Golden Globe Nominations!
by Nathaniel R
Hollywood was up bright and early today for the Golden Globe Nominations. How cute are Dakota Fanning's glasses? As per usual they began with randomness (Best Song, Best Screenplay, some TV categories) before saving some biggies until the Today Show at 8:15 AM. We'll have much more coverage later but for now just a few quick notes since it's an information avalanche.
FILM
Drama
- 1917
- The Irishman
- Joker
- Marriage Story
- The Two Popes
Netflix really campaigned with the HFPA as you can see hogging 60% of Best Drama. This is a tough break for Ford V Ferrari and Little Women which both seemed like Globes-ready movies...
Musical or Comedy
- Dolemite is My Name
- Jojo Rabbit
- Knives Out
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
- Rocketman
This is the first time in recent memory where they've skipped the loudest musical (Cats!) in the Musical category. Perhaps their private screening didn't go well.
Actress, Drama
- Cynthia Erivo, Harriet
- Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
- Saoirse Ronan, Little Women
- Charlize Theron, Bombshell
- Renée Zellweger, Judy
Shockingly normcore. Usually they have one surprise.
Actress, Musical or Comedy
- Awkwafina, The Farewell
- Blanchett, Where'd You Go Bernadette?
- de Armas, Knives Out
- Feldstein, Booksmart
- Thompson, Late Night
It's just one man's opinion but I actually thought Dever was stronger than Feldstein in Booksmart. Nevertheless they're a duo so happy for Booksmart for this attention. Awkafina's to lose obviously, right?
Actor, Drama
- Bale, Ford V Ferrari
- Banderas, Pain & Glory
- Driver, Marriage Story
- Phoenix, Joker
- Pryce, The Two Popes
No De Niro is the biggest curveball that the Globes threw this morning but the Best Actor category IS a bloodbath this year with so many viable big star contenders.
Actor, Musical or Comedy
- Craig, Knives Out
- Davis, Jojo Rabbit
- DiCaprio, Once UPon a Time
- Egerton, Rocketman
- Murphy, Dolemite is My Name
The widely expected list.
Supporting Actor
- Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day
- Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes
- Al Pacino, The Irishman
- Joe Pesci, The Irishman
- Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time
Two-thirds leads but what can you do? Lotta starpower there.
Supporting Actress
- Annette Bening, The Report
- Margot Robbie, Bombshell
- Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers
- Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell
- Laura Dern Marriage Story
One of the very few surprises this morning: Annette Bening! She's really terrific in the movie but The Report's profile had shrunk so much. Bates and Bening both weren't nominated at the Critics Choice this weekend so perhaps there's some wiggle room for candidates this year and Oscar might surprise?
Director
- Bong Joon Ho, Parasite
- Sam Mendes, 1917
- Todd Philips, Joker
- Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
- Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time
Though we didn't predict him we did have expect that Philips would show up here. SHOCKING though that the Globes didn't opt for pitting happily coupled Baumbach (Marriage Story) & Gerwig (Little Women) against each other since they love the celebrity drama
Screenplay
- The Irishman
- Marriage Story
- Parasite
- The Two Popes
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Four campaigning as original with Oscars, plus The Irishman
Foreign Film
- The Farewell (US)
- Les Miserables (France)
- Pain and Glory (Spain)
- Parasite (South Korea)
- Portrait of a Lady on Fire (France)
Very high profile category this year. The msot the Globes ever match the Oscars in this category is 3/5 but it's usually closer to 2/5... Only 3 of these are eligible for the Oscars in the same category though (Les Mis, Pain, Parasite)
Score
- 1917
- Little Women
- Motherless Brooklyn
- Joker
- Marriage Story
Wish we'd spoken it loudly so as to be prophetic but we half expected that if Motherless Brooklyn showed up anywhere this season it would be in Best Score since it's so jazz-obsessed.
Songs
- "Beautiful Ghosts" - Cats
- "I'm Gonna Love Me Again" - Rocketman
- "Into the Unknown" - Frozen
- "Spirit" - The Lion King
- "Stand Up" - Harriet
Just as suspected. It all songs that will bring bonafide superstars into the live broadcast (even though they don't perform) plus a song from Frozen 2.
Animated Feature
- Frozen 2
- How to Train Your Dragon 3
- The Lion King
- Missing Link
- Toy Story 4
They went all blockbuster sequels/remakes plus Missing Link. No sense of adventure, HFPA. Come on!

Even Burlesque managed to get a best pic nomination. Cats must be really terrible.
