  PREDICTIONS AS OF JULY 3

Tier 1 - Predictions

Jessie Buckley
1 nomination
HAMNET
(Focus)

Her star has been on the rise and they're already familiar. She's paired with a great director (Chloe Zhao) and it's a potentially meaty role as the grieving wife of Shakespeare

Reinata Reinsve
never nominated
SENTIMENTAL VALUE
(Neon)

She broke out with Worst Person in the World and has been busy ever since. This reunion with Joachim Trier should be her ticket to the big show. Crossing fingers but also believing it is quite likely.

Julia Roberts
4 noms | 1 win
AFTER THE HUNT
(Amazon MGM)

She doesn't need a "comeback" but if this is a riveting drama, it's easy to see the Academy welcoming her back into the spotlight.

Amanda Seyfried
1 nomination
ANN LEE
(Distributor TBA)

Wishful thinking pick - What if she's great in this unusual gamble, playing a religious leader in an original musical. She's really been impressing in the past few years

Emma Mackey
never nominated
ELLA MCKAY
(20th Century)

Wild card risk - she's in three films so maybe she gets the breakout "welcome" nod if she's strong in all of them. James L Brooks hasn't made a film in the past 15 years but if he gets his old magic back, nominations could happen. She's playing an idealistic young politician here.

Tier 2 - Or maybe...

Emma Stone
4 noms* | 2 wins
BUGONIA
(Focus)

It's hard to know what they'll make of this dark comedy but they love Stone and they like Lanthimos (Though she's top-billed perhaps they'll demote her in campaigning?)

Cynthia Erivo
2 noms*
WICKED FOR GOOD
(Universal)

Will they repeat the Wicked acting nods or feel that they've had their due? Oscar has not yet become like the Emmys in terms of actors. We shall see.

Rose Byrne
never nominated
IF I HAD LEGS I'D KICK YOU
(Distributor TBA)

Reviews were great and she's still somehow an underestimated actor. But will it be a year when the acting branch looks beyond best picture heat as they once used to?

Jennifer Lawrence
4 noms | 1 win
DIE MY LOVE
(Distributor TBA)

Though this didn't light Cannes on fire, Lawrence is a huge star and they'll appreciate her stretching. But the movie might not be their cuppa.

Amy Adams
6 noms
AT THE SEA
(Distributor TBA)

We don't know for sure that we'll get the movie this year but Kornél Mundruczó is good with actors in meaty roles - she could shine as a woman just out of rehab.

Tier 3 - Longer Shots? Who the hell knows this early!

Jodie Foster
5 noms | 2 wins
VIE PRIVEE
(Distributor TBA)

Initially we thought a leading role in French by a fine director would be easy awards bait, but response was muted at Cannes. Will it catch on later away from that pressure?

Kate Hudson
1 nomination
SONG SUNG BLUE
(Focus)

She plays one half of a husband and wife Neil Diamond tribute band. Is this a commercial only play or will it be more? Depends on the star chemistry, one supposes, and the director (Hustle & Flow's Craig Brewer)

Olivia Colman
2 noms | 1 win
THE ROSES
(Searchlight)

The War of the Roses didn't do it, Oscar wise, for a sensational Kathleen Turner in 1989 but the Academy likes Colman a lot so she might have better luck with a pitch black divorce comedy.

June Squibb
1 nomination
ELEANOR THE GREAT
(SPC)

Reviews didn't suggest much from Cannes but small charmers aren't really going to ever get attention in that tense big stakes auteur festival. It's exciting to see Squibb have a SECOND leading role so soon after the first (Thelma)

Dakota Johnson
never nominated
MATERIALISTS
(A24)

Johnson once again showed her film-carrying finesse with this romantic drama that proved an unexpected success. Will its fanbase grow over the next six months or will the movie fade?
