Jose here. Even though Cate Blanchett was in New York City on Sunday for the opening night of The Present, which marks her Broadway debut, the Golden Globes red carpet still found a way to happen (she was still Best Dressed person in the world that night).

No specific trends dominated the evening - other than strangely enough, long sheer sleeves as seen in Nicole’s harlequinesque McQueen gown, and one or two cases of pale dresses washing out the paler skin of their wearer - and everyone did their best to look as glamorous as possible. In fact it was hard to single out complete disasters other than once again, poor Nicole, who gets points for always being adventurous and who I know will make it up to us by looking astonishing at the Oscars, and SJP who also always tries hard to make a statement through fashion.

Now onto the 10 Best Golden Globe Looks

10. Natalie Portman in Prada
When you’re playing one of the world’s most beloved fashion icons, why would you bother paying homage to anyone else? Portman’s nod to Jackie O wasn’t surprising or groundbreaking, but it certainly paid off. The color and retro appliqués are bold and unforgettable, and the fit is rather lovely. Instead of looking like what we think of as maternity fashion, it’s truly a regal look.

9. Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier
Stealing the boho chic thunder from Sienna Miller, Drew Barrymore’s winged gown made me wish I could be her date to all the afterparties. Her relaxed hair and makeup scream “I can do Coachella and the Globes without changing” and for that I applaud her.

8. Hailee Steinfeld in Vera Wang
Somehow Hailee made her sheer sleeves work, and her lavender Vera Wang seems like a fairy tale princess’ dream look come to life. Sexy without being too revealing, the dress announces her as a future couture maven.

7. Emma Stone in Valentino

6. Isabelle Huppert in Armani Privé
Skipping her beloved black tuxes, Golden Globe winner Huppert was a vision of effortless European charm. You could think she just picked this on her way out the door, or that she worked with a team to put the look together for days. The truth is when I saw her look so breathtakingly simple on the red carpet I reacted like she did when she won.

5. Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra
Huppert skipped the tuxes, but Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood decided to show little girls don’t need dresses in a stunning custom design by Altuzarra. One can only wonder how many Kinsey scale numbers shifted after she made her appearance on the red carpet.

4. Brie Larson in Rodarte
*insert tear emoji*
After my complaints about her lackluster hair last season, Brie Larson had me grinning from pure joy by showing up with this delicious Veronica Lake inspired look. The cut and color of the dress are fantastic, but OMG her hair, those waves, that color -- Brava Brie!

3. Naomie Harris in Armani
If Natalie went for Jackie, Naomie was pure Marilyn in this va-va-voom Armani column. Happy birthday Mr. President to all of us!

2. Ruth Negga in Louis Vuitton
As if sent from the future to combat red carpet dullness, the stunning Ruth Negga went with a metallic Louis Vuitton design inspired by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. Kudos for always finding a way to highlight her otherworldly facial features, she never allows what she wears to steal the attention from that face.

1. Blake Lively in Versace
Blake Lively continues to be one of the only celebrities who can make Versace look sexy and elegant at the same time. Her simple black gown makes one think of classic screen sirens like Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner, but the magic is in her choice of accessories, her emerald bracelets, and gold pockets which enliven (no pun intended) what could’ve been a so-so look.
