New Blu-Ray / DVDs
• Aquaman Worth seeing for the insanity of the visuals plus an excellent villain in Patrick Wilson's Ocean Master.
• Capernaum One of last year's most visceral dramas.
• If Beale Street Could Talk See why Regina King took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
• Second Act In which JLo fools everyone with an embellished resume...
• Stan & Ollie This Old Hollywood biopic was sadly left to fend for itself in the December/January Oscar qualifying glut last year. John C Reilly and Nina Arianda are both excellent.
iTunes 99¢ Weekly Deal
• A Simple Favor Paul Feig's brilliant genre blender with ace star turns from Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick made the top ten here. If you haven't yet seen it, gather your friends, marvel at the Oscar-worthy costume design, and sip martinis together while you enjoy.
As usual there are plentiful other interesting titles for 99¢ this week, including:
Blindspotting (2018) if you missed it last year, Wait Until Dark (1967) if you need some blind Audrey Hepburn, Sweet Bird of Youth (1962) in which Geraldine Page accurately and lasciviously describes Paul Newman as "hard gold", or Dark Shadows (2012) if you're in a Tim Burton mood and will watch a hot mess if you're guaranteed Eva Green being brilliant which you are.
Bob Fosse's very disturbing Star80 (1983)
Some other titles of note discounted this week:
Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder, Fosse's Star 80 (1983), Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992) and Bridges of Madison County (1995), and Vincente Minnelli's Meet Me in St Louis (1944) which is only one of the greatest movies ever made, no biggie.
New to Streaming
Just cuz you saw those people on TV don't make 'em special.
• The Act (Hulu Series) a new anthology crime series, this season starring Patricia Arquette, Joey King, Chloë Sevigny, and AnnaSophia Robb.
• Assassination Nation (Hulu) - this one had some fans last year, though we could never quite decipher what it was from the trailers and commercials
• Cold War (Amazon Prime) - Pawel Pawlikowski's musical drama loosely based on the tragic romance of his own parents netted three very worthy Oscar nominations
• Delhi Crime (Netflix Series) - a crime drama from India
• The Dirt (Netflix) - a Mötley Crüe biopic
• Girl Most Likely (Hulu) - remember how this one with Kristen Wiig and The Bening was so buzzed and then so elusive?
• Mirage (Netflix) - a Spanish sci-fi film
