I like seeing Riley Keough at least get nominated for *something* the year she was so great in American Honey.
Jose: SJP for Divorce, the show is shit, but they can't resist nominating Carrie Bradshaw (she even got a Family Stone nod!) and I will always love them for that.
Manuel: Charlotte Rampling, London Spy. If you haven't yet seen adorable moppet and Gay Twitter's boyfriend Ben Whishaw's sexy gay spy show, you really should get on it for on top of seeing Whishaw in full gay male leading man mode, you will get an icy Rampling performance to go along with the show's racy, sexy, convoluted espionage plot.
Murtada: Issa Rae for Insecure. It shouldn't be surprising since it's an HBO show but it's still amazing to see her make it.
Lynn: Issa Rae for Insecure. Everyone should be watching that show. Issa is a marvel - funny, perpetually conflicted, and so relatable even at the same time she says and does things that make you cringe.

Issa Rae securing a nomination for Insecure.
I love that Sing Street and Pride share surprise Pic nominations, though it would be nice to see it in Song. Also happy to see Kidman, who is wonderful in Lion and missing noms in a lot of critics groups. I hope she pulls off that fourth nomination.

Riley Keough, The Girlfriend Experience
Non-Acting: Gotta go with Moonlight in Picture, Director, and Screenplay. I know those nominations were a bit of a foregone conclusion, but it is still great that a black queer film is getting such attention. Considering everything else that has gone down in 2016, I'll talk whatever representation we can get.
Acting: Hailee. She was amazing in what could have been standard role/film. That Edge of Seventeen flopped at the box office really upsets me, and I hope this nomination really gets people to see the film.
TV: Mandy Moore. This Is Us can get a little too schmaltzy for my taste, but her performance truly grounds the show in reality for me. Plus, Mandy has never gotten enough respect for her acting ability, so it's nice to see the accolades starting to come in.
Colin Farrell! He's so wonderful in The Lobster and carrying that film was no easy task. One hopes it gets that Original Screenplay nod, but Farrell deserves all the love he can get for this.
And on a similar note, yay for Olivia Colman! This close to watching The Night Manager but she's so great in The Lobster, among other things, and it's great to see her get some attention while The Lobster fights to get any attention at all. Maybe she'll be this year's weird BAFTA supporting actress nominee? Who can say. I sure hope so.

It's impossible for me to pick a favorite, so many things I like a whole lot this year.
Favorite nomination is Hailee Steinfeld. Such a fantastic performance.
RILEY KEOUGH FOR THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE! She pulls off an amazing performance in a highly underrated show that is dismissed for its subject material.
Claire Foy in The Crown is deserving too. The queen is hardly emotional but she manages to shine even when everyone is trying to steal the scene from her.
The studios just fuck up the campaign for Silence and Keaton in The Founder.
The amazing Olivia Coleman was my favourite nomination, I adore her in everything. Her comedic & dramatic abilities were on display this year.
Hailee Steinfield is an actress I happen to like a lot, so pleased she is growing into her potential.
Finally, let me co-sign what @Craver said about Claire Foy. This actress was riveting in Wolf Hall, and in The Crown she shines again. She is quietly fierce.
If she were in Hollywood movies she would be considered to be the next Nicole Kidman.
Thandie Newton, in the best female television performance since Regina King in Southland. She is incredible.
Deadpool getting nominated for Actor and Comedy/Musical. I will not apologize for loving this film as much as I do. It is so out of sync with what the Globes tend to nominate (it's just so weird, crass, and meta) that I would want to celebrate the nominations even if I didn't think they were among the best choices for those categories.
My favorite of the surprises are Sing Street and Colin Farrell. Sing Street is a wonderful little movie. So much fun and very endearing. This is the type of movie that benefits from being slowly discovered and cherished as opposed to bombastically celebrated (20th Century Women too for that matter). Colin Farrell is a very deserving nomination. He's going to be my risky prediction for the oscars. I think he is well liked, famous enough and visible enough for that performance that he will break through to oscar. The Golden Globe nomination will sure help.

Oh, can I also add that I'm so happy for the scores of Moonlight and Arrival? Both are fantastic.
Nick T - The Lobster was released in the UK a year ago, so was eligible for last year's (this spring's) BAFTAs. I don't imagine they even submitted, let alone campaigned.
Don't feel sorry for Olivia - she has about 34 TV BAFTAs already (though her lack of a film nomination for Tyrannosaur still makes me sick).
In fact, next year's BAFTA actress categories should be a Film Experience collective wet dream with Olivia Colman, Julie Walters, Sarah Lancashire, Samantha Morton, Claire Foy, Sophie Okonedo, Gillian Anderson and Elizabeth Debicki all looking like possible candidates!
My favourite nominations? Thandie and Evan Rachel who both won me over in 2016 for the first time (I always found their performances in Crash and Thirteen fine but unimpressive - in Westworld they have both amazed me)
LadyEdith and Kermit--Share your love for Olivia Colman (her BAFTA acceptance speeches are awesome! Nothing at BAFTA for her work in Tyrannosaur is a travesty, but she won some other awards for it.) but I would have been happy if she had received a nod for The Lobster, Fleabag, Flowers, and oh, basically anything she was in,

Am I crazy for thinking that Greta Gerwig might actually make it into the Oscar lineup and Nicole will be the one who gets left out? Looking at who some of the smaller critics groups have nominated in that category has me thinking that maybe we've slightly overestimated her. This could just be wishful thinking on my behalf and hoping Greta does get nominated, but I was just wanting to know what you thought.
