Globe Nomination Announcement

The Globe Nominations were announced bright and early... I followed on CNN the only live stream that seemed to be working. They began with the credits for their 70th anniversary and a weird applause break (without initial applause) for Cecil B DeMille Tribute winner Jodie Foster. After that the first Mr Golden Globe was revealed (Sam Fox, son of the Michael J Foxes) along with our usual Miss Golden Globe (this time that's Francesca Eastwood, daughter of Clint & Francesca)

Megan Fox started us the announcements but Jessica Alba also joined in.

BEST SONG
For You -Act of Valor (Keith Urban)
Not Running Anymore - Stand Up Guys (Jon Bon Jovi)
Safe and Sound - The Hunger Games (Taylor Swift) *not eligible for Oscar consideration*
Skyfall - Skyfall (Adele)
Suddenly -Les Misérables (performed by Hugh Jackman)

Best Song is a tough category to predict for Oscar but Globes always go for the stars so they obviously want Adele, Taylor Swift and the rest to attend. They're tripling down to make sure Nicole Kidman and her man are there with 2 nominations for Nicki and one for Keith.

BEST SCORE
Life of Pi
Argo
Anna Karenina
Cloud Atlas
Lincoln

Mychael Danna has never had any luck with Oscar but will Life of Pi change that? The music is pretty noticeable and that usually helps. I've noticed a lot of online fandom for the Cloud Atlas score. Is that merely a case of the score being such a central part of the plot and the main theme being repeated like crazy? And is it just me or is Alexandre Desplat's score for Argo actually the weakest of his 18 scores this year? I'd much prefer to have seen him nominated for Moonrise Kingdom , Zero Dark Thirty or Rust & Bone or one of the 13 others. Of this batch of nominees, I think it's safe to say that I'm all about Anna Karenina

SCREENPLAY
Zero Dark Thirty
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Django Unchained
Argo

The Globes don't differentiate between adapted and original and so their nominee list usually swings prestige which means adapted (for reasons I've never quite fathomed because original screenplays are where it's at baby, year in and year out... well maybe not this year but whatever). Only DJANGO from their nominee pool here is the usual type of original, while Zero Dark Thirty (which feels like an adapted because of the true story and research factor) can also qualify.

FOREIGN FILM
Amour - Austria
A Royal Affair - Denmark
Intouchables - France
Kon Tiki - Norway
Rust & Bone - France *not eligible for Oscar consideration in their correlative category*

Three French language films and two Scandinavian films for the Globes this year. They kept it regional.

ANIMATED FILM
Brave
Frankenweenie
Hotel Transylvania
Rise of Guardians
Wreck-It Ralph

LOTS MORE AFTER THE JUMP

Utter rubbish, since snubbee ParaNorman is easily superior to 60% of this list. The smaller films just aren't catching for awards groups this year which is a shame since GKids has been working their asses off to diversify the animated medium for audiences.

Do you think the Hotel Transylvania nomination is just an excuse to get Adam Sandler to their show?

LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Jack Black, Bernie
Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook
Hugh Jackman, Les Misérables
Ewan McGregor, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
Bill Murray, Hyde Park on Hudson

Cooper & Jackman may well be competing for the fifth Oscar slot since the Academy usually takes 4 from drama and 1 from here. It shouldn't surprise me but the nominee that does is actually not McGregor but Murray who I keep forgetting about since Hyde Park on Hudson has been lambasted by critics and isn't passing the test with audiences either.

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Emily Blunt, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
Judi Dench, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
Maggie Smith, Quartet
Meryl Streep, Hope Springs

Dame Maggie is ready for your applause

I am quite unhappy to report that there isn't anything remotely award worthy to Quartet, including our dear Maggie Smith who is wasted in a bland film which can't ever muster much in the way of drama or comedy or suspense or tears or anything really... just a lot of sitting around waiting for backstory to emerge.

