Vanity Fair 2011: "The Young and Beautiful"

The annual Hollywood Issue cover of Vanity Fair has been revealed with. It's called "The Young and Beautiful"
After the jump I've broken it down into sections so you can see it more clearly... still waiting for a super hi-res version though you can see a fairly good image at Vanity Fair's site. But nothing hi-res enough to print or see faces beautifully large. VF's site links are malfunctioning so you can't yet read about the making of the cover just yet.
But here's blown up images for you... I'm a giver.
Green Lantern, Jakey, Oscar Hosts (and Future Winners?)
Still ascending superstars Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway and James Franco get the cover. The rest of the stars have to settle for the foldout; "The Young and Beautiful" "The Hollywood Food Chain"

On the middle fold we see Jennifer Lawrence and Olivia Wilde sandwiching lucky man Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde. Then precursor season fixtures Jesse Eisenberg and Mila Kunis. Love Mila's outfit and placement. Talk about focus pulling.
Although if we're talking about "focus pulling" practically all I can see in this middle section is the headline "When Thelma Met Louise (and Brad): The Making of a Revolutionary Film" YES PLEASE.

I'm not sure if Robert Duvall, peaking between the sultry sloped lines of Mila Kunis's pose and seated Joseph Gordon Levitt make it onto the middle fold or if he's in the crease. But he gets a special credit...
And introducing Robert Duvall as Fritz, the gruff but sage bartender.
Cute.
But here we see Duvall, JGL, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones (I didn't recognize her! From a distance I totally thought it was Marion Cotillard), Garrett Hedlund and Noomi Rapace. For no good reason at all the the kitty cat doesn't get a credit.
Only time will tell if some of these people are like "who?" in ten years. Investigations of past covers (we used to do those at the old blog) reveal that fortunes vary wildly after this big cover "I'm Hot Right Now!" moment.
Who would you bet on as the 5 biggest stars from this cover come 2019?
They claim these are "just the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment" so who would you say is missing? I mean besides Ryan Gosling...

wtf Robert Duvall.
Robert Duvall is so out of place among a group of twenty- and thirtysomethings lol
My predictions: Excluding Robert Duvall, Gyllenhaal, Hathaway, JGL, Franco (who will then be a director/ actor/ writer/ poet/ Bono-esque figure), and Garfield will be the biggest stars in 2019.
I could be completely wrong, but I see Noomi Rapace as a passing B-list star and I've never gotten what's the big deal with Ryan Reynolds. Jesse Eisenberg may still be scoring some indie hits from time to time, but his nerdy awkwardness won't work with adult roles as easily as it does with teen/young adult ones.
^In other words, minus Garfield, the newest members of the cover are not here to stay. The older ones are established and will last. If they wanted real up-and-coming stars from this Oscar season, they might have sought out Armie Hammer and Rooney Mara (though I don't know that she'll last either... at least we'll know her next year).
I think Hathaway, Gyllenhaal, Garfield and Franco. That's just four. I can't see any of the others becoming really famous.
I agree with Evan and I also guess Mila Kunis will be a stable B+ star in 2019.
But I don't see anything screaming "STAR!" in Noomi Rapace...
Now where is Michelle Williams, Rosario Dawson, Mia Wasikowska, Natalie Portman, Ryan Gosling, Sam Riley, Kirsten Dunst?
Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams, Dakota Fanning...
I think you're underestimating Jennifer Lawrence, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and even Anthony Mackie.
I think, if given the right roles (the roles Denzel Washington got during his 90s run, for example), Mackie will succeed.
I see Gordon-Levitt become a prominent independent films' feature in the future. And since we've seen he can do comedy, romance and drama equally well and he's been in a huge hit entering the 2010s, I don't see why he won't build from here.
And JLawrence... Beauty + intelligence + charisma + not afraid of deglam = overrated, yes, but still I believe she'll get far.
And yes I agree with Gylenhaal/Franco/Hathaway/Garfield.
One thing: WHERE THE HELL IS MY EMMA STONE in this issue?! No fair.
Andrew Garfield, Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman ansd Noomi Rapace in SH2...I really don't see Garret Hedlund as a great actor, despite being cast as Dean Moriarty in On The Road.
No Armie Hammer, Rooney Mara or Emma Stone? Zoinks!
Since I don't really think people like Hathaway, Gyllenhaal and Franco should be on there anyway (unless the point is that they're on the cover, welcoming us before handing over to the new up-and-comers who are gunning for their spots), my first thought when looking over the faces was...
Where the hell is EMMA STONE?

Emma Stone is the big "snub" here. If there was a breakout star in 2010, it was her. I suppose Hailee Steinfeld too, but she was probably too young for this "bar theme" photo shoot. Heh.
Wow, it's co-ed again. And 15 people is a lot for these VF covers, no? Hathaway, Gyllenhaal, Garfield, and Franco are the only ones I can see being big in ten years, plus maybe JGL and Eisenberg. One of these days both Fannings better get on this cover.
And for a second I though that was Megan Fox between Mackie and Eisenberg and I was about to scream bloody Mary, then realized it's just Olivia Wilde...

