Best Hitchcock Man?

"Now this is a Sophie’s choice! Both are wonderful examples of using and subverting star personas, and the films themselves are glorious." - Ian O

90th Oscars. Oscar Contenders of 2017 - For prediction, discussion, entertainment purposes

 discuss on the blog

92 FILMS COMPETED /  9 FINALISTS SELECTED
Last Updated December 25th

Tier 1 - Prediction

This is a tough call since nearly all the films are the kind that have passionate fanbases among those who actually see them and, at least in this category, the votes which determine the 5 nominees from these 9 are by a committee that watches all 9. Anything could happen!

 SWEDEN
The Square

Palme D'Or Cannes, BIFA Nominee, EFA Nominee, NBR Top Five  | Critics Choice Nom | Globe Nom

now playing

Can the Palme d'Or winner continue its success all the way to Oscar night?

CHILE
A Fantastic Woman

Spirit Nom, NBR Top Five  | Critics Choice Nom | Globe Nom

2018 in US

REVIEWED

A hypnotic trans drama from the director of the glorious Gloria (which was inexplicably NOT nominated).

ISRAEL
Foxtrot

NBR Winner

2018 in US

Oscar loves Israeli movies and Lior Ashkenazi is a dependable star

RUSSIA
Loveless

BIFA Nom, EFA Nom, Spirit Nom, NBR Top FiveLAFCA Win | Globe Nom

REVIEWED

2018 in US

Oscar has nominated this director before for the even more challenging Leviathan

LEBANON
The Insult

Was a crowd pleaser at TIFF and respected, too. It will strike people as timely, too.

Tier 2 - The Other Finalists and Possible Spoilers

Highest Profile Entries that did not make the finals

GERMANY
In the Fade

Cannes Best Actress  | Critics Choice Nom | Globe Nom

now playing

Diane Kruger's award winning performance is the main selling point. Will that be selling point enough?

HUNGARY
On Body and Soul

Berlinale Golden Bear | EFA Nominee

REVIEWED

It's unique blend of romantic comedy, discomfiting psychology, and dream sequences is quite memorable.

SOUTH AFRICA
 The Wound

previously played in US

This LGBT film is about male coming of age rituals. It seems quite far off Oscar's wheelhouse but anything could happen with these 9 finalists

SENEGAL
Felicite

previously played in US

Though it won wave reviews it barely registered in US arthouses. Will it have better luck with Oscar voters?

OSCAR IS RESISTANT TO...
Asian cinema. China, Japan, Hong Kong and India, for example, are prolific strong film industries but they are rarely nominated for Foreign Language Oscars though most of the Asian countries submit regularly. Taiwan has the best record among Asian film industries with 3 nominations and a win but every one of those is an Ang Lee picture (!!!). Japan was once popular with Oscar but that had more to do with Akira Kurosawa than with his country's cinema.

Most Noms Without a Win
The countries that have received the most nominations without a win to date are

  1. Israel (10 noms)
  2. Mexico (8 nom)
  3. Belgium (7 noms)
  4. [TIE] Norway and Greece (with 5 each)

Never Nominated
The countries that have submitted the most w/out receiving a single nomination are Portugal (33 times), Egypt and Romania (31), The Philippines and South Korea (28), Bulgaria (27), Venezuela (26), Croatia (25), Serbia, Turkey (23) and Thailand (22 times). Good luck to them all...and quickly!

  18. BELGIUM - 7 noms / 0 wins
  19. AUSTRIA - 4 noms / 2 wins
  20. ALGERIA - 5 noms / 1 win
    Honorable Mention goes to...
    YUGOSLAVIA - 6 noms
Yugoslavia no longer exists but unlike the Former Soviet Union it's nearly impossible to attribute their nominees to any of the current countries since the separations which began in the early 90s were unusually painful / confusing / name-change / war laden - Current countries that were once part of Yugoslavia that now submit are: Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Kosovo, Slovenia, and Montenegro.
