Finally, Warner Bros still wants to reboot the once very lucrative Tarzan franchise... and David Yates (who directed the last half of the Harry Potter franchise) is their man for the job. I'd caution them that maybe today's moviegoers don't care about Tarzan. I know personally that everytime I try to generate interest in Tarzan (I have a soft spot for those movies) comments seem to vanish. The last time anybody got seriously excited about Tarzan, in my recollection, was Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan Lord of the Apes -- the only "prestige" Tarzan to date -- and that was nearly 30 years ago. Sure the Disney version in 1999 was a hit but it also was the fumes at the tail end of Disney's second Golden Age and Disney animated features have never been quite the same afterwards. They're already talking about name actors but if you ask me they'd be crazy not to go with an unknown. Tarzan the character is, by nature, a discovery.

@Nathaniel: going off the Awards Circuit article, what did you think of Naomi Watts in "The Impossible"? I really loved her "Mulholland Dr." but I know that you weren't so keen on her in "21 Grams" or any of her work after 2001, so I'm curious to know if she's her same typical self in this role or does she deliver

Yes! She was quite a discovery. Magic Mike had two very strong female characters. Didn't expect that. Munn is also great in Sorkin's The Newsroom.

Ryan Gosling as Tarzan, obviously

By the way, Broadway seems to be in a loop. The Heiress, Cat, Virginia Woolf? I love revivals, but there arer more plays out there. Londoners get more variety.

November 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

peggysue - well they get more variety AND deserve it since they go to the theater more often.

BVR -- i discussed Naomi on the podcast. I think she's good in The Impossible but there's not much by way of an arc or even that much of an acting challenge really. It's kind of a simple role... albeit physically challenging and intense

cal: If they do decide they have to go with a name actor, it should be someone who you'd never, ever, ever, not in a million years, think of as a serious Tarzan. If you're going "Name Actor", Gosling is WAY too easy. Michael Cera, at least, would be something of a surprise.

November 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

I'd go with one of the Hemsworth brothers or Pettyfer for Tarzan if... I cared about a new version. BTW, whatever happened to Taylor Lautner's career?

November 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteriggy

Iggy - Abduction happened.

November 8, 2012 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

That loincloth would slip right off Cera's bony hips.

Isn't Jessica Chastain way too beautiful and young to play Catherine Sloper???

November 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

iggy: And what's GOING to happen to Taylor "Fursplosion" Lautner's career is probably even worse. He's currently attached to Grown Ups 2 and Tracers, a "Premium Rush with Parkour" movie. Pattinson and Stewart, meanwhile, are doing everything to help critics forget they were in Twilight. Three of Pattinson's next four movies are helmed by James Marsh, David Michod and Werner Herzog. As for Kristen Stewart, she's in On the Road right now, and, aside from SW&tH 2 rumors, she's ALSO rumored to be in for the next script by Requa and Ficara.

brookesboy: That was my point. Nat's point is that the whole idea of Tarzan on a story concept level is one of "discovery", so, for me, that means either one of two things to sell it to the audience: 1. An unknown who physically looks the part or 2. The totally out of nowhere Name Actor. Toss out people you would NEVER buy as a serious Tarzan based on their current filmography.

November 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

brookesboy: As to your point about Chastain, remember that it's not a film she's performing in. The age range of a performer in theatre is MUCH larger than the age range of a performer in a film. I certainly wouldn't think Jessica Chastain would be at all convincing in a second FILM of The Heiress, but it's conceivable on stage.

November 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Volvagia, your point about actors in the theater is well-taken. Regarding Lord of the Apes, the decision to pick unknowns for the movies hasn't really worked out all that well, so probably our No. 2 approach is best. After all, Christopher Lambert had only a slightly better career than Miles O'Keefe, but Miles had the bigger disadvantage of being upstaged by Ms. Derek's bo's.

November 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Oh yeah, it's not much of an acting challenge and is kind of a simple role unless it's played by someone like Kidman, Winslet, Portman or Lawrence.....then it's a totally different thing. Even the bunch of bottom-feeders at The Golden Globes and the Guru say that.

November 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterchumsley

There are any number of young actors who could fill Tarzan's loincloth nicely- or they could get an unknown.