Maybe Jake and Lawrence too but Lawrence is just too fresh to know and I'm kinda worried about Jake's career. Things can go bad easily.
That Winslet-Streep-Redgrave etc cover (don't remember the year) is my favorite.
Ryan Reynolds is the Matthew Mcconaughey of this generation I think, he will stick around for a while even though he is really bland, plus he's friends with Sandra Bullock that's worth SOMETHING right?.
I agree with most it will be Hathaway, Garfield, Franco, Kunis and Reynolds in 2019

What happened to Hathway's hair? What's up with Wilde's "dress"? Why do all the men get to wear nice suits yet all (!) the women are tackily dressed and/or horribly styled?
Rami -- i actually think that's an astute prediction. Reynolds *is* a little McConaughey-esque in terms of how people respond to him (it's always about his looks/body and noone is ever like "what an actor!")
Jenn -- i think 15 is the most they've ever had yes. It used to be more like 10 but i think before it was 13 was the max. and that was too many. but at least no one had to lay down on the floor on this cover ;)
This is probably my second favorite after the "goddess" cover with Meryl a few years back. I think they should have dumped Reynolds for Emma Stone, and put in Hammer instead of Hedlund (though that would have left three Social Networkers, which I can see why they didn't do it-though Hammer is so old Hollywood in a suit he would have fit in perfectly). Otherwise, this is a spectacular issue. And I LOVE that they threw in a cat.
The most random collection of actors on this cover.
I don't like these actors of the moment covers because so few go on to do important, riveting work. Why not a young legends cover, since you already know they have accomplished something:
Women: Kidman, Blanchette, Winslet, Cruz, Berry, Cotillard, Jolie, Swank, etc.
Men: Penn, Dicaprio, Day-Lewis, Pitt, Bardem, Damon, Firth, etc.
At least you know that the Hollywood list has some substance. I am kind of sick giving a platform to hot young things only to realize that their acting abilities fall far short of their physical appearances...
Duvall looks creepy there, next to Mila Kunis's ass, who's sitting like a swan (?) which I guess is glamourous for hen. It's as if he was an old man looking for some fresh meat, and his eyes seem to rest on JGL, maybe he wants to plant ... an idea on him. And sorry, but who the hell is the stripper in the middle also known as Olivia Wilde? There's that one and other two I won't have to wait ten years to to ask who?
Also, I know I have a dirty mind, but why is Jake Gyllenhaal sitting next to a standing (too close) Ryan Reynolds? Only dirty thoughts come to mind in that position. Though I must say I wish Reynolds was the guy standing in front of me in those awkward moments in the subway when you're sitting down and you have some standing just in front of you.
I guess Emma Stone now has covers just for herself alone.
Oh, I totally forgot about Mia Wasikowska-- I kinda doubt she'll be a huge star, but she's so talented that I hope she does end up becoming super high-profile.
I don't get the attraction to Ryan Reynolds in any way-- looks, personality, and least of all acting.
Anne Hathaway is like Angelina Jolie. Both have star quality and if they got the right project from right director, they have big potential to dig.
James Franco? Endlessly.
Andrew Garfield is a hot asset right now, but i believe he’ll be here for long.

Others? struggling for scripts.
But i think Mila Kunis is a hidden treasure. Thanks God Aronofsky has good eyes for this fine lady. I need more Mila Kunis!
Anyone else think Andrew Garfield was Artie from "Glee" for a second?
All I could see looking at the middle section was "women dressed like sluts while the men get to stay covered head-to-toe." Doesn't a mag like VF have a mostly female readership? (I never see any men reading back issues of VF when I'm at the doctor's office.) So why not let one of the guys show a little skin? Why is "looking like a whore" a job requirement only for female actors and not male?
Duvall is like the host of So You Want to Be a Holllywood Star? reality show. "Four of you will be licking my toes in the next five years. Three of you will inevitably experience a messy divorce/very public breakdown and go to rehab. Another three will fade into anonymity or a bad sitcom. And two will be the winner of this contest."
I mean, let's be honest, Duvall can sit there and smile because although the stars remind him of his impending death, he can also grouch about "the young actors today" and be smug with the fact that very few of them is going to have half the longevity of his own career.
I'd really only say Andrew Garfield right now, to be honest. Joseph Gordon Levitt and Anne Hathaway too.
Duvall is by far the best thing about this cover. All women look horrendous. Tragic styling, awful makeup, bad hair, slutty clothes, they all look terrible.
Why is this Olivia Wilde there? Who is she?
I think most of them wont be very big fifteen years from now. The one I see with the biggest lasting potential is Franco.
I think Duvall is perfect here, very cheeky.
What I totally can't deal with is poor Rashida Jones in that trashy leopard print getup. Was Paz de la Huerta busy or something?

anon -- it's true Duvall's career. young stars WISH. That is one long oft rewarded career. I suspect some young Hollywood stars are smart enough to know that they have to fuse with Old Hollywood -- in that New Hollywood only lasts if it becomes establishment -- to endure. This is why I assume Anne Hathaway will be famous til she dies. She seemed to get it right from the start.
The next cover should be called The Bold and the Restless...
I know Rashida Jones is light-skinned, but they sure did an effective job of making her look white. I'm not saying that VF did this, but I'm sick of seeing magazine covers that, in addition to altering bodies, lighten skin tones for women of color.

