Netflix: Narcos Again, Ed Harris Thirst, and a Sandy B Double

NATHANIEL R in Defiance, Hope Floats, Kim Darby, Netflix, Sandra Bullock, Sweeney Todd, True Grit, streaming

We've already listed up the Amazon Prime streaming offering so here's Netflix. The following titles are now streaming for your pleasure or curiousity if pleasure is an overstatement. We've freeze framed them at entirely random places and shared the first thing that came up as is our whimsical practice. Do you have any desire to see (or revisit) these?

NOW STREAMING ON NETFLIX

You ain't such an early bird yourself, baby sister

True Grit  (1969)
tfw you think about how some remakes have the exact same scene but feel so different. Did you know that the actress who played Mattie Ross, Kim Darby is still alive though she hasn't been working as an actor in about 10 years or so. I wonder what she thought of Hailee Steinfeld doing her role a handful of years back. Did you know that the original Mattie Ross was also award-nominated... but not for True Grit. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for leading actress playing a pregnant teenager in another movie the same year. something called Generations (1969)? The More You Know...

six more titles after the jump...

You're barking mad!

Sweeney Todd  (2007)
That's why they call him the Demon Barber, mum! Oh how I wish directors who took on musicals actually loved the form and cast actors who could do justice to song scores. Especially the divine nightmare of this particular score.

We represented America down here. We thought of ourselves as guys who could get shit done.

Narcos (Season 2)
The narration was really handy in Season 1 to set up the complexities of the time and place and machinations of the drug wars. I was really hoping they'd abandon it once the world-building was done (sigh). Paulina García plays Wagner Moura's mother in this and they have her in a grey wig. She is only 16 years older than Moura (sigh). I realize people have children at 16 but she's such a vibrant actress. Why you gotta age her up?

P.S. It's freaky how much Pedro Pascal looks like Burt-Reynolds-in-his-Prime as interpreted by Chiléan genes.

P.P.S. In case you missed it we interviewed two of Narcos regular cast recently: Paulina García (of Gloria/Little Men fame) and Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl)

We need to hold them off until the rest are safe.

Defiance (2008)
tfw you forgot a movie existed that starred two of your favorite working actors (pictured above) but you had no desire to see it despite their presence.

You know, you're an amazing man.

Milk Money (1994)
Melanie speaks the truth. It's easy to forget how wonderful Ed Harris is since he hasn't been working that much in successful projects lately or appears only briefly in them (see Snowpiercer) but after our recent 1984 Smackdown in which Ed Harris shamelessly fogged up the camera as two furry sad/sexy husbands (one cheating, the other cheated upon) we are reminded. Here is proof from Places in the Heart and Swing Shift (click to embiggen but not NSFW)

And we'll end with a Sandra Bullock double...

Kylie, why don't you and I go to the greenhouse.

Practical Magic (1998)
Zoinks! I had totally forgotten how many crazy good actresses are smooshed into this one witch family movie. That's little Evan Rachel Wood (!) as Kylie looking at her visiting auntie Nicole Kidman whilst Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing and Sandra Bullock huddle around.

I realize that it doesn't matter who or what or when or where the hugging happens. Sometimes you just need a hug."

Hope Floats  (1998)
Aint that the truth. Preach, Sandy B.
