93rd Oscars - The Nominations are here!
by Nathaniel R
Mank led the honors for the 93rd Oscars with 10 nominations though it missed in two surprising places (Bset Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing). With most of the Bst Picture contenders scoring six nominations each, Nomadland clearly remains the frontrunner and Chloe Zhao made history becoming the first woman ever to score four nominations in one year (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing). The nominations and more commentary are after the jump. The oscar charts are being updated and will be going up throughout the day
BEST PICTURE
In a major surprise both Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and One Night in Miami failed to make the cut with The Father, Sound of Metal, and Judas and the Black Messiah all benefitting from late surges.

OSCAR CHART UPDATED - YOU CAN VOTE
Several people predicted Vinterberg as a hunch. We did not but good on them! Happy to see him here after a stellar career and mistreatment by the Academy (as he should have taken the Best Foreign Language Feature Oscar for Festen/Celebration way back in 1998 but he wasn't nominated). In more important news, this is the first time two women have been nominated simultaneously in the category and this is the first time two Asians have competed in the category.
.
OSCAR CHART UPDATED - VOTE DAILY
This is only the second time two black women have been nominated simultaneously in this category (the first was in 1972 with Diana Ross and Cicely Tyson both competing)
Despite a volatile precursor season, Oscar went with the somewhat expected lineup here. The most precursor honored player that didn't land here was Helena Zengel in News of the World. And Jodie Foster's Globe win and subsequent miss here is interesting in that that hasn't happend in 44 years. The last such instance was Katharine Ross in Voyage of the Damned (1976)
.
OSCAR CHART UPDATED - VOTE DAILY
This is the first time Best Actor has been majority men of color and the first time two Asians have competed in any acting category. This was a tough break for Delroy Lindo from Da 5 Bloods but precursors just didn't push him hard enough. Given Another Round's Best Director nomination, we're guessing Mads Mikkelsen was in sixth place here rather than Delroy Lindo.
.
OSCAR CHART UPDATED - vote daily
Did you hear? Both Judas and the Black Messiah are supporting characters in the movie called Judas and the Black Messiah. Category Fraud ridiculousness. The film has two male leads and both were nominated for supporting, proving once again that Oscar voters have no respect for character actors, preferring movie stars in the categories designed for non-headliners.
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
.
Recency helped The White Tiger land here. And also it's very writerly nature given the excessive narration and being based on a best-seller. These nominations were an unlucky break for First Cow and Ma Rainey. We love Ma Rainey but we're glad it didn't score here as there wasn't much adaptation of August Wilson's brilliant play. Not that there should have been. It was fine the way it was. Brilliant already.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
.
Recency helped Judas and Sound of Metal held on too. Mank proved to be the film without enough support from the writer's branch which is interesting since it's about a writer and about writing movies.
ORIGINAL SONG
Very happy for "Husavik" which should clearly win.
PRODUCTION DESIGN
.
The Production design branch of the Academy just can't get enough of Christopher Nolan's movies, can they? This is a surprising (but deserved) get for The Father though.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
.
We correctly guessed that they'd finally nominated Bobbitt for late-breaking Judas but we still don't get what Trial of the Chicago 7 is doing here.
COSTUME DESIGN
.
Pinnochio surprises. We probably shoudln't have predicted Ammonite given its lack of a CDG nomination but we though that branch would favor Michael O'Connor's work again. Only 1 Best Picture nominee is competing here which is a fun change of pace.
ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND
.
Greyhound managed to score one nomination after all. And Soul is th first animated film to score in Sound in a bit.
ORIGINAL SCORE
.
Raise your hand if you knew that Terence Blanchard would be the only Oscar nominee from Da 5 Bloods. (We did not).
VISUAL EFFECTS
.
The Academy had the chance to make humanitarian history here and honor the very deserving Welcome to Chechnya. They blew it.
FILM EDITING
.
