SAG Winners Win Again

A quick break from festival screenings to shove food in my face (tortilla chips, peppermint patty, a tangerine. Healthy!) and watch a few minutes of the SAG Awards. But I won't be able to do the whole thing as I'll be racing back to hopefully get into a new Mark Ruffalo movie with the unwieldy title of Infinite Polar Bear. Why must everything happen within the same two weeks? Since I didn't get to watch, not really, I trust you'll share your favorite moments in the comments so I can seek them out on YouTube later (like the non-movie obsessed civilians who see everything they're curious about that way. Such a strange lifestyle!)

It may seem morbid to say but I enjoy SAG's "in memoriam" section so much more than Oscars. Perhaps it's their limited focus on actors but it gives them a chance to show a million clips instead of just quick flashes without much in the way of dialogue

I'm always hoping that the Oscar acting races will be real competitions but most years this ends up happening with all the big shows in regimented lock-step for all four categories with maybe ONE errant choice by one show. It's such a drama killer... and these people are in the business of making drama for us to enjoy. Why does this happen, this winner-takes-all effect? Theories. Got any?

DJDeeJay- I am with you on Bradley Cooper. I also think the same thing could happen in supporting actress. If Lupita and Jennifer split- maybe June Squibb wins? If they want to honor Nebraska, this may be the only chance to do it.

i think it could be cooper, leto is not in baftas line up.

Tom - " If Lupita and Jennifer split..." man, that better not happen. Anyone other than Nyong'o is wrong, but Squibb especially. She was fine, good even, but I don't get how she ends up being one of the top 5 best of the year. If it's not Nyong'o, the only other good option is Sally Hawkins.

I'm not really rooting for Squibb, but I recognize that many people are. Cate is getting all the Blue Jasmine love and no one really seems to care about August, so I think June is 3rd place. But I want to see Lupita win- if nothing else than to see her sure to be the best of the night speech.

I'm fearing (yes, fearing) that Cooper could be the shocker of the evening....I know that Leto's perf has been widely appreciated, it scored almost all precursor awards and it surprised many people. Besides DBC is a film appreciated (and I'm particularly glad for this, since it could encourage many producers to choice this kind of project more often)...so everything seems DONE. but I'm afraid that Leto is not as well appreciated as his perf...and since AH is quite popular too (even too much IMHO) I wouldn't want that Cooper (who seems a nice guy and who he's definitely a very on demand actor) could take advantage from this. I also think Cooper is a good actor, but I really hope Academy will wait a little bit before to select him...just because I think that his role/perf in AH is quite unbearable...even if Bafta and Oscar nominations clearly shew that a lot of people is OK with it.
But I'm sure he could be nominate again, even soon (AMERICAN SNIPER...CAMERON CROWE'S PROJECT...and why not SERENA?)...SO, PLEASE, PLEASE...NOT THIS TIME!

i find it hard not to be blown away by McConaughey's performance. He presents every emotional range in DBC and its played with such confidence too. I think he is incredibly worthy of the award. i love how the movie doesn't show much of Woodroof's pre diagnosis character, but we don't need too because we get everything we need from McConaughey's performance. Hope he gets the gold.

I am so disheartened that buzz seems to be fading for Dern. My choice for Best Actor is either Bruce or Chiwetel. I really want a damn tie...can't I have this, please?!

January 20, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Brookesboy - that's the tie that I want, too. I loved those performances SO much, I wouldn't even know how to choose between them.

Frontrunners are frontrunners for a reason. It's not always voter laziness when group after group after group reach the same conclusion. They're not here to entertain YOU with unique winners at every turn just so you'll be surprised and interested. Go watch a football game for that instead. It's fine to have your favorites and want to root for distinctive winners, but the constant whining about groupthink every year becomes tiring. Sometimes conclusions are reached, and that's that. Helen Mirren. Jamie Foxx, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Heath Ledger, J-Hud, Mo'Nique, Octavia Spencer, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, and on and on. Don't hate tha playa, hate tha game.

January 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDobson

I wonder who Mia is voting for.

January 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

Dobson -- nobody hear hates the playa, they hate the game. which is what you're asking us to do so i don't understand. My point is not that conclusions aren't made. My point is to questino this exact thing you're pointing out "FRONTRUNNERS ARE FRONTRUNNERS FOR A REASON"... i find the "reason" part questionable is the point. Yes, Cate Blanchett is the frontrunner for a reason. But that type of mammoth performance does not happen 4 times a year one for each category so why do these things become so set in stone. Jared Leto and Mathew McConaughey for example are not appreciably better than their competition and MANY people (anecdotal evidence) have other favorites... so how are they as locky lock lock as Cate Blanchett (who i have yet to meet anyone who doesn't think that's a great performance. it might not be everyone's favorite but i've not met anyone who didn't think it was great.) ? that's the point of questioning it.

because this happens every year and it doesn't make any kind of sense with different voting bodies of different sizes and different membership criteria