I wish to see James Frecheville in a cover like this, but I know he is in a very small film :/ hope he'll get an opportunity in hollywood.

A missed opportunity to place separated-at-birth twins Hathaway and Garfield side by side. (If such a photo does exist, can someone point me to it?)
That's Rashida Jones? That's a black woman? I sincerely cannot tell.
How did I miss JGL. More to the point - what is he doing on the lousy third panel? If anyone has a shot at longevity and a Duvall type career (if not being an A-lister) I'd say it's he.
everyone of them looks uncomfortably posed except Jake, maybe Anne, Mackie and JGL. Not like the time this picture conveys, where all the stars seemed to know how to pose.
In ten years from now, I think Anne Hathaway's star will be fading, if not extinguished. She's beautiful, but lacks the talent to remain relevant once her looks go.
I think it'll be Hathaway, Gyllenhaal, Franco, and then Garfield and Gordon-Levitt.

Random Actressexual Thoughts:
Don't underestimate Rashida Jones who is already busting out in movies, TV, recording music, writing comic books and writing screenplays. She's Quincy Jones' daughter, yo! (with original Mod Squad goddess Peggy Lipton, which makes her mixed race, for all you folks obsessing about her skin color).
I loved Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone but I don't yet have a sense of what's possible for her. Those underplayed-emotions-actors can turn out to have a lot more to offer, or...not much more.
As for Noomi Rapace...I'm rooting for her. She was the only thing to recommend in the Dragon Tattoo films...When she put on the blonde wig, I realized what a chameleon she might turn out to be. .....The question is: How's her English? Will she be a quick study like Marion C.?
And can we just give it up for Mila one more time? She was so unexpectedly awesome in Swan.
I don't think one can tell for sure what is going to happen to them. In Hollywood, the one day you can be all over the place and next thing you know you're forgotten and vise versa. Personally, I wish to all of them all the best.
And because I don't see anybody standing up for him, if Garrett Hedlund carries out his role in On The Road, then he's a safe bet.
Also, I agree about the women's dresses, especially Olivia Wilde. Stop with the objectification already!

I predict that everyone in this group will be, at the very least, remembered in conversation if you bring them up.
Example: "I just rewatched The Hurt Locker last night. Anthony Mackie was better than I remembered."
"Oh yeah! Anthony Mackie! He was good! Whatever happened to him?"
Exception: Rashida Jones. Sorta. I think she will be remembered for The Office and other TV work, but for her film work? Nah.
Beside Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams -Which I think they're saved-; I think the five biggest stars for the Vanity Fair cover 2019 will be:
-James Franco: This is the beginning of the stardom. He'll go to Broadway alongside Nicole Kidman; he has two baity projects, he's funny, charming and damn sexy... Even he could have luck in directing.
-Anne Hathaway: The Hollywood IT Girl right now. Even when the film sucks, Hathaway received good notes (She's the best part of the mess "Valentine's Day"). Starring Lone Scherfig's post "An Education" film, the last Nolan's Batman film and the top contender for playing Judy Garland is really impresive. She'll win the Oscar in this decade.
-Joseph Gordon-Levitt: A former child actor with an impresive career and good reputation, especially for the indie circuit. If Jeremy Renner could break the wall...
-Andrew Garfield: The hot British export. Next to Spiderman he got the lead role for the Michael Mann's film "Waiting for Robert Capa"
The fifth spot will be between them:
-Jake Gyllenhaal: These last decisions (Prince of Persia, Rendition) were awful comparing his promising beginning and the peak of his young career with "Brokeback Mountain". Bur he's the talent and presence for return...
-MIla Kunis: Darren Aronofski shows her talent. If she chooses careful the next roles, she would compete directly to Portman and Hathaway.
-Anthony Mackie: Like the last comment. Denzel Washington type of career...
About Noomi Rapace, even if she fails in Hollywood she could return to Europe (Emmanuelle Beart, Kristin Scott Thomas) so I think her situation is mostly for a "win" result
as a photo... love the cover, the rest is a train wreck!
Emma Stone was on the cover last year, probably why she was snubbed this time around.

Most people are mentioning actresses that were on the cover last year, so some were probably already out of the running.
