NATHANIEL R in California, Detroit, Florence Pugh, Zhao Shuzhen, film critics

It's apparently Florence Pugh day with critics though you'll have to read on to know why.

DFCS (Detroit Film Critics Society)
Detroit gave four prizes to Marriage Story but it couldn't crack Picture or Director...

Actress Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
Actor Adam Driver, Marriage Story
Supporting Actress Laura Dern, Marriage Story
Supporting Actor Joe Pesci, The Irishman
Breakthrough Performer Florence Pugh, Little Women / MidSommar / Fighting with My Family
Ensemble Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Screenplay Marriage Story
Use of Music Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Animated Film Toy Story 4
Documentary Apollo 11

SDFCS (San Diego Film Critics Society)

We like the San Diego Film Critics Society because they regularly throw at least one cool curveball. This year that'd be either Zhao Shuzhen for Best Supporting Actress (a category they tend to have good taste in) or Luce for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Film Irishman (runner up: Marriage Story)
Director Safdie Brothers, Uncut Gems (runner up: Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story)
Actress Lupita Nyong'o, Us (runner up: Renee Zellweger, Judy)
Actor TIE Adam Driver, Marriage Story and Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
Supporting Actress Zhao Shuzhen, The Farewell (runner up: Laura Dern, Marriage Story)
Supporting Actor TIE Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Joe Pesci, The Irishman
Comedic Performance: Wesley Snipes, Dolemite is My Name (runner up: Taika Waitti, Jojo Rabbit)
Ensemble: Knives Out (runner up: The Irishman)
Breakthrough Artist: Florence Pugh, Little Women/MidSommar (runner up: Kelvin Harrison Jr, Waves)
Original Screenplay: Marriage Story (runner up: Uncut Gems)
Adapted Screenplay: Luce (runner up: The Irishman)
Costume Design: Dolemite is My Name (runner up: Downton Abbey)
Editing: Ford V Ferrari (runner up: Uncut Gems)
Cinematography: The Lighthouse (runner up: 1917)

Production Design: 1917 (runner up: Little Women)
Visual Effects: Ad Astra (runner up: 1917)
Use of Music: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (runner up: Jojo Rabbit)
Animated Film: I Lost My Body (runner up: Toy Story 4)
Documentary: One Child Nation (runner up: Love, Antosha)
Foreign Language Film: Parasite (runner up: Transit)

Florence Pugh missed the Globe nomination this morning but we think that's just because she's not famous enough for the Globes (yet). Two breakthrough performer prizes today so soon after her Critics Choice nomination are  a nice reminder that people really loved her work this year in both MidSommar and as "Amy" in Little Women. The Oscar nomination may or may not happen... we'll see how the next month of media goes... but she's building momentum for a major Hollywood breakthrough whichever way the Oscar winds blow.
