Could Fassbender be eyeing Oscar?Andreas here. Want to see end-of-year craziness in action? Look at today: first, the Boston Society of Film Critics announces their awards, then before they've finished, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Online start tag-teaming it! It all starts to blend together sometimes -- Emmanuel Plummer won for something called Drivemaids? -- but no worries, we've got it straightened out:

As awards season gets rolling, the LAFCA gives us a breath of fresh air -- or, if you will, a dose of sanity. They're clearly not trying to predict the Oscars, as those bold Actor/Actress selections prove. And some other surprises: Patton Oswalt! Hanna! The British doc The Arbor! (Have you seen that? If not, it's on Netflix Instant and very worth your time.)

Now for the NYFCO's choices...
PICTURE The Artist
Amongst a bunch of expected picks (The Artist, The Descendants, Streep), the shocker here is Best Actor. No Pitt, Clooney, or Dujardin in sight; instead, it's a trio of critically adored performances in small movies that'll need all the help they can get. So kudos to the NYFCO for giving those guys and the gals from Bridesmaids a boost!
Between these critics' awards and the BSFC earlier today, a few early favorites are emerging: The Descendants vs. The Artist, Brooks vs. Plummer, and A Separation representing the rest of the world. How many of these trends will keep going into Oscar season? This early, to quote William Goldman, "nobody knows anything." Which of these critics' picks are you most delighted by?

LAFCA, definitely LAFCA. Fassbender should win all possible awards.
Wasn't the runner up was Kiki not Davis?
McCarthy picks up critics award number two-I'm starting to think that Globe nom on Thursday is a real possibility!!!

It's so great that A Separation is being rewarded outside the Foreign Film category. Such a great film!
Totally suprised with The Descendants winning Best Movie without previous mentions to Payne or Clooney. Did LAFCA really liked it or what?
Final note to all the groups voting out there: If you want to reward Chastain or Fassbender, please do but remember you are films critics and you're supposed to be able to pick just one or two favorite performances. Thank You.
The lack of Elizabeth Olsen in these critic's awards is depressing me. It was such a breath-taking introverted performance.

thanks for covering this for me. It's funny when it comes to critics orgs predicting oscar because none of these groups have seen EXTREMELY LOUD and having just done that, methinks Oscar gonna like.

I am very happy that Michael Shannon is getting major attention. He deserves it. I'm not sure why, but his performance kind of reminds me of Jack Lemmon in Save The Tiger -- an everyman facing an existential crisis in a small but ambitious movie.
LA keeps bringing up the most intriguing choices in Actress, both Lead and Supporting. I really look forward to their picks in these categories.
Michael Shannon is nominated almost all awards (Houston, Washington DC, Spirit, Detroit),
runner-up in LA and win in NY Online. Hope he will get nomination from the major awards.
Yay Melissa McCarthy!! And darn @ Kiki not getting it, but at least she was runner-up. :) And yay for Viola finally [almost] getting recognized.
EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE will end up being the front runner. Standing ovation at the screening which I attended. Thomas Horn is a revelation. If anyone beats Fassbender, I'll only be happy if it's little Thomas Horn.
Susan -- yeah, if Thomas Horn was a girl, he'd be a lock for some sort of nomination even if it was category fraud. but we know that they don't let little boys steal the honor from the grown men. They respect the grown men too much.

Happy for Jessica Chastain and Dante Ferretti ( patriotic heart =) ) at LAFCA. And for La Streep at NYFCO.
