Oscar Calendar and Today's Linkage

A note before we get to the links. Here's the new Oscar calendar. I'm updating the clock (downloadable) in the side bar as we speak.

  • 12/27/2011 - Nomination Ballots mailed
  • 1/13/2012 - Ballots Due
  • 1/24/2012 - OSCAR NOMINATION MORNING! (aka Christmas!)
  • 2/1/2012 - Voting Ballots mailed
  • 2/6/2012 - Nomination Luncheon
  • 2/12/2012 - All Ballots due
  • 2/26/2012 - OSCAR NIGHT (aka New Year's Eve!)

Links!
Boy Culture SPOILER ALERT writes up the finale party of RuPaul's Drag Race. With video interviews of the cast. (This is the first time I've been happy about the winner of any season. Not only was Raja my favorite contestant but she was also, perhaps not coincidentally, the most obviously movie-aware, referencing Carrie, Heathers, and other movies and classic stars throughout the competition.
Scene Stealers Top Ten movies about Runners. Apparently Track and Field isn't my thing. I was shocked to realized that I've only seen [gulp] 10% of this list. Which is not something I normally can say about top ten movie lists.
Sociological Images asks "who goes to the movies" the answers, given what Hollywood makes, may surprise you.
Marvel commemorates the start of The Avengers production with a set photo. Logo chairs!
My New Plaid Pants commemorates the same by offering up costume design of his own for Chris Evans' Captain America.
Serious Film condemns and defends The King's Speech now that it's out on DVD; Oscar winners have a tough time defending their reputations as history marches on.

Finally...
IFC will make you scroll through five pages for the full list but they're naming the Top 25 Best Female Characters From TV. It's an all time list rather than a current list so don't get too excited about seeing, like, "Tami Taylor" on the list (I'm so obsessed with Friday Night Lights. Final season airing right now). 30 Rock's Liz Lemon is the highest ranking contemporary character (#9) and we can fully get behind #1, especially if it's night time, we're outside, and fanged creatures are approaching us.

I've seen two of those films about runners, 'Chariots of Fire' and one of the Prefontaine films, but I don't remember which one. I think it might have been the Billy Crudup one.

'Chariots of Fire' is one of those films I'm confident in saying that I didn't get them. I wish I was arrogant enough to think that it's everybody else who's wrong about it, but sadly I'm not. So I concede to the general opinion that it isn't actually boring and pointless, which was my initial thought when I saw it.

LOVE that you put a picture of Starbuck on there. Easily the best female performance on TV of the past decade. Sorry Eddie Falco, Polly Walker, Mary-Loise Parker, Sarah Michelle Gellar....and others (not really) :). Also, easily one of the best female performances of the past decade on Film and TV. Actors rarely get the chance to showcase their talents for as long as a period that Katee Sackhoff had on BSG AND knock it out of the park every single time.

Giver her more work!

What a terrible Top 25 TV list. MTM and Lucy should both be ranked higher. Edith Bunker certainly belongs on the list. Endora from Bewitched. Elaine from Seinfeld. Mrs. Fisher from Six Feet Under. Mrs. Kramden from the Honeymooners.

LESLIE KNOPE.

She's the new Liz Lemon. Only 3 dimensional. (Not a slight towards Ms. Lemon, btw.)

Brandz, you and I are TV soulmates. I'm pretty happy with the Top 7 or so, though. Any mention of Lucy Ricardo (who'd have been my #1) and Julia Sugarbaker makes me happy. Anyone who hasn't seen the AIDS episode of Designing Women needs to get on that, stat!

Dominique -- i really can't get over how rounded Leslie Knope is as a character. That show just seemed "okay" at first but it's regularly comedy gold now with every character a delight. I'm totally confused about how it's suddenly so very excellent but it is.

brandz -- good calls on some of those.

my favorite part of the Ru finale:

"....As has become standard during the Drag Race finales, Ru sat down with each of her final gals for “lunch,” which so bitingly consisted of one solo Tic Tac for each party.
“What is this? Thanksgiving?” quipped the eventual winner Raja when she spotted the spread..."

LOL CLASSIC

Okay, but Snoop and Kima should remain on the list. A good list for an entire gender should have had a ratio of 1 supporting character to every four leads, at least one animation role and one character below the age of 13. So that would be precisely 20 leads to precisely 5 supports with one animation role and one character who starts the show below the age of 13. Here, we have 22 leads to 3 supports, NO role for animation and no character who starts the show below the age of 13. Suggestions: Jenna Maroney (the more complicated supporting role) over Liz Lemon (the simplistic Lead) if they need 30 Rock representation or, if they don't need it, Lucille Bluth and, after either of those, to balance the ratio, get the pre-teen character and the animation role, I'd suggest (the admittedly psychotic) Gaz from Invader Zim. Animation psychos are, frankly, a dime a dozen, but, after Eric Cartman, Gaz is maybe the next most deliciously psycho. She kills a guy (by having an elevator slam into the ground) for a video game system, but not before torturing him by stealing all the nearby batteries (this was before rechargable game systems). Already, these actions cement her reputation...but that "death" also leads to the kid bursting out of the wreckage of aformentioned elevator like Superman while screaming his name. It's "IGGINS!"

My request is "two more supports and an animation role" to balance this list to all possible appreciation of TV. What do your suggestions go to forward that. Endora...lead, live action, adult. Edith Bunker...lead, live action, adult. Elaine Benes...lead, live action, adult. Mrs. Kramden...lead, live action, adult. Mrs. Fisher...lead, live action, adult. Mrs. Kramden...lead, live action, adult. So...no supporting roles, no animation roles and no pre-teen roles. Doesn't fix the REAL problems with IFC's list, which are 1. too few supporting roles, 2. not even having a single nod toward the influence of animation and 3. No characters who start the run below the age of 13. Another suggestion of a supporting animation female would be Harley Quinn, but that character's not as perfect a list fix as Gaz, because she's far over the age of 13.
