Curio: Myrna Loy, Cover Girl
Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 7:11AM Alexa here. Today is Myrna Loy's birthday, so to celebrate this supremely unique, intelligent, plainspoken goddess, I dug up this vintage Picture Play magazine of mine from 1940 with Myrna on the cover.
Myrna goes nautical
Myrna appeared in this 1940 issue in pictures only, ostensibly to promote her upcoming film with William Powell, I Love You Again (their ninth film together), a Regarding Henry-esque amnesiac light romance that was just another opportunity to get the two of them together. Every time I see a film with them I think of their real-life meet cute, so perfectly described in Myrna's autobiography.

And, as one commenter noted, there is a delicious scene at around the one hour mark where you can see Myrna try to be disgusted by Powell, as the scene calls for, but instead she seems to be trying hard to suppress her laughter. It's moments like these that can make even the silliest comedies worthwhile, no?

Love Myrna so much. Thin Man marathon anyone?
Owen - Absolutely! Love the Thin Man movies. Even when they aren't that great, the chemistry between Myrna and Bill is off the charts, and their banter is always fun. Each one of the Thin Man films has at least one notable quotable. I just wish Hollywood would have the confidence in funny women now that it did back then. I fear the "lesson" they learned from Bridesmaids is that people "want" to see gross-out comedies starring women, when what they should have learned is that people want to see GOOD comedies starring FUNNY women.
The Thin Man in general and Myrna Loy in particular always bring a smile to my face.

i love the Thin Man movies too for Myrna & William. weird that i've never written about them really.
Considering this is such a great Oscar blog someone should bring up the fact that Myrna Loy has never been nominated for a competitive Academy Award! The Best Years of Our Lives, a huge Oscar winner, should have scored Loy a nomination. What a crime.
