Crazy in Link

I Need My Fix Kate Winslet for St. John. I want to bury my hands in that rug. Look at it! So comfy.
The Atlantic remembers the worst January releases in recent memory. Ah, the toxic dumping ground.
Towleroad Madonna's new album will be called M.D.N.A ... maybe. So she said but was she serious?
THR reports from the NBR awards ceremony where Hugo was honored. Their photo gallery is from last year though so save the clicking on that.

IndieWire Catherine Deneuve will be honored at Lincoln Center this spring, receiving the Chaplin Award
Gold Derby The DGA's television nominees include actresses!
AWFJ Female film critics name their award winners with The Artist taking the top prize
Animation A big informative piece on Oscar finalist The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore.
Carpetbagger Jean Dujardin tries to impress Robert DeNiro... who is not easily impressed (at the NYFCC awards)

Guardian much about about nothing. They've closed the Natalie Wood case again in case you were wondering.
Scanners doesn't believe film critics should read screenplays until after they've seen the movie (but is happy to dissect them afterwards (Moneyball & Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). I kind of agree but I keep wanting to read Django Unchained. It is tempting me!
Gunaxin on Oscar nominations that look baffling in retrospect to some. Unfortunately it sounds like they didn't even see Howard's End before dissing it. I cry foul. Howard's End is GREAT. Merchant/Ivory movies get no respect and it makes me so angry. They were great filmmakers and that was the best film nominated that year.

Can somebody get me that witch's number?

I had to laugh at the title of the Kate Winslet article - effortlessly gorgeous. Are you kidding me? I can't imagine how many people had a hand in that one photo - from hair, makeup and wardrobe, to lighting and the photographer of course, to manipulation/retouching on computer afterwards (and I guess you could count her personal trainer and surgeon, if you like. She's starting to remind me of Nicole a bit - not in looking like Nicole, but simply in terms of not exactly looking like herself. Or maybe the retouching is really that extensive?)

Re: Natalie. Why did they bother? What was the point?

Oh - the boat's captain has written a book. I knew someone had to be promoting something.

Love the Onion.

And Winslet is looking effortlessly like Madonna in those photos.

The article on baffling Best Picture nominees is actually quite a bad one, considering how many other choices would have been better. It seems like the author just scrolled through the nominees from the past 20 years and picked out the ones he didn't care for or remember. Two Towers really isn't as far behind the other two LOTR movies as some say it is; in fact, I actually like it slightly more than Fellowship. And Beauty and the Beast doesn't hold up well compared to its successors? I realize The Lion King was more popular with general audiences, but from a critical point of view, how many people think it's better than Beauty and the Beast? A few, I'm sure, but not very many. And there certainly can't be many people who prefer Aladdin.

I do agree with Chocolat, however. That is perhaps the single most baffling Best Picture nominee of the past 20 years. There have even been a few that I've liked less, but that's the one that really makes me wonder how the hell it managed to get nominated. Also, 1990 was a pretty weak year in general, so it's not surprising that the Best Picture lineup wasn't very good.

Hooray for Catherine! About time she got more recognition stateside. Honorary Academy Award. Just saying.

Besides, I think it can be safely said that Airport being a Best Picture nominee seems far more baffling in retrospect than ANY of the choices made in that article. Not to mention Doctor Dolittle, which I think would probably win a poll for worst Best Picture nominee of all time.