We're thrilled that The Father made it but we think Trial of the Chicago 7 easily wins this which is a pity as the others are so artful and interesting in the editing department.
MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING
Nice group don't you think?
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
.
In a major surprise Hong Kong scores here despite being about teenagers which is not really an Oscar draw in this category. The others were expected but for Tunisia though it's fans were very passionate so it wasn't much of a surprise.
LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM
ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
.
As expected. This is the first time Pixar has managed two nominations in a single year in this category though they've won half of these trophies so it's easy to not notice that.
ANIMATED SHORT FILM
.
Hmmm. Very happy for Opera and Yes People.
DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
.
An insanely competitive category this year though we're bummed for Dick Johnson is Dead and Welcome to Chechnya our two fav docs of the year.
DOCUMENTARY (SHORT)
.
Almost nailed the predictions in this category. Alas, our favourite of the 10 finalists (Speed Cubers) didn't mak it. Perhaps it was just too happy for this category that generally loves misery.
AND THAT'S THAT. CHART UPDATES COMING ALL DAY TODAY.

Finally the Academy got over their Asian actors bias!
husavic made it - yay, the whales and the elves will be happy
Oh fuck off. The Academy finally recognizes more Asian actors and movies, but ppl are still judging cause no director or more picture noms for Black movies.
Stop it with the “me,me,me” complaints. There are other minorities out there.
GlennfansVision:White mediocrity always wins. How about that, haters! The first to be nominated for a razzie and an Oscar for the same performance in 40 years!
Delroy Lindo in Da 5 Bloods is the real robbery in daylight. That monologue alone is better than Oldman’s old schtick in Mank.
@Ricky - EXACTLY ! One of the freshest, innovative movie line-ups in years ! (with exception of Chicago 7 ... and gladly no News of the World) but lots of love as well for THE FATHER !
(they could have done 9 and put Regina's debut in as its so engaging, personal & relevant - not missing Ma Rainey though)
There's so much good here, both for who was included (Riz, Raci, The Miniari, Glenn) as much as for what was left out (Jodie Foster, Chadwick in supporting, etc.).
However, some weird things going on. In particular, it feels like Netflix really underperformed, and if I was in charge of promoting their films I'd get pretty nervous. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom should have been an easy BP nominee. Delroy Lindo should have been able to make it in here. Did they put all of their eggs into Trial and Mank?
Also, I find LaKeith's nomination to be shocking. On the one hand, he's a total lead in his film - even more so than Daniel because of the framing device. On the other hand, he's absolutely one of the best young actors working today, and he gives a really good performance here, so I'm glad to see him nominated. Could he upset Daniel?
Very happy to see Glenn. What an interesting career she's had with awards. A massive breakthrough racking five fast nominations, unable to get traction for over a decade, she turned to TV, and then came back and scored 3 noms in less than ten years.. That's pretty incredible, and she's done it all while working hard to get some of those projects made when nobody wanted them. Hopefully the netflix machine goes to bat for her here over Mank.
Finally, Viola makes history. She's the 2nd Black actress nominated after winning - a rare occurrence. The first Black actress with multiple Best Actress nominations. And the most nominated Black actress of all time. While she's my favorite for the win, I don't think it will happen. But thank goodness she's being honored and now has more time to make films.
Is Vinterberg the first DOGME director to be nominated in that category? I think so.
I'll bet Lars Von Trier isn't happy this morning. Or maybe he is. Who knows?
VANESSA KIRBY !!!
RIZ AHMED !!!
CHLOE ZHAO !!!
STEVEN YEUN !!!
What a great day. Thank you, Academy.
Also, thank goodness Aaron Sorkin missed!
I think the tell that Mank is this year's nomination leader that goes home with 1-3 Oscars... no screenplay nomination. I actually think they had the strongest narrative there for a win (e.g., the politics, Fincher's father, etc.).
