Few things in the world are as steady as Marvel movies. Once every few months, one comes in and it is an EVENT. Avengers: Endgame is probably the most anticipated film sequel since The Matrix Reloaded in 2003, and though that didn't go well, it's safe to say that legions are excited again. Marvel still being Marvel, they don’t want to give too much away so the trailers have been teaser-like. The new one dropped today, so let’s do our patented Yes, No, Maybe So after the jump...
Yes
How about a shoutout to Alan Silvestri? The original Avengers theme has become iconic and that hook line provides shivers every time. Very effective throughout.
Marvel is really keeping this one close to the chest. No Thanos, no teasing of dead characters, not even an indication that Tony Stark will make it back alive. We all know that won’t stick, but let's appreciate the effort
Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is not having the best post-snap time. It looks like he is going to be taking over the role of Ronin for good measure. Hawkeye barely got a passing mention in Infinity War, but it looks like his role will be significant here
You really forget how affecting the disintegrations were until Thor re-lives them all
Frankly, I’m impressed at the different levels of Scarlett Johansson’s hair at this point. This is her seventh MCU film and no repeats yet. She even changes in the middle of this one!
There are some pairings that Marvel figured out worked very early on, and Hawkeye and Black Widow just work together. Renner and Johansson have the perfect buddy/co-worker energy and it will be on full display here
Speaking of pairings, I am all about a duo I didn’t know I needed. I have a great feeling about Rocket/War Machine
We get the Right Stuff walking scene, but it looks like everyone is in quantum suits. This is a good indication that the quantum realm/time travel will play a role
Brie Larson finally shows up at the end, and gets some face time with Chris Hemsworth. Another pair we need more of, though everyone does a great job when they're playing opposite Hemsworth.
No
Is there anyone who is watching Endgame without knowing the backstory of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America? We get it, things have changed, time has passed. Move on to the new story!
Mark Ruffalo was really great in Infinity War and they do little to nothing with him in this one. We hope he has an arc, but he barely gets a close-up!
This has little to do with the trailer, but the marketing in general. Danai Gurira’s Okoye gets a few shoutouts in the trailer and prominent placement on the poster, but isn’t even listed in the credits? Does she have a significant role to play?
Maybe So
Karen Gillan has not exactly had a lot to work with, but I enjoy her primal screeching while on the attack
Who is left that we could be missing? Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is really the only character anyone cared about who hasn’t shown any indication of showing up. How will the living Wakandans play a role?
The film has a three-hour runtime. Supposedly, these trailers only show images from the first hour of the film. It sure seems like a lot to unpack. Infinity War felt too bloated, and this might have the same issues, proving as overpacked as the movie poster.
What exactly is the plot? We know the Avengers want to bring everyone back, but they are not giving much indication of how that is going to happen
Apparently, Larson filmed this before doing Captain Marvel, and that always gives us pause. Her Carol Danvers was a surprisingly welcome characterization in her solo film, but since she shot this first, here's hoping it stays consistent throughout.
There is so much hype around this film, and there will surely be many questions about the MCU after Endgame, but for the time being, we are a resounding YES. And we won’t have long to wait. Avengers: Endgame opens in movie theaters everywhere on April 26th.
