First and Last, 5th Season!

Here we go again. This is the first and last image from a motion picture.

Can you guess the movie? check your guess after the jump

Craig and James pounced immediately to name this The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Well done.

Was this one too easy? That slow longshot ending as Lecter pursues "an old friend" for "dinner" sure is iconic. "Dr. Lecter? Dr. Lecter? Dr. Lecter?"

Silence of the Lambs.

I believe this is Silence of the Lambs?

June 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJames

Dammit, beat me to it. Definitely Silence of the Lambs.

It's The Silence of the Lambs. Praise Jodie Foster, who gave the best performance of this movie ;)

June 24, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Damn Jodie, you are so lazy. She is like the Baz Luhrmann of the actress. Only shows her gargantuan talents once a decade. (with a big difference. some lazy acting in-between). I want the Jodie Foster I loved in Accused, The Silence of the Lambs, Nell (yes, Nell - the world is wrong), Contact... Where are you, Jodie?

June 24, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Yeah. Not the best performance of the year (Jodie has 4 noms from me, 3 of those being silver) but was the Academy ever going to go for Linda Hamilton?

June 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Not 3, 2. (Silver to Laurie and Hamilton. 4th the other two times.) But, really, I'd never put her as the winner.

June 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Definitely Silence of the Lambs

Yeah!!! So easy! hehe Well, maybe not so much, but when one has seen the movie a thousand times you kinda get to recognise some frames! :) From the images of Clarice training in the woods to the credits scrolling down as Dr Lecter gets lost among the crowds... because, you know, he's meeting someone for dinner! Best movie ever! :D

Carlos -- i figure i have to throw a classic in now and then since so many people say they've never guessed one!

Volvagia -- no, the Oscars were never going to go for Linda Hamilton. Sci-fi you know... plus inauspicious roots in what was originally seen as a B horror movie. Never mind that the original Terminator was better than most of the Oscar nominees in 1984. But in fairness to the Academy 1991 was pretty crowded actress-wise... although maybe you could make a case for "supporting actress" in which case she should'a been a "duh" to nominate.

Easily one of the most iconic end shots in movie history.

I know I'm the 300th person to answer this, but I actually know this so I'm excited.

The Silence of the Lambs

"I'm having an old friend for dinner." I would never have guessed it from the first shot, but the last one I knew it instantly.

1991 was such a banner year for actresses. Foster and Hamilton, Irene Jacob, Sarandon and Davis.

*chimes!

June 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPaolo

Hamilton is supporting in my book, too. And I think she could have been nominated - there was precedent: James Cameron-helmed sci-fi sequel, anyone?

June 24, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

By the way, Foster winning here is very very very weird. Recent winner, horror movie, unbelievably subtle acting - not Oscar's cup of tea at all. Of course sometimes a performance is so brilliant that beats all handicaps, but that was still strange. Sarandon would be the obvious choice.

June 24, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

cal -- well, the difference was (precedent-wise) that Alien was a "respectable" franchise whereas Terminator was the garage band kind of film getting a sequel. Plus, Sigourney already had Serious Actress cred which Linda Hamilton never really had.

I'm assuming that Sarandon never became a true threat to Foster mostly because Geena Davis and it might have felt weird to give her it and leave "Thelma" out. I was rooting for Sarandon that year but i deeply love Foster's performance now. At the time i was just so bummed that Pfeiffer had turned down an Oscar winning role. Ouch.

How is Hamilton's role size equal to "supporting", exactly? Yes, she's off-screen for the first half hour (in the director's cut), but there's never more than a five minute gap between her appearances after that, plus she's the narrator, plus, in the director's cut, she has two dream sequences. If any performers were unarguably supports (the central trio (Hamilton, Schwarzie, Furlong) are clearly the leads), Earl Boen and Robert Patrick are. In fact, if I were to say which of the central trio would be most excusable to put in supporting, it'd be Furlong who, after they find Sarah Connor, DOES NOTHING and has a quiet emotional arc IN AN ACTION MOVIE. Everything done after the asylum scene is either an action of Sarah Connor or an action of The Terminator. So, I would NEVER put her in supporting, even if the studio piushing her that way would have secured her a nom.

Still, Davis was already a winner, and Sarandon the obvious overdue... If Foster hadn't won for Accused, I'd see why she won for TSotL so easily...
