AND THE NOMINEES ARE...

(SCROLL DOWN FOR ADDITIONAL SOUND CATEGORIES)

Original Score

1917
Thomas Newman
(15th nom)
Dec 20th

He's the most overdue composer working and he has a rousing score for this well regarded picture. He might finally win it!

Joker

Hildur Gudnadottir
(1st nom!)
Nov 15th

WINNER

She's worked on tracks for great sounding movies like Sicario and Arrival but now she's scoring a billion dollar movie. It could happen.

Little Women

Alexandre Desplat
(11th noms, 2 wins)
Dec 25th

The new John Williams? Usually nominated and he works a lot.

Marriage Story
Randy Newman

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker
John Williams
(52nd nom, 5 wins)
Dec 20th

They've only extremely rarely ignored Williams... but a lot of people don't really like this installment. Could he be a surprise miss?

Randy Newman (double nominated this year - 22 noms & 2 wins total)

Trivia for these composers
Erivo becomes the third person in history to be simultaneously nominated for acting and songwriting after Mary J Blige and Lady Gaga. The only person to have won both categories is Barbra Streisand though (in different years).  Though Elton & Bernie have been composing together since the beginning of Elton's career, Elton's other Oscar nominated songs were co-written by Tim Rice.   13 of Newman's 22 nominations are in the Song category. The others are in score. Both of his wins are from the song category as well rather than score.

Who got stiffed?
It's absolutely unconscionable that they skipped "Glasgow" from Wild Rose, which should have won the whole category. The nine other finalists that didn't manage a nomination were "Spirit" and "Never Too Late" from The Lion King, "High Above the Water" from Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, "Speechless: fron Aladdin, "Catchy Song" from The Lego Movie Part 2, "Letter to My Godfather" from The Black Godfather, "Soju One Glass" from Parasite, "Daily Battles" from Motherless Brooklyn, "Da Bronx" from The Bronx USA,

The sound guild nominations suggest that Rocketman, Toy Story 4, The Irishman, and Apollo 11 might have also had reason to hope they could be nominated.
