DC Critics Love Movies About Movies... And Dogs
This year marked the 10th anniversary for the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association. What a mouthful their name is. Henceforth WAFCA which omits the DC part but they like it that way. In their very first year they picked an odd duck for Best Picture by way of the Stiff With Prestige Adaptation Road to Perdition but since then they've hewed much closer to Oscar, only giving two top prizes to films that weren't eventually Best Picture nominees or winners (Eternal Sunshine and United 93). This year they went crazy for movies about movies... with dogs.
Let me be clear... In no way does my happy photoshopping imply that President Obama is a member of WAFCA though the Obamas are dog friendly. It's just me thinking 'bout DC and the movies.
Here are the WAFCA prizes...
Film The Artist
Director Martin Scorsese, Hugo
Actress Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn
Actor George Clooney, The Descendants
Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer, The Help
Supporting Actor Albert Brooks, Drive
Acting Ensemble Bridesmaids
Adapted Screenplay Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash The Descendants
Original Screenplay Will Reiser for 50/50
Animated Feature Rango
Documentary Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams
Foreign Language Film Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In
Art Direction Dante Ferretti and Francesca LoSchiavo for Hugo
Cinemagotraphy Emmanuel Lubeszki for The Tree of Life
Score Ludovic Bource for The Artist
The Artist and Hugo are certainly starting the awards season off well. Given that they both opened for the Thanksgiving Holiday does this mean next Thanksgiving we'll see an even larger clusterfuck than this year's insanity?
How long do you think it'll be before one of the critics groups gives the Supporting Actress prize to one or all of the Bridesmaids? Monty didn't totally go for Bridesmaids but then he's not a dog person... er, cat.

I'm torn on all of this 50/50 love. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, but I found the direction and acting more to note than the script. It's all to due with the Bryce Dallas Howard is evil thing; an oddly prevalent part of 2011 movie-going. She's written to one-note, it bugs me that the film is getting such accolades, even if for the most part it's a work I was taken by. Oh well.
Really liked the choices they've made, especially regarding Bridesmaids for Acting Ensemble.
yaya Bridesmaids! so happy they nominated Dame Melissa. The first of many I'm sure! #lava
I think McCarthy gets in on at-least one of the big precursors to Oscar (SAG or the GG's seem the most likely), but ultimately fizzles out. I do really think that she'll make one of them, though, which I'm excited for.
Hey. What is up with "Arthur" from Beginners not receiving any canine love on the awards circuit ? My trusty terrier, Stapleton, was completely mesmerized by his performance. Stapleton spent the entire movie next to me watching along. Each time Arthur vocalized his sadness at being left behind Stapleton would look at the screen with ears perked. His performance truly touched Stapleton way down deep. That is worthy of some award don't ya think ?
Billy -- there are so many awesome dogs in the movies this year -- including Arthur yes! -- that i even have been wanting a dog. and i'm not a dog person really.
but yes. LOVVVVVVEEE Arthur. he speaks so eloquently.
Love it that you made an effort to write up these critics' awards in a fun and DIFFERENT way. Definitely raised a chuckle.
Steve G -- thank u. i do try. I'm not sure it's what the world wants given the way the web rolls but it's the only way i can do it without feeling like a machine, the having fun with it ;)
We don't often think of filmmakers as fans, but that's all they really are. They're the cinephiles who took the torch from a previous generation. Whether actor or director, cast or crew, all filmmakers started somewhere as movie aficionados. Even the great Martin Scorsese has a love of film that predates his career as a director. In his latest work Hugo, Marty takes the time to show moviegoers just how big a fan he is of movies. BRIDESMAIDS yay! best ensemble of the year by far!