Nice to see Taron Egerton and Paul Rudd (can you believe?!) get their first Golden Globe nominations, plus while they’re in different categories, both of the BOOKSMART girls got nominated! Love that they remembered MISSING LINK and also Annette Bening (gotta push myself to watch that now that it’s on Amazon Prime), even though I’m sad they couldn’t fit in Julianne Moore for GLORIA BELL in the Comedy/Musical category. Then again, if she was in contention in the Drama category, then I could see how she had no shot.
As ever, a mixed bag of nominations. Def happy for Annette Bening, she was great in The Report. Though I often have Streep fatigue, she was a highlight of the 2nd season of BLL and deserves recognition. Looks like I might to see Knives Out after all!
WHERE'S ZENDAYA??????
Peggy Sue I know you’re frustrated, I can relate, but that /3rtful comment you clearly made was petty. We’re better than that. Thelma and Louise like you said remember?
Sorry for the double post but I am STEAMING.
Drama Series, Actress
Jennifer Aniston, The Morning Show
Reese Witherspoon, The Morning Show
Olivia Colman, The Crown
Jodie Comer, Killing Eve
Nicole Kidman, Big Little Lies
There's not a single performance on here that was as good as Zendaya's, and I watched all of them. One of the most perplexing snubs. Also MJ Rodriguez deserves to be in this category over Reese.
Also /3rtful nobody would have thought Huston or Bates wouldn’t be back, Gay Harden I could understand.
Gay Harden is the youngest of the trio. Most likely to be seen as desirable for mature and mannered parts. Huston is turning down junk when not in a Wes Anderson movie and Bates is fighting for material that'll have her in award season good graces on the film side.
Here’s hoping the De Niro snub is a sign that Irishman is losing steam. The sooner that bloated vanity project is forgotten, the better.
Per Jenelle Riley on twitter, they didn't nominate DeNiro because they thought he was mean about them in his Cecil B. DeMille acceptance speech in 2011. It's HFPA; they do things like that. (They didn't nominate him for Silver Linings Playbook either.)
Maybe also because De Niro isn't really that awards-worthy in the film? He does the job, but it's probably the weakest performance of the main cast.
Thanks Suzanne. Peggy Sue, I know I'm a cunt but honestly blame the American healthcare system. My insurance ran out and my psychotropic meds are just too costly to refill at the moment.
Lupita snub aside, they did good this year.
A season without Streep, Kidman, Mirren or Blanchett. Is that too much too ask?
Guys, you’re ineligible for best motion picture if you’re foreign language.
Love those UNBELIEVABLE nominations most of all.
Though I love my Queen Blanchett, Constance Wu should have gotten nominated. Lets replace the Queens of acting:
Helen Mirren - Joey King (The Act)
Nicole Kidman - Zendaya (Euphoria)
Meryl Streep - Emma Thompson (Years and Years)
Cate Blanchett - Constance Wu
Joey King is already nominated.
Eh....
The score for The Irishman is great.
Eastwood has completely lost the creativity he had in the 90s and 00s, but he can still get great performances out of great actors. Kathy Bates deserves every notice she’s getting for Richard Jewell. Much like Cooper in American Sniper, an outstanding performance in a flawed film.
I knew HFPA loves their movie stars, but do they really have to nom Queen Cate for a severely panned film, over Jessie Buckley or Constance Wu? Do they hav to go for The Bening, when they cld throw a spotlight on Flo Pugh or Zhao (the latter is probably too unknown an actress to them)
Its seems tt whenever thr's a big movie star w a meh or positive performance out, they will scramble to nom him/her over those lesser known talents who deliver better works n deserve the noms more. Sigh...
/3rtful we’ll agree to disagree on seeing it that way. Also if the “real” Suzanne and Peggy Sue are as witty as their fake /3rtful posts then why bother commenting under any handle at all. Also a gross way of talking about mental illness.
Awkwafina for The Farrewel and Banderas for Dolor y Gloria.
Is this the first time that two lead actors of foreign films are nominated?
The Queens of Acting Is such a funny but apt title. This should be a series here at TFE
The Globes did "When They See Us" so dirty! I kinda figured Director would be all male, but not that snub. The lack of minority representation overall here is appalling, HFPA!
I'm not sure if the Globes really have a thing against De Niro. They nodded him for "The Wizard of Lies" when they ... shouldn't have. But Bale over De Niro with Pacino and Pesci, Scorsese, Zaillian, and Drama is certainly a "choice."'
TV nods are wretched.
Who is going to win best drama actress ?? That is the main question...
