As is our practice we've selected a couple handful of titles and frozen the films at utterly random moments without cheating (whatever comes up comes up) for this quick preview. Do any of these screencaps make you wanna watch the movie? At the bottom of the page, check out full listings for Netflix, Hulu, Prime, and HBO for the first half of March. Okay, let's go...
Ohmygosh, he is dreaaammmmy.
The Notebook (2004) on Netflix
Wait James Marsden is the other man in this movie? (You may recall I told you I hadn't seen it when Kim was writing up its famous kiss last month. Somehow I didn't know that Rachel McAdams had to choose between Marsden and Gosling? Tough life, that girl leads.) Oh and did you hear that weird story about how Netflix changed the ending to The Notebook in the UK? I wouldn't have known the difference but bizarre. How is that even legal?

What Lies Beneath (2000) on Hulu
You guys... never look at a pristine empty bathtub while holding a ouija board...
I mean, next thing you know the bathtub is going to fill itself up the second you walk around the corner and there's going to be creepy messages written in steam on the mirror. P.S. This is a great Michelle Pfeiffer star turn. She doesn't phone it in when she's doing genre, no matter how silly the premise or character (see also Ladyhawke, Batman Returns) but fully commits.
You must be the new Emily. Nice to meet you.
Devil Wears Prada (2006) on HBO NOW
I love this movie endlessly but it's one of those great loves that you forget all its flaws unless you're actually watching it and there are a lot of deadspots. But Hathaway is SO GOOD in it and never gets any credit with Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep both being such comic dynamos. Playing the straight woman is the thankless role in a comedy but she's great, too.
Isn't it nice to have visitors, mother?
Emma (1996) on Netflix
If the visitors are Toni Collette and Gwyneth Paltrow in delightful performances from their rising star years, why yes, yes it is indeed. I've never watched this back to back with Clueless but it might be amusing to do so.
This world is just an illusion.
Saving Mr Banks (2013) on Netflix
You guys, how are we going to get Emma Thompson another Oscar nomination? It's been 24 years! Remember how harsh 2013 was to two-time Oscar winners? Both Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) and Emma looked like real possibilities in the lead categories until the names were read out and both were denied again!
Let's not get queer over a crackpot idea. What the hell does the kid no anyway?
Thunderbolt & Lightfoot (1974) on Netflix
Whoa. It's so weird for Netflix to have a movie older than, like, 25 years available. Jeff Bridges received his second Oscar nomination playing "Lightfoot" at just 25 years old at the time so that's unusual in two ways: Men almost never have two nods by that age (only Mickey Rooney and Sal Mineo managed it before Jeff Bridges -- unless you want to count James Dean's posthumous nods, but though he died at 24 his nominations could have come at 25 and 26 had he lived) and it was also the movies sole nomination which you know is fairly rare in the supporting categories. What's more it wasn't even a 'prestige' genre but a crime caper with Clint Eastwood.
What are the names on the list? [CROWD ERUPTS IN SHOUTING]
Heaven's Gate (1980) on Hulu
I guess it's a Michael Cimino week on streaming? Thunderbolt and Lightfoot was his debut and this was his third feature, a career destroying flop after his sophomore effort, The Deer Hunter, took 5 Oscars. Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken and Isabelle Huppert star. It was nominated for 1 Oscar (Production Design) and 5 Razzies because the latter likes to kick you when you're down (sigh).
I'm not afraid of anything or anybody -- I never cried in my life.
So Young So Bad (1950) on Prime
Prime has a million "B" movies and exploitation titles from the 1970s but some of the earlier low budget titles are worth checking out. This one is about a reform school and a psychiatrist (Paul Henreid from Casablanca) trying to help the "bad" girls see a future for themselves. It's notable for featuring the screen debuts of both Anne Jackson (pictured above, later a Tony, Emmy, and Grammy nominee) and EGOT champ/legend Rita Moreno (then credited as Rosita Moreno).
Oh hi honey. Hey guess what? The divorce is final.
My Friend Dahmer (2017)
I know this is not the proper takeaway from an image from a movie about a notorious serial killer but I love Anne Heche so goddamn much. She acts with her whole body. Why are the auteurs not constantly knocking on her door?!