It's a shame that the Globes annually ignore actual comedies in this category. This might have been a nice place to throw a bone to Leslie Mann (This is 40) or especially Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect... which also fits the musical bill) if they wanted a younger star present. I wonder if Streep will show? She's generally a good sport about these things and shows to everything but she's definitely lying low post Oscar win -- no campaign for Hope Springs -- so maybe she'll skip?

Joe warned us on the podcast that Emily Blunt was beloved by the Globes like few stars have ever been beloved. So this shouldn't surprise us as much as it does.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Alan Arkin, Argo
Leonardo DicCaprio, Django Unchained
Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Master
Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln
Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained

Once again we see Matthew McConaughey snubbed despite giving one of the year's best and most talked about performances. Weirder still he's definitely a Globe-friendly type star. I didn't want to be right, movie gods, I didn't want to be right! Awards bodies just have such problems with eroticized men (see also Michael Fassbender last year getting the big Oscar snub for Shame)

I'm not entirely sure that these high profile nods for Django Unchained will help it since it doesn't narrow the focus much by including both Leo & Christoph.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Amy Adams, The Master
Sally Field, Lincoln
Anne Hathaway, Les Misérables
Helen Hunt, The Sessions
Nicole Kidman, The Paperboy

Identical to the SAG list but for Adams in place of Maggie Smith in "Best Exotic" which is a bit strange when you realize that Best Exotic made their Best Picture list. Still... the Globes were far more responsive to The Master than SAG was and it is a Weinstein effort and Weinstein & Globes are generally happy bedfellows.

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA
Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
Marion Cotillard, Rust & Bone
Helen Mirren, Hitchcock
Naomi Watts, The Impossible
Rachel Weisz , The Deep Blue Sea

will she or won't she?

Another nod for Rachel Weisz in what is an increasingly competitive Best Actress year. And yet year after year no one will listen to me when I say "BUT IT'S NOT A WEAK YEAR FOR BEST ACTRESS. YOU SAY THIS EVERY YEAR!"

The two high profile snubs here are Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts) and Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) both are which had a disadvantage with the Globe preference for household name stars. A lot of people are thrown by the Riva snub but the Globes are probably the last place they should have ever expected to see her nominated.

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA
Daniel Day Lewis, Lincoln
Richard Gere, Arbitrage
John Hawkes, The Sessions
Joaquin Phoenix, The Master
Denzel Washington, Flight

The Globes extend another mash note to Richard Gere who has come up short despite a few solitary voices crying for traction. Lewis, Washington & Hawkes are all locked up now in Best Actor.

BEST DIRECTOR
Ben Affleck, Argo
Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
Ang Lee, Life of Pi
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln
Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained

Tarantino is the only "new" name in terms of awards traction. But can he make it to Oscar. Django seems like it might be more Globe friendly than Oscar friendly. I've been predicting Michael Haneke for a Best Director nomination for months and months now. Should I start losing confidence in my somewhat ballsy prediction?

Les Miz won 4 key nominations but response from the Musical Friendly Globes couldn't been much stronger. What's going on?

Here we see the age old "musicals direct themselves!" thing though affecting Les Miz. And don't say it was a judgment call (even if you think it was a good judgment) since Globes are hardly the most discerning precursor in this category.

MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
Argo
Django Unchained
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Zero Dark Thirty

Nothing too unexpected here though this is frankly terrible news for The Master considering how much they did like it overall. I'd say it's hopes for a Best Picture nomination are done. The passion for #1 placements on Oscar ballots probably just isn't there in a year with this many well received dramas from major auteurs.

MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY or MUSICAL
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Les Misérables
Moonrise Kingdom
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
Silver Linings Playbook

Salmon Fishing is the sole surprise here and probably came at the expense of Bernie, which has been doing pretty well this season. But newsflash: The Globes REALLY didn't like This is 40. I also believed Ted might have a shot here given its blockbuster status. But I guess there were enough  Oscar friendly choices to fill this one up.

What's your takeaway this morning?

Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Claire Danes, Ed Harris and Jeff Daniels! It's "The Hours" cast reunion!

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPatrick

These nominations are KILLING me. No Parks And Rec! No Beasts! No Rashida Jones! No Riva! No Keira! Maggie Smith in every category! Helen Mirren solidifying her default nomination!

Sigh. Majorly disappointed. Maybe the BAFTAs will be fun?

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTB

YAY NICOLE AND RACHEL!!! That almost makes me happy enough to not be pissed about ParaNorman.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSad man

TB -- omg. never rests your hopes on the BAFTAS. (They are THE WORST)

But the Globes often do nominate the directors of musicals, even Tim Burton for Sweeney and Parker for Evita, not to mention Marshall, Luhrmann, even Attenborough for A Chorus Line of all things. They also vote for musicals as their Best Pictures almost any time they have a legit opportunity, so II don't think we can call Hooper's miss simple generic bias. They either apparently don't like him (as, apparently, a lot of people don't) or his work on the film, or they did like it but just liked five other very strong directorial statements better.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNick Davis

Leaning prestige means leaning adapted: Of course. The upper crust of any medium respects the achievements of the next less visceral medium, which, for people working in film, is books and comics. It's also why video game designers want to be like filmmakers.
Globes not liking comedies: They want to nominate most of the people they think are in the top ten at the moment of their nominations. I don't think Mirren's actually getting the nom, though.

New "at the moment" positions:

1. Chastain
2. Riva (yes, even with this Globe miss, she's still a highly likely nominee due to how all the OTHER precursors are reacting to her)
3. Lawrence
4. Weisz (With this globe nod and the NBR win, I'm guessing she's actually secured a slot.)
5. Watts
6. Mann (even with misses at this and the SAG's, a strong B/O COULD quickly push up her position, showing why announcing these nominations so early is dumb. At the very least, it might build career momentum for her next strong role.)
7. Cotillard (Two foreign language noms sounds very unlikely to me, and precursors are leaning on Riva, HARD, but this nod means it's closer to the realm of possibility than it was two days ago.)
8. Mirren (competition is too much for a film perceived as this light and throwaway.)
9. Meryl Streep. (Like I said before, it's unlikely she's been out of their top ten too often.)
10. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (There might be some hope if they start playing up the Days of Wine and Roses parallels, but not even getting a Globe nod with their...loose...standards of what "comedy" means, is a strong setback.)
Three way toss up for slot 11:
Wallis (YOUNG), Knightley (Lack of precursor attention and, as I've said, I don't think The Academy has a taste for swirly, twirly, impenetrable Tolstoy) and Dench (Don't see something like Best Exotic really getting as many #1s as Smashed.)

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

@Nathaniel as bleak as your comment was, I laughed. So true.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTB

@Volvagia

All the OTHER? You mean critics? She wasn't nominated by the SAG either either. Now tell me about an uphill battle, being an unknown and getting nominated for an Oscar without SAG and GG in a foreign language performance (against another foreign language performance given by a former winner that is working very hard for this nomination while you are not).

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

@Volvagia: You lost all credibility when you put Leslie Mann at #6 and Helen Mirren at #8.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJ.P.

And Leslie Mann?

BFCA? No
SAG? No
GG? No
Any critics? No
Runner-ups? No

COME. ON.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

@Volvagia

And get your facts straight. Weisz didn't win the NBR. Chastain did. Weisz won NYFCC.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

cal: Yeah. The Globe's are notorious star bleepers, so OF COURSE they're going to lean on Cotillard and you can't say that critics groups have no effects on the Oscar climate.
J.P.: I stand by it. If, say, This is Forty tanks at the box office, I'd eat my words and pull Leslie Mann down to 8 or 9 and push Cotillard, Mirren and, maybe, Streep up, but comedies are, frankly, made and broken by AUDIENCE REACTION, especially box office. If the box office is great enough, however, I might provisionally put her up a position, because Oscar doesn't live in a hermetically sealed bubble from the average population.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Volvagia, please tell me the last actor who got nominated without critics, BFCA, Golden Globes and SAG and for a comedy, based only on box-office results. You're in denial, sorry.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor both nominated!!! Good stuff.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I'm holding out hope that number one votes shake up the Oscar ballot. I mean who the f--- is going to put Helen Mirren at number one? Riva, Weisz, Cotillard, Watts, and Wallis on the other hand....this Best Actress category is going to be a bloodbath. Only Chastain and Lawrence are safe.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTB

Excluding the four locks and semi locks, we have:

Mirren: SAG / Golden Globes
Weisz: NYFCC / Golden Globes
Riva: BFCA / LA, NYFCO, Boston
Wallis: BFCA

It's one of them for the fifth slot, unless they snub Watts (it wouldn't surprise me).

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Volvagia, Please, even it sound too naive even for yourself. Maybe Riva will be nominated, but sorry, 1. Cotillard is very likely, and 2. Leslie Mann is kaputt and 3. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is no one in this race. It sounds more an hypothetic situation no according to the state of he race... But again, fine. BTW: The AMPAS also hates Apatow, just because McCarthy got the nom, doesn't mean it will repeat, especially with the mixed reviews This is 40 is receiving

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterleon

GET THOSE NOMINATIONS, NICOLE! I'm happy just because she's there. I just need her to take a picture with Ewan since he'll be there too. But this will be just another trip like Rabbit Hole won't it? At least she's racking up the noms...

and is it me or will this be the starriest (not a word, but you know what i mean) ceremony in some time?

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDerreck

Volvagia: Your analysis is bull. Bubble or no, Oscar has a bias against comedies (not to mention broad comedies like Apatow's), and ESPECIALLY in lead role nominations. There's already going to be one this year—Jennifer Lawrence for SLP—and you can be damn sure there won't be two. What are you basing your analysis on, Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids? That's Supporting. Quirky comic roles are okay for supporting.

But then you also think Mary Elizabeth Winstead has a better shot for her absolutely-no-traction movie than Judi Dench AND Q. Wallis have for their Best Picture nominee contenders. "Don't see something like Best Exotic really getting as many #1s as Smashed"? I swear you're high.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJ.P.

so does this mean Nicole Kidman will be nominated for THE PAPERBOY? SAG and the Golden Globes sure did respond well to her! What a great surprise and perfect early Christmas present!

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkent

Leslie Mann for THIS IS FORTY? LMFAO!!! The only remotely possible place she could've scored a nomination this season was at the Globes, and they obviously passed on her. There is no feasible way she is more likely than Cotillard or the three Dames (Smith, Mirren, Dench--who have a combined Oscar total of 14235632 nominations amongst them).

And in what universe is Riva more likely than Jennifer Lawrence, who I think is still (just barely) out in front over Chastain? Emmanuelle Riva can still be nominated, but it's going to be a tough sell. BAFTA recognition is MANDATORY. Michael Haneke is not everyone's cup of tea--and if last year is any indication, with the snubs of Shame, Young Adult, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Drive, etc.,--the Academy is frankly not that fond of dark, adult, auteurist material.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

The BAFTAS do indeed suck, they always get it slightly wrong first with the long list and then with the weird nominations at times (I am guessing Bardem and Dench will definitely get in for Skyfall there) and the telecast is on delay and they edit out the best parts and the long speeches and you just want to give up on LIFE after they are over.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrami (ramification)

well SAG has an pretty good track record w Oscars for the last few years:
2008: 17/20
2009: 19/20 (!)
2010: 17/20
2011: 17/20
(gone are the crazy days (94-96 & 2001, 2003) with up to ten contenders in each acting category :/)

SO I think well have most of our nominees locked down by looking at the SAG-charts. BUT who (its almost always one) is gonna be this years: Mila Kunis, Evan Rachel Wood, Tilda Swinton, Maria Bello and/ or Hayden Christensen (people w both GG and SAG noms who dont get Oscar)? Cooper? Kidman? Cotillard?

