God, Faye's so fantastic in this movie! My fav performance in the CHINATOWN...and possibly that year for actresses. What a strong year that was!
i know. was anyone ever on fire to the degree that Dunaway was in the mid 70s?
I love that Faye made the most of the three big opportunities she was given (i.e., the so-called 'roles of a lifetime').
Bonnie and Clyde, Network, Chinatown. Three huge home-runs.

1974, second best year for movie ever (after 1939 of course)? Chinatown, A Woman Under The Influence, The Conversation, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Godfather Part II, Blazing Saddles, AND Young Frankenstein? All winners.
I think 1976 was a better year than 1974 (Rocky, Network, Taxi Driver, All President's Men, Carrie, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Bound for Glory...)
She was also exceptional in Mommie Dearest, which the film itself was critically panned and was hated by Faye Dunaway herself. I found it hilarious.
I agree that Dunaway is fantastic in CHINATOWN but I'm with Burstyn's winning...but the frontrunners were great: Rowlands, Carroll, Perrine and Faye...then the uneligible Liv Ullmann (SCENE FROM A MARRIAGE), the golden globe winner Raquel Welch (I'm not jocking) and if THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITTMAN had had a theatrical release you'd have found also Cecily Tyson in the best actress race

Brilliant performance. A film noir staple. Too bad the cuckoo eventually took over her. She remains one of the greats.
Burstyn's Alice performance was what got me into Oscar obsession when I was 7 and watched the movie. I loved her so much I went to a very retro IMDb and loved knowing she won Lead Actress that year.
But Dunaway, Burstyn and the brilliant Rowlands were all deserving. They don't make categories like that anymore.
