SPRING BREAKERS
When music is your subject matter you have an advantage here - but what a specific spotlight to shine
Bluegrass heaven. Incredible concert performances and harmonies from the cast
Hugely popular and accessible new showtune score. Too few songs but we'll let it slide
Oscar Isaac's voice is jaw-dropping. The song selection fills it with amazing notes
Every Britney Spears moment is genius. And the soundscape (see sound mixing) also helps

Finalists: Sofia Coppola proves once again with The Bling Ring that her films are aural as well as visual treats, and The Great Beauty's eclectic teetering between choral and europop is often intoxicating
Semi-Finalists: American Hustle has a fun cheeky and campy (champy?) 70s selection and though The Great Gatsby is trying too hard but it has its moments

Original Song

"Do You Want to Build a Snowman"
FROZEN
"Let it Go"
FROZEN

"A Little Party Never Killed Nobody"
THE GREAT GATSBY

"The Moon Song"
HER
"So You Know What It's Like"
SHORT TERM 12

"They say 'have courage' and I'm trying to
I'm right out here for you, just let me in"

Great showtunes have the power of both narrative and characterization

"It’s time to see what I can do, to test the limits and break through"

Anthemic instant classic (with nifty lgbt subtext) even if it shamelessly um borrows from "Defying Gravity". And a huge moment in the film

"right here right now's all we got"

such a specific gift but no filmmaker is as good as Baz at seeling the immediate now of the past

"I'm lying on the moon. My dear I'll be there soon"

The ukulele, the delicate voice, the perfect dreamscape lyrics for a virtual romance

"Bitch, i'm ten - let me go outside and function with friends"

Such a raw angry moment in a character arc, authentic sympathetic and deeply felt rap that the actor  (nominated here) both wrote and performed

Finalists: "Happy" Despicable Me 2
Semi Finalists: "For the First Time in Forever" - Frozen, "My Lord Sunshine" -12 Years a Slave (if only it had been more substantial) and either of the songs from The Butler perhaps
