It’s a rapidly changing world. This year’s 29th annual SAG Awards are leaving their usual home on cable for a live stream on Netflix’s YouTube channel. The 30th edition a full year from now will set the new norm (?) as SAG will begin streaming live globally on Netflix. That potentially means more viewers given Netflix’s popularity and reach, and it potentially means less as awards shows continue their trending to more niche entertainment that's exclusively for us obsessive awards nerds despite its annual attempts to appeal to everyone.
But we’re here to discuss the nominations which are upon us...
The Banshees of Inisherin & Everything Everywhere All At Once tied with 5 nominations each, which ties the record for most nominations ever at the SAG for a single film (Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, and Doubt make it a five way tie for SAG's history)
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”)
Hong Chau (“The Whale”)
Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)
Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)
Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)
Only a 3 to 5 match with the Globes (who preferred Dolly De Leon & Carey Mulligan to Hong Chau & Stephanie Hsu) so this category is still wide open going into Oscar voting over the weekend. Interesting to see no individuals from Women Talking nominated despite their Cast nomination. SAG usually double dips. SAG doesn't often line up 5 for 5 in this category so none of these women should feel totally comfortable about Oscar night plans given how overstuffed this category has felt all season. The question is, if any of them fall, will it be for Janelle Monae, Dolly De Leon, Jessie Buckley, Claire Foy, Nina Hoss, Gabrielle Union, or Carey Mulligan who have all had either buzz or precursor nominations or wins at some point in the season.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans”)
Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)
Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)
Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)
Eddie Redmayne (“The Good Nurse”)
Eddie Redmayne continues to be the awards performance we didn’t see coming in this category, despite attending the actual premiere of this movie! Will he snag his third Oscar nomination? Or will Oscar voters vary up this category a bit and if so who benefits: Brian Tyree Henry? Brad Pitt? Mark Rylance?
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Cate Blanchett (Tár”)
Viola Davis (“The Woman King”)
Ana de Armas (“Blonde”)
Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”)
Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)
Ana de Armas continues to land the key precursor nominations though twitter and online pundits had mostly written her off before the Globe nod. The lesson for all of us, year after year: no matter the performance or film or the reviews or ANYTHING ELSE, think twice before betting against biopic mimicry!
The big question is will one of these five fall to make room for Michelle Williams or Margot Robbie at the Oscars?
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Austin Butler (“Elvis”)
Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)
Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”)
Bill Nighy (“Living”)
Adam Sandler (“Hustle”)
Sandler is the surprise nominee here with the other four firmly in the “will probably be Oscar nominated” mix. That fifth spot at the Oscars is a true wild card. Sandler? Cruise? Pope? Mescal?
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
“Babylon”
“The Banshees of Inisherin”
“Everything Everywhere All at Once”
“The Fabelmans”
“Women Talking”
It’s one of those years where SAG stayed firmly on consensus opting for the five films most thought had a great chance to land here.
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
“Avatar: The Way of Water”
“The Batman”
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
“Top Gun: Maverick”
“The Woman King”
No bizarre choices this year for stunts though we weep at the omission of Everything Everywhere All At Once which definitely belonged in this category.
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series
“Andor”
“The Boys”
“House of the Dragon”
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”
“Stranger Things”
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
Steve Carrell (“The Patient”)
Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”)
Sam Elliott (“1883”)
Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”)
Evan Peters (“Dahmer”)
Paul Walter and Evan Peters both won Globes the night before these nominations but because of SAG’s strange “catch all” categories, they’re competing against each other here.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
Emily Blunt (“The English”)
Jessica Chastain (“George and Tammy”)
Julia Garner (“Inventing Anna”)
Niecy Nash Betts (“Dahmer”)
Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”)
Will Amanda Seyfried continue her trophy-magnet run or will SAG move on?
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Carrigan (“Barry”)
Bill Hader (“Barry”)
Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”)
Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”)
Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”)
None of these actors have ever won the SAG in this category. Though Hader, Martin and Short have all been nominated.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”)
Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)
Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”)
Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”)
Jean Smart (“Hacks”)
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
“Abbott Elementary”
“Barry”
“The Bear”
“Hacks”
“Only Murders in the Building”
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
Jonathan Banks (“Better Call Saul”)
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”)
Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”)
Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”)
Adam Scott (“Severance”)
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”)
Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”)
Julia Garner (“Ozark”)
Laura Linney (“Ozark”)
Zendaya (“Euphoria”)
Julia Garner, Zendaya, and Jennifer COolidge were ALL winners at the Globes for these performances. SAG has way too few acting categories given that they're the Screen Actors Guild Awards!
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
“Better Call Saul”
“The Crown”
“Ozark”
“Severance”
“The White Lotus”
