On the Set: Leo & Jude
Monday, February 14, 2011 at 12:00PM For no particular reason other than that I saw the photos back to back, two of the world's most familiar stars filming their new movies... all star movies at that.
Leo & Jude. Not in the same movie.
Which movie are you most looking forward to? Clint Eastwood's biopic taking on the fascinating J.Edgar Hoover with stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Armie Hammer, Judi Dench, Naomi Watts and Josh Lucas OR Steven Soderbergh's CDC thriller Contagion starring an accidental Talented Mr Ripley reunion Jude Law + Gwyneth Paltrow + Matt Damon and a bunch of other stars, too: Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Ehle, Laurence Fishburne and John Hawkes?
I realize that J. Edgar is claiming that it's a 2012 movie but we all know how fast Clint Eastwood works and he's already filming. I expect it in theaters this December.

I predict big things for j.edgar it will so be a dec 2011 release and the academy has been quiet on clin these past 3 years so it's about time again,leo's first oscar,dench's 7th nod,hammer in support.
contagion may luck out in the supp actress category.
Mark -- yeah. it seems like "duh" to predict Clint's movies for things as everyone does each year even when it doesn't end up working out (as i do myself ;) but you're right that this seems like a gimme. it will only not be a major Oscar comeback if it's really bad.
Nathaniel, that's hardly out of the realm of possibility. ;)
Still, I have oddly high hopes for this. My love for Leo? My interest in Hoover? My lust for Judi Dench? It's probably a combination of all three, plus my lust for Judi Dench.
John Hawkes is in Contagion? When did that happen?
If J. Edgar and Stephen Daldry's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close both make a 2011 release, they're the co-frontrunners.
I need Eastwood (recently) and DiCaprio (almost always, especially recently) about as much as Bening needs parenting advice from Ruffalo in Kids Are All Right. And we all remember how much she said she needed that.
Whereas, I'm all about Contagion, and not just because they shot some of it here in Evanston.
Walter -- i believe it was a mandatory amendent in Hollywood's union contracts: John Hawkes must appear in everything from now on. Because he is great. and you can't get sick of him because you forget who he is inbetween.
Nick -- but doesn't Contagion remind you of that movie with Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo -- didn't they fight some impending plague in the 90s or something?
Swayer -- perhaps. But neither are about nazis so don't count your chickens just yet...

Outbreak! I knew the plot sounded familiar. I was just on T.V. Hated it.
I think Contagion is going to be good, though. And I will see anything with Kate Winslet or Marion Cotillard in it. And they are in it together. !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dustin Lance Black (did i get it right?) might have, again, written a good script and the relationship between the two male characters might be intriguing and, you know, kinda hot. Plus my lust for Judi Dench. OK, i stole that. But it's true.
Contagion, well, the story seems like it could be another nothing movie but Winslet and Paltrow in a movie together? Heaven. For me, of course. Plus Cotillard. Plus Soderbergh.
I’ll take Clint with gay themes. Virus movie – no one and I mean no one anywhere needs this film. They’re better off making a dystopian film where child beauty contestants become self-aware and murder their parents and non-parental adult enablers.
Ha that’s funny when you said how fast Clint Eastwood works. I bet he shout this during shooting,” C’mon people let’s get it done! I don’t want to be late for Oscar season this year. *mumbling* Freaking visual effect! That’s all i get this year?!"
I'm looking forward to J. Edgar. It'll be interesting seeing how Leo somehow becomes that relatively unattractive little frog of a man. Smart move to cast Armie Hammer (dontcha love that name) alongside as Tolson. He looks almost a foot taller than Leo in photos and is just delicious to look at. I've been looking at a lot of the real J.Edgar and Tolson photos (them together) recently. The way they dressed alike in the best fashions of the day. One with Hoover's arm draped over Tolson's shoulder. These guys look like they lived to be in each other's company. Weird to think they may never have consummated their relationship.
I love movies about viruses, each and every one. Plagues of one sort or other have always seemed pretty fascinating. I did used to work in a microbiology lab after all. These are the true horror films for our time. I happen to believe that we'll eventually fall prey to these tiny buggers, myself.
Contagion! Love the cast. Isn't KiKi in it as well? That's reason enough for me.