Here is what may have happened: Over 500 voters love JATBM. 227 (the number of votes for an acting nomination) or so thought Stanfield was the lead and voted Kaluuya as the supporting role (that was WB's campaign) and the other 227 or so thought Kaluuya was the lead since he plays Fred Hampton in a Fred Hampton biography.
I predicted the snubs for Ma Rainey and One Night in Miami for two reasons: the Academy is still beholden to studio thinking so Netflix was only going to get two and Amazon one. Since Ma Rainey and One Night are more theatrical (especially Ma Rainey's monologues/dialogue) than cinematic they were the odd ones out.
Also, more exciting stats:
Multiple Asian (American and British) actors nominated in Best Actor, and the first time that Men of Color are the majority.
This is the same for supporting actor, and I'm pretty sure it's the first year we have more Men of color, overall, nominated in the Actor races than white men in the actor categories.
Only the second time 2 Best Actress nominees are Black. Diana Ross' Billie Holiday was also in the mix the last time that happened.
I don't think any of this is an accident. As many, and I think Nathaniel, noted in the Oscar so White years, Actors of color (and directors and writers) will make it when they're given the roles and the money to make films that are in the academy's wheelhouse. That's finally happening, and I suspect it matters just as much if not more than the expansion of the academy.
A real worthy slate of nominations overall, though I'm disappointed that One Night in Miami didn't get more love. Love him, but Regina King would absolutely take David Fincher's place in the Director lineup for me.
Leave it to the most shameless case of category fraud to finally get Lakeith his first nomination! lol
These are things i'm happy about
Seyfried
Raci
Day
News of the World score
One Night in Miami song
Vinterburg
No Ma Rainey in Picture
No double for Boseman
No Leto
No Adams
Oldman great with all scene partners
things i'm less happy about but can live with
No Murray or Rylance
Close not that she's bad in it just I don't want her to win for it
Bakalova worst acting nominee
Yuen I don't get the love for him
Stanfield he's the more the Lead than Kaluuya
Fennell guess why?
The terrible visual effects line up
I wish I could explain to young actressexuals just how dead Glenn Close’s film career looked 10 years ago. You almost had to be there to understand what a spectacular comeback she's made.
@J, the LaKeith and Daniel noms reminds me of how the Friends actors all went supporting for the first 7 season of awards contention because "we're all supporting each other." It's really silly, but especially here since the film isn't a big ensemble.
I wish the controversy over two leads committing category fraud exploded and voters decided to punish them both. Maybe then Raci or Odom could win!
The Academy has rules for everything. So, they should do something about this. They should set rules to determine when a performance is lead, based on a combination of time on screen, relevance to the story and maybe something else. Films would submit the names of the leads and a special Committee reviews them and rejects any instance of fraud. The list of Leads would be made public and any votes for a lead in supporting would be discarded.
So can we start campaigning for Cheryl Boone Isaacs to get the honorary Oscar already? This is a sea change.
Happy for:
Youn Yuh-Jung, Lakeith Stanfield, Paul Raci, Glenn Close, Terence Blanchard, Riz Ahmed Collective, Quo Vadis Aida and Time.
Sad for the omission of:
First Cow, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Dear Comrades, Sidney Flanigan, Glynn Turman, Charles Dance, Candice Bergen, Swankie and Linda May.
That Hong Kong nom in Best International Film, omg! I was as pessimistic as Nathaniel thinking that Parasite was a fluke and that they would go back to nominate anything but Asian films again. But nope. I’m so happy!
@Fadhil: so pointing out the lack of one means we can't celebrate the inclusion of others? Your ani-Blackness is showing. This is why POC is an ineffective term. *eyeroll*
I think I heard 5 names for Nomadland's best Pic nom. Didn't they cap the nr of producers at three for the best picture nomination?
I’m upset Ellen was snubbed! She could’ve made a new record if she won this year. Not fair!
Supporting Actress winner likelihood order:
1. Bakalova
2. Youn
3. Close
4. Seyfried
5. Colman
As for wins
Actress between Mulligan & McDormand I think with Day as a dark horse it's been 20 years since Halle Berry.
