Links Unchained

Twitch is following the tweets on the casting of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. I have to say it's a little disappointing to hear the name Leonardo DiCaprio. One of Tarantino's greatest gifts is finding A list ready performances from B and C listers and if it's DiCaprio AND Will Smith...
Deadline They're always threatening it but it's actually happening again. Craig Brewer hired to reboot Tarzan. I will be crushed, crushed I tell you, if they don't hire an unknown for the ape man.
Pajiba has an open letter to Blake Lively's publicists concerning the nude pics. Very funny. Love the ending.

Awards Daily I was going to post a "Cast This!" game for the proposed Liz & Dick movie from Martin Scorsese, but Sasha beat me to it. I kind of love her second choice: Charlize Theron. Charlize, with dark hair, would make a FAR  more convincing Elizabeth Taylor than Angelina Jolie would, I must say. Just because Jolie is the closest thing we have to Liz in terms of global icon or wealth and glamour with fascinating love life does not mean she really looks like her.

My New Plaid Pants Quote of the day: Bradley Cooper on Wet Hot American Summer
Stale Popcorn asks a question that does haunt me on occasion: which is the better Marilyn Monroe performance: Bus Stop or The Misfits?
Serious Film I was late linking up to this in the Moulin Rouge! post but it's definitely worth a read. Michael has a push/pull love/hate relationship with Baz Luhrmann's polarizing musical... still!

Off Cinema
TV|Line Mad Men Season 5. The writers are back in the room. Ugh, such a long wait.
Winter is Coming Bitches Hilarious Game of Thrones tumblr
TV|Line Jane Lynch to host the Emmys. 5 things we want to see. I would like to co-sign on #4 (Best in Show related gag) and hoist it up to #1.
Sketchy Details surveys the "Original Score" contenders at the Tony Awards.
Boing Boing which keys on your computer do you hit the most?
Playbill the Spider-Man musical on Broadway owes Julie Taymor tons of funny. See, this is why you pay your bills on time... how embarrassing to have to pay someone who made it such a fiasco after the fact! ;)

And here's the new Robyn video simply because we love her. So should you. And we also love anything that reinforces the potency of the unbroken take; you don't need to cut every .5 seconds to generate visual energy!

There's just something about Robyn's voice. It was created in a beeker labelled "perfect pop star pipes"

Ooh look at this picture of Charlize Theron! I can totally see the possibility of LIz there.

Thanks for the link, Nat!

Will Smith will not accept the lead in Django Unchained. He's a fraud of a superstar and knows one false move his whole set up will fall and he'll be the black Tom Cruise post-Kidman which he doesn't want. Idris Elba is whispered for the possible replacement for a chickenshit Smith -- sort of like Warren Beatty turning down Kill Bill.

Nathan he originally wanted Leo for Hans Landa. You should want Leo to break free from being stale and Tarantino is perfect for that.

Did I tell you Halle Berry is coming to TV? Judy Davis is playing Woody Allen's wife in his new movie?

You linked to my Tony coverage? Thank you. It's such a joy to write about a category where I'd be happy to see any nominee win. Even Sister Act has grown on me from the first time I heard the score.

All of the dumbass antics aside, am I the only one who actually LIKES Blake Lively as an actress? I always seen something in her that I thought was special and she was great in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and The Town.

And I DO NOT want to see Will Smith in a Tarantino film. I like him and I think he's good at what he does, but I don't think he'd mesh well with QT's sensibilities. If he did get involved there would undoubtedly be conflict because you know he's gonna want to make some changes to that script to dumb it down/sanitize it...and that would be a tragedy.

I just don't understand why anyone would turn down a Quentin Tarantino movie.

June 3, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercaroline

Probably because not everyone likes QT? It's understandable, he's overrated and some people must have known it.

The Liz & Dick biopic HAS to be Catherine Zeta-Jones and Clive Owen. I will accept no alternative.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Clive Owen SECONDED...

Am loving the Catherine Zeta-Jones + Clive Owen idea for casting Burton + Taylor. I'd even like a raven-haired Charlize as well.

Aw, Robyn. That video is awesome. Props.

Why is everyone so against Will Smith in a Tarantino film? Think of the soundtrack!

June 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSVG

Zeta Jones and Theron are the only two contemporary actresses that could pull it off. People are making such stupid and non-sense sugestions....Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan, WTF????

Yes, CLive Owen.....Intense, dark, extremely handsome, with loads and loads and loads of sexual magnetism.....

Overrated? He may not be the most original guy in town, but crisp, clean editing, polished performances, iconic, ironic soundtrack choices ("'Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am,' did he just cut the guy's ear off!?") and a love of every kind of movie under the sun. He's at the very least a GOOD director.

The problem with the Burton/Taylor movie is that no one will be happy, there's a HUGE possibility they might not be able to get the voices down right.
My suggestion: make the EXACT same film but change the name of the characters. It'll still be about Burton/Taylor without being about Burton/Taylor. Then the actors will have more freedom and they won't have to turn in impersonations but rather real performances.

June 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichael B

Charlize Theron is 5'10". Elizabeth Taylor was 5'2"...So yeah, it's going to be ridiculous/awkward to see Theron reduced to Kim Kardashian/Hayden Panitierre height.

June 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

anon -- i hope you're not suggesting Kardashian or Panetierre for the role. LOL.

June 3, 2011 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Michael: You can keep the names, not turn in impersonations, and still be utterly classic, c.f. Funny Girl and Erin Brockovich.
