Before I was 24 I never used Halloween as an excuse to tout one of my favorite movies. I’ve been a self-described cinephile since the age of 14 and yet somehow it had never occurred to me to dress up as a character from any film, less it was an already uber-famous character like Batman and such. When I discovered that, lo and behold, there were replicas being sold of the iconic scorpion jacket from Drive, I jumped at the chance to purchase one for myself and have some Ryan Gosling cool rub off on me...

A lightbulb went off, and since then, I can’t NOT use Halloween as an excuse for celebrating a memorable character or costume from whatever movie is on the tip of our zeitgeisty tongues that year. Now I’m that guy, the movie guy on Halloween with a deep-cut outfit that’s typically only recognizable to my fellow movie guys and gals.

 Mad Max Fury Road
I have a tendency to stick around in places and phases of life a tiny bit longer than I should, whether I’m still living there or not. For years after graduating from college I spent much of my time in my university town. Some of that was due to dating my future wife who happened to live there, some of that was an inability to move on, to accept that life had changed and I was no longer in my early twenties. The Halloween of Mad Max: Fury Road was the last time I recall spending a chunk of my time in Denton, TX.

Call it a grand goodbye to the town or just another night out on the town, either way I ended up moving on not long after after we hit the streets as Furiosa and Max. I wish I could say her excellent costuming skills (she helped immensely in putting this together) was a turning point in our relationship, but I was already certain about our future before this night of thrills. Throwing together brown and tan colors, repurposed football pads, and a makeshift grill mask, this was a memorable night indeed.

Do Halloween costumes bring back times, places, and memories for you?