Actor Hopkins is in a stronger position now than Boseman and no double dipping or Best Picture may mean the love isn't as strong so he loses.
S Actor Kaluuya but he could split votes allowing Raci or Cohen to break through
S Actress Close though I can't believe she'd win a Razzie and an Oscar maybe Seyfried due to the Mank love,Youn as Minari is beloved at the moment
Excited for 2 female director noms, but did NOT like how they added Fennell’s name at end out of alphabetical order to make a more dramatic moment. It seems this was the only category they did this in
Been praising The man who sold his skin... and whoomp! there it is! :)
Happy for all The father and Promising young woman noms, also for Glenn's supporting nom, Another round directors' nom and White tiger for best screenplay! :)
The only 2 gategories I predicted fully were Best actress and Best cinematography, all others had 1 or even 2 different. Although I'm all for the surprises but not when it's a fraud! How can you ever predict a fraud?
DIRECTING is in alphabetical order of film title, not person's name.
Best Oscar nomination morning ever! Beyond ecstatic that NOMADLAND, MINARI, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN and their respective writer/directors and actors all got their well-deserved nods. Also happy for SOUND OF METAL (see Nathaniel, I told you it would do very well!) and Thomas Vinterberg. Sad but not surprised at no Mads, no love for FIRST COW or PALM SPRINGS, and no pic or director for ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI. Also sad that Delroy Lindo did not get in for DA 5 BLOODS.
Also gotta say - Terence Blanchard is a great composer, but his score for DA 5 BLOODS was one of the things I did *not* like about the movie. It was way too intrusive. On theo ther hand, yay for Thomas Newman getting a nod for NEW OF THE WORLD.
Scratching my head with the rest of y'all at the double supporting nod/category fraud for JUDAS. They're totally co-leads. Might this not actually hurt Kaluuya's chances at what we all thought was a lock to win?
Shawshank: They always announce Best Director in alphabetical order by film, not director, so it makes sense that they announced her last, because Promising Young Woman was the last film on that list in alphabetical order:
Another Round
Mank
Minari
Nomadland
Promising Young Woman
That's the order they went with.
Bakalova, Husavik and Collective x 2. I am a happy man now.
If they 3 win... I will be in ecstasy.
Actress winner likelihood order:
1. Day
2. Mulligan
3. Kirby
4. McDormand
5. Davis
It is extremely rare that the Oscar goes to someone who didn't win one of the Golden Globes.
Fadhil - Go fuck yourself, lmao.
First off, Asian actors getting nominated once isn’t the slay you think it is. It’s the exception - not the rule nor is it the evidence that the Academy is getting over their bias as so many people want to believe.
Second, Asian actors getting their shine doesn’t mean Black actors weren’t snubbed. Maybe *gasp* undeserving white actors STILL took their places. Remember last year when Parasite won best picture and there was only 1 nonwhite nominee?
markgordonuk: I doubt she wins both. Close is only the third performance that is a double nominee for Razzie and Oscar, but neither prior double nominee won the Razzie. The closest equivalent to that (Sandra Bullock) required DIFFERENT MOVIES to win & "win" in the same year. Thus: I'm assuming the Fantasy Island duo (Lucy Hale and Maggie Q) are the frontrunners for the Razzie "win" and no one else is really close.
@GF Totally true about Glenn Close's resurgence. It may not be her absolute finest work, but it's hard not to be excited to see her perseverance rewarded.
Whether she wins or not depends how much the Razzies want to derail a possible Oscar for Close, which has to be the main reason they nominated her to begin with. It's not like Hillbilly swept all their categories, and Amy Adams was conspicuously left out. They have it in for Close, but how much is the question now.
Would be nice if after the announcements the first thing people didn't discuss how many of this race got nominated how many women got nominated. The way people react makes BAFTA's way make sence.
