Warner Bros just released the first promotional image for Barbie. Though we wouldn't normally be so excited for a corporate ploy to sell more toys we have to think there's something larger and more clever at work here...
The main reason for the faith is Greta Gerwig in the director chair and a screenplay by Greta and her partner Noah Baumbach. The synopsis is as simple as this "a doll living in 'Barbieland' is expelled for not being perfect enough, which sets off an adventure in the real world". This leads us to expect something along the fish out of water comic lines of... Enchanted?
The cast is delicious, too. Margot Robbie is Barbie, Ryan Gosling is Ken, and the supporting cast includes (deep breath) Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Emerald Fennell, Rhea Perlman, America Ferrera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Connor Swindells, Scott Evans, Hari Nef, Ritu Arya, Ncuti Gatwa, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera. The film opens July 21st, 2023. Will you be playing with this doll in theaters?
