Tom Shone reviews Mildred Pierce in full. I didn't finish the article though it was quite good because we're only halfway through but he has interesting things to say on Wood vs. Winslet, with Wood triumphant.
The Fug Girls think this is the best that Liv Tyler has ever looked? What's going on with Liv anyway? Few movie moments of the past decade thrilled me more than her "If you want him, come and claim him" Fellowship of the Ring bit.
Finally, I must thank the fab Lipp Sisters of Basket of Kisses for always keeping us up-to-date on Mad Men news. They are wonderful ladies and good bloggers which is a combo I quite like, don'cha know. A deal has been reached for AMC's flagship show. You can read the details and lots of daily conversations about Mad Men at their fansite. But the nuts and bolts of it is that we get at least two more seasons of the show (it will end with either season six or seven) but we have to wait for March 2012 for Season Five to begin. It'll be so weird not to have Mad Men to fill the space inbetween Oscar seasons.

I was never impressed by Evan Rachel Wood or Holly Hunter in Thirteen. Deborah Kara Unger was best in show. That write-up felt cheap like take down piece on Winslet.
I'm certain she will outshine Jodie Foster this year but will that be enough for the Academy to nominated both women in Best Actress?

I think Shone's piece spoils the ending. I didn't read the part I'm referring to because I don't want to know, but it seemed like he was about to tell us how it ends.
Foster's best performances usually aren't great parts on paper. Which shows she's a much better actress when imparting her own ideas.
/3rtfull - If Tom Shone was the only who said this about Winslet's performance, I'd be inclined to agree with you. However, of the many reviews that I've read, one or two have had similar complaint: The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "She seems more like a mother who can’t figure out what she did wrong, rather than one who believes her daughter can do no wrong and thus obsequiously kisses her feet."
If Winslet fails to capture Mildred's obsession, the entire series wouldn't work. On the other hand, I have absolutely no doubt, from reading her interviews, that Winslet fully understands Mildred's relationship with Veda. I'm baffled as to why it doesn't seem to come through.
In any case, will you be reviewing Mildred Pierce in full once the entire series airs? I'm quite curious as to what you think about it and Winslet's performance.
Finally, here's a great article I just found - Todd Haynes, interviewed by Kate Winslet! The most interesting thing here is that he called Winslet his...never mind, I shan't spoil it for you.