Seems like they should just vote for the best men and women separately for directing, and by race for acting so they can manipulate it to get a distribution to appease people. Seems like optics count more than rewarding what you think is actually best.
I haven't seen Judas and the Black Messiah yet to get mad at Stanfield being nominated for supporting actor. It seems Kaluuya's acting was strong enough to pull Stanfield with him. Anyway I wouldn't have liked Boseman to be nominated for 5 Bloods -- there simply are more people out there to be celebrated! It'd be good to see Lindo getting the fifth slot as supporting, even with the studio campaigning for lead role. It would make sense within the film, and it would have been highly well deserved.
Yay for Sorking being shut out and Vinterberg getting in! The direction of the protests scenes in TTOC7 was remarkably clumsy imo.
Loved the design of the nomination cards onscreen.
Who cares about the Razzies ? ... why do we even need to talk about them when its time to celebrate good things ?
whunk: That's not even a factor for the win, though. The Razzies announce their "winners" the day before the Oscars do, so by the time the "wins" are in, the votes have been counted for the other ceremony. The nomination is the discouraging factor in and of itself. Does that alone stop the win? If Close were going for win TWO, it might well be enough. But this is win ONE. And it's Glenn Close.
The almost venomous hatred you have for Indian people is so laughable - especially when you instinctively need to tear us down so you can lift up other people of color. Typical white gay.
I’m just going to pretend Stanfield is getting a time displaced supporting mom for Short Term 12
There's something deliciously ironic about MANK getting all those Oscar nominations except for screenplay.
I have plenty to complain about regarding these nominations, but A LOT MORE to celebrate so I'm going to revel in the latter a bit more before hemming and hawing. We avoided Jared Leto. That was literally my only wish.
Way to go MINARI and SOUND OF METAL!
The Razzies nominated Close because her online fanbase has become so unbearable. You all only have yourselves to blame.
I guess it's finally time to watch Hillbilly Elegy.
The good : Close, Vintenberg, Stanfield, Youn, Kirby, no Leto
The bad : Bakalova, Borat ( argh! ) , no Mikkelsen , no Rahim, no Burstyn, no Foster, no Fishback, no One Night in Miami for Best picture .
What Glenn Close comeback ? All the films she's starred in the past decade were amateurishly constructed and didn't make substantial profit. Also the Nobbs and HE performances are mediocre at best. Only her performance in The Wife stands out, although it's not worthy of an Oscar win.
Category “fraud” is just marketing which is why it doesn’t bother me. Corporations are always trying to maximize their profit and awards are marketing tools. However what’s egregious is the academy’s acting branch not seeing Black actors as film leads. Stanfield was campaigned by his studio in lead.
The good:
* The strong showing for Minari, a lovely film in every way
* The strong showing for Promising Young Woman--I did NOT think it would get in for Best Picture and Best Director.
* Bakalova!
* This is a REALLY good Best Picture lineup. While Mank is not my favorite, I seemed to like it more than most here, and I thought it was more than deserving in the Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress, and Director categories. I would take out The Trial of the Chicago 7 and replace it with Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, though.
* Vinterberg's nod in Best Director
* I don't like to root AGAINST people getting nods ... but I'm glad Burstyn didn't make it for Pieces of a Woman. I thought she was kind of off, and the film itself was really underwhelming.
The bad:
* Glenn. Sorry, fans. I don't think it's Razzie-worthy, but I certainly don't think it's Oscar nomination-worthy. I think she's winning, though, and then hopefully people will stop going on and on (and on and on ...) about her Oscar record.
* I would have liked to see Lindo get a Best Actor nod for Da 5 Bloods. It's a strong category this year, though, so I'm not sure who I'd take out ...
* I would have liked to see Pike or Pfeiffer get in.
* I am happy to see Stanfield become an Oscar nominee--he is a wonderful actor--but I'm hoping this doesn't split votes ... I think Kaluuya really deserves this win.
