Curio: Alex Kittle, A.K.A. Guilty Cubicle

Alexa here. I've been a follower of Alex Kittle's for a long time.  She's blogged furiously about art and film for years (previously as Film Forager and now here), and her tastes run closely to mine: feminism, cult oddities, Cindy Sherman, Technicolor musicals and The Apartment are but a few her passions. Alex also also makes art in her free time (although I don't know how she has any), specifically movie-themed prints, postcards, and posters, under the etsy banner Guilty Cubicle.

A sample of some of my favorite designs of hers...

Curio: A Mug for Every Mood

Alexa here.  After more than a year on the wagon, I am back on the sauce with a vengeance. To clarify, I am talking about coffee.  In an effort to channel my more zen-like, less anxiety-ridden self, I cut it out. (I also hated feeling a slave to the Starbucks down the road.) But my chill, non-caffeinated self has become too sleepy of late; so I cleaned out our grind and brew, stocked up on some David Lynch Signature Blend, and decided to splurge on some new mugs. Here are some movie-centric ones I've considered buying during my trip back to the dark side...

Curio: Mad Max in Lego

Alexa here. Flickr user Lego Will has been making the rounds lately for his series of Lego creations titled Lego Wasteland. Will has made a wide range of vehicles inspired by the Mad Max films, which he built in anticipation of the release of Mad Max: Fury Road. What makes them so special is that they are not exact replicas of the apocalypse machines in the film, but are staggeringly detailed creations that embody the spirit of George Miller's world. Everything is awesome indeed.

Curio: Parroting Pitch Perfect

Alexa here with your weekly arts and crafts.  Since I spent all weekend revisiting and obsessing over the end of Mad Men I wasn't amongst the throngs seeing Pitch Perfect 2. The first is certainly the most quoted film of the past 5 years in my house; I do worry that this one will try too hard to be just as aca-quotable and fall flat for me. Also, the presence of a sequel might mean it's time for me to (begrudgingly) retire some quotes from the first. So by way of eulogy, here are some of my favorite Pitch Perfect quote arts and crafts. Yes, I may own a few of these...

Perfect ending throw pillow available here.

Curio: Mad Men Parting Gifts

Alexa here, shedding a tear for the loss of our beloved Mad Men. Possibly the biggest thrill of my life as an artist was when Christina Hendricks herself purchased a load of my Mad Men playing cards and postcards as gifts for the final days of filming. I don't know who exactly she gave them to, but some days I like to imagine that Jon Hamm is playing poker with something I once handled.

Shameless plug: you can still buy them at my shop.

One of the things I've loved the most about the show is how it has inspired so many people creatively, like the wild resurgence of Mid-century modern interior design, fashion, and visual art. One of my favorite offshoots was Dyna Moe's Mad Men Illustrated. Dyna, a New York illustrator, has created illustrations for every episode of the show's run, and was eventually commissioned by AMC to create the Mad Men Yourself app and the book Mad Men: The Illustrated World.  She is still doing illustrations for every episode; you can see them all on her tumblr.

More arts and crafts after the jump...
