WHAT WILL WIN? |
With two musical scores nominated (neither of which should have been eligible under Oscar rules which are supposed to prevent films with substantial song scores from making the list), it's hard to say. My suspicion is that if something can beat the musicals, we get a semi-surprising win for The Wild Robot. |
WHAT SHOULD WIN? NATHANIEL'S PICK |
Of this quintet (not remotely my list!) my vote easily goes to The Brutalist.
ORIGINAL SONG |
"Never Too Late" |
"Mi Camino" (Clément Ducol and Camille) EMILIA PEREZ |
"El Mal" |
"Like a Bird" |
"The Journey" (Diane Warren) THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT |

WHAT WAS LEFT OUT? |

Ugh this branch. They are so shameless, regularly ignoring strong contenders for their friends. But the perpetual griping aside, the finalists that didn't make it that seemed to have some heat were "Kiss the Sky" from The Wild Robot, "Sick in the Head" from Kneecap, "Winter Coat" from Blitz, "Compress/Repress" from Challengers, and "Beyond" from Moana 2. Other finalists from the bakeoffs were "piece by Piece" Piece by Piece"Forbidden Road" Better Man, "Harper and Will Go West" Will & Harper, "Out of Oklahoma" Twisters, and "Tell Me It's You" Mufasa: The Lion King |
WHAT WILL WIN? |
It's surely going to be "El Mal" which is the most memorable musical number in Emilia Perez.
WHAT SHOULD WIN? NATHANIEL'S PICK |
As usual I hate Oscar's choices in this category, so I'd also vote for "El Mal" because it's actually a memorable musical number in the film.

A COMPLETE UNKNOWN | DUNE PART TWO | EMILIA PEREZ | WICKED | THE WILD ROBOT |

WHAT WAS LEFT OUT? |

Other films that felt like they might land here were Conclave, Alien Romulus, and as a longshot maybe Blitz or The Substance.
WHAT WILL WIN? |
My suspicion is that Wicked takes this but it's no lock.
WHAT SHOULD WIN? NATHANIEL'S PICK |
Hmmmm. I'm torn between Wicked and A Complete Unknown