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTobias (a swede)

SARAH PAULSON nominated!!! YES! Not for AHS but still a nominee!

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJim

@3rtful I weep with you about The Master.

@TB...and Parks and Recreation. I literally don't understand why there is seemingly no love for this show, anywhere.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJesse

The Globes on the other hand doesnt have o good track record w Oscars the last few years missing:
6, 2008
only 2, 2009 (but there wasnt much competition that year)
5, 2010
and 5 last year.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTobias (a swede)

cal: Um, okay. Yes, Mann has no precursors. Yes, I forgot which exact blurring together critics group Weisz actually got. Sorry. Yes, Mann hasn't had runner-ups. Yes, it leans comedic. Yes, she doesn't even have the Globe comedy nod. With all of that, you'd think I'd not even dare consider her within the top 10. However, we have to consider the KIND of movie it is (low-key movie focused on marital strain) and the release date (Christmas) as well. If there's not an early year success story, the Globes will typically fill the comedy category with 1. Who they THINK Oscar will vote for, 2. Pure starbleeping or 3. Personal pets. The first is how Maggie Smith, Dench and Streep got in this year. The second is why Jolie and Hathaway got in last year. The third is why Blunt got in this year. I'm still guessing Mann's the silent sixth, sorry. I know that sounds delusional, and it currently is, right now, but here's hoping an upcoming critics prize helps out on that front, because they haven't all been announced yet.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

I just read the current EW Entertainers of The Year. And pretty much every actor they asked what their favourite movie or performance was - Wallis kept being mentioned. So much so - I thought - geez people print another comment from somebody else that's different. Is she really out at Oscar? And Riva too? Those were my two favourite lead actress performances this year! (Lawrence is supporting in my books).

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoseph

In my not so humble opinion the facts say this for Best Actress as of now,

Based on the awards that matter and the hype that matters:

1. Jessica Chastain: Golden Globes + SAG + BFCA + NBR Best Actress Win
2. Jennifer Lawrence: Golden Globes + SAG + BFCA + LAFCA Best Actress Win (tie)
3. Naomi Watts: Golden Globes + SAG + BFCA
4. Marion Cotillard: Golden Globes + SAG + BFCA
5. Helen Mirren: Golden Globes + SAG
6. Rachel Weisz: Golden Globes + NYFCC Best Actress Win
7. Emmanuelle Riva: BFCA + LAFCA Best Actress Win (tie)
8. Maggie Smith: Golden Globes (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel + Downton Abbey wave)
9. Judi Dench: Golden Globes (Skyfall wave)
10. Meryl Streep: Golden Globes (+ she's Meryl Streep)

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Wow. Every acting category still has competition going on; this is crazy. Fun to watch, but nerve wrecking.

I sincerely hope Mirren does not get the Oscar nod and it goes to either Weisz, Riva, or Wallis. I'd be happy with two of them getting in if they decide to snub Watts, which I could see. Cotillard is still a bit shaky, but as time goes on she seems more and more likely.

Nicole Kidman really shocked me. I guess she really does have hope on the morning of Oscar noms, which does make me happy for her, but I was hoping for Kerry Washington considering the Django love.

Actor should be interesting as well, as Jackman, Cooper, and Pheonix are battling it out for the last two positions. It could really go either way. I feel like maybe it's leaning towards Jackman and Cooper? Since Jackman has so much good will and has never been nominated and Cooper gives a great performance in a BP and Pheonix missed out on SAG, support for The Master seems to be dwindling, and he made those anti-Oscar remarks earlier on. Guess we'll see...

Supporting actor is still a hot ass mess that I'd prefer to just pretend doesn't exist.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

Jesse - I love Parks and Rec. And can't wait for Poehler and Fey as hosts at GGs.
Patrick - LOVE The Hours reunion!

Think this may be Jessica Chastain's year for noms in all awards. She may also be in line for a Tony, though the critics haven't loved The Heiress.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPam

@Volvagia

sorry to say this but the Leslie Mann thing will never happen.
AMPAS is very limited when it comes to major upsets (actors without GG or SAG attention) in the acting nominations - usually one per year (tops). And when it does happen its only from a film they are watching anyway (for other categories - and dramas):
2008: Michael Shannon - Revolutionary Road
2009: Maggie Gyllenhaal - Crazy Heart
2010: Javier Bardem - Bitiful
2011: Max Von Sydow - Extremely Loud...

PARANORMAN. :(

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Great for the Salmon Fishing nominations! Once you past the title and the initial premise, it was a really solid film which had its major strength in the leading couple who did a very good job. So good for them for actually recognizing quality in some unexpected choices.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteriggy

i'm still so freaked out that Marion Cotillard looks to be happening. it is such a weird movie (not that i didn't like it) and it's not even really focused on her.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternathanielr

How come Anjelica Huston appears unnominatable for Smash from an easy lay like the Golden Globes? The woman has 8 career nods from them -- making her tied with Katharine Hepburn but unlike Hepburn she actually won 1. I get SAG and the Emmy's not going for it but the Globes like shinny veteran names.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

Just for posterity, the article says that Marion Cotillard is up for DEEP BLUE SEA. Hmm, I wonder if that means that people are focusing on her, and not on her movie? ;-)

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDave in Alamitos Beach

DAVE - thanks for the catch. lol. this is merely a result of trying to type as fast as Megan Fox talked but it might also be a freudian slip indicating just what you're saying.

3RTFUL -- i assume it's that Smash got suhc a bad rep so quickly so people felt embarrassed for loving it. People are always trying to make people embarrassed for embracing musicals in any way.

December 13, 2012 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Another nomination for Nicole Kidman!!!! yay!!!!

I have read one or two reactions from critics saying her publicist have been doing their jobs hence getting her the SAG and GG noms. But truly, apart from the interviews she did with Award Daily, Hitfix, David Poland, Roger Friedman and Daily Beast, Kidman has had very little exposure compared to the other BSA nominees, I mean, not everyone has read those interviews. Even her FYC ad is pathetic-looking, no effort made on it at all. There is a reason why Nathaniel, Amy Nicholson have written pieces about award bodies ignoring her performance.

Critics and others are calling it popularity nominations but I disagree especially where SAG is concerned, this is only her 3rd individual nomination. Yes, we know the GGs love their stars but even so, it is a well deserved nomination. Critics are throwing their toys out of their prams because SAG (actors) have ignored some of their choices and nominated performances they, as actors, love. Good on SAG and GGs.
The same critics who have ignored her this year will be citing her performance as fearless, brave, brilliant in a few years when interviewing or writing about her just as they are now doing with Dogville and Birth despite ignoring those performances while giving the awards out.

Ride on Nicole! Even if she does not get an Oscar nomination - the SAG and GG noms are just tops!

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Nathaniel, I'd like to hear your thoughts on Cotillard. You said you loved the performance but you seem to be rooting against her!

Hopefully the Oscars get it right. Keep "Brave, Frankenweenie and Wreck-It Ralph" for Best Animated Feature and replace "Hotel Transylvania" and "Rise of Guardians" with "ParaNorman" and "Pirates! Band of Misfits" instead.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P.

You're freaking out with the possibility. You're saying this is unlikely in every post in a year full of unlikely contenders. I this is a very atypical race. Don't be that surprised she is getting traction.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

No Keira, in a category that clearly had room for her. I think any chance she had at a nom is gone.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

My point: if everybody is unlikely/unusual, the bigger mega star gets the nomination. Because it is not really about te performance, is it?

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Don't worry about Miss Cotillard, she is a lock. The only actresses working this year's campaign trail with anything near her ferocity and skill are Kidman and Wallis.
