FYC Film Bitch Awards

It's that time of year. I've starting to draw up my lists of the Best This and Best That in every category... so many categories! The Nomination Party begins on December 28th and runs through January 23rd. As per usual, I'd love to hear your input on categories that are harder to winnow down and easier to mess up on by forgetting something totally brilliant. Last year I had some issues completing things but I am happy to report that I'm not quite as terribly behind schedule this year. So hit your FYCs in the comments for the following categories:

Best Line Delivery | Action Sequence | Sex Scene |  Musical Moment | Best Kiss |  Credit Sequence | Opening Scene | Best Actor or Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role | Best Scene in General

Best Actress Film Bitch Long List: Knightley, Hunt, Wallis, Chastain, Riva, Cotillard, Weisz, Corinealdi, Fanning, Dowd, Seydoux, Lynskey, Winstead, Streep. or Williams?

You do that whilst I continue to debate the acting categories with myself... It's so crazy hard to narrow down Best Actress every year! Can I have 15 nominees just so all of these bright actresses get their due?

If you resurrect best poster, Moonrise Kingdom needs to be a contender...

I‘m saddened by the omission of Valérie Donzelli on your best actress long list.

Musical Moment: Declaration of War

Best Actor or Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role:

Zhou Xun as Yoona~939, Cloud Atlas

Best Scene in General:

Stéphanie's reunion with the whale after, Rust and Bone

December 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjoy

Shirley mothereffin' Henderson in Anna Karenina for Best Actor or Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role.

That amazing fight between Carano & Fassbender in Haywire for Action Sequence.

The nail-biting, showstopping abortion/c-section set piece in Prometheus for Best Scene in General.

More to come if I think of any others that haven't been mentioned. I mean, these above have been too but I wanted to highlight them especially. ;)

Will have to think about the rest of the categories, but off the top of my head I'd suggest my votes for:

Best Scene: the tube scene in 'The deep blue sea' (the first one, when they sing Molly Malone quietly during the bombing), such beauty!

Best Sex Scene: the one towards the end of 'Take this waltz', in the loft. So complex, realistic and well executed.

Will try to post again if I manage to come up with good entries for the rest of the categories.

In the meantime, since I seldom post, just want to say congrats/thanks for all your amazing work with the blog this year Nathaniel! :) Not only did you continue to delight us by blogging away your thoughts, lists and critiques as usual, but you also managed to give us that awesome interview with la Kidman and then, surprise us with a little exert to make our cyber-Xmas (you know us so well! haha)

FYC

Sex Scene:
The Deep Blue Sea <3

Best Performance in a Limited or Cameo Role:
Kirsten Dunst, On the Road
James Gandolfini, Killing Them Softly

p.s. Pleeeeease let Weisz make the official line-up; how can you resist the melodramatic desperation of unrequited love?! She was exquisite.

Line reading: "OVER MY DEAD BODY" ---Kiki at the dress shop in Bachelorette

Best scene: Floating brothel in Beasts

Best action sequence: The shipwreck in Life Of Pi or the second storm where God doesn't answer

December 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTB

Forgot the magical musical moments from Deep Blue Sea! Singing Molly Malone in the subway and Tom Hiddleston serenading an awestruck Rachel Weisz in flashback.

Best Scene in General: I just have one, the cesarean scene in Prometheus. Talk about one of the most effective scenes in cinema this year. Oh and well while we're at it, the opening scene too, so beautiful and so strange, posed a lot of questions that weren't answered. Just like the movie.

December 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpaco

Wow. Genuinely surprised to not see Kirsten Dunst in your top 15 for best actress in BACHELORETTE. She's currently in my top five! Also, a shame you didn't get to the fabulous Russian film, ELENA. Nadezhda Markina is so very, very good.

Best Line Delivery
"I'm the motherfucker that found this place" from ZD30
Anything Catherine O'Hara is "Weird Girl" says in FRANKENWEENIE

Action Sequence:
Thor vs Iron Man was the only action scene of THE AVENGERS that I thought was superb.

Musical Moment
Ignoring LES MIS (I like the movie, but you don't need reminding) there's "Who Were We" as well as the accordion intermission from HOLY MOTORS, "Video Killed the Radio Star" from TAKE THIS WALTZ, the "Push It" wedding dance from END OF WATCH, the bomb shelter scene from THE DEEP BLUE SEA, "Cause" from SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN.

Credit Sequence
I seem to remember CABIN IN THE WOODS having a good one? I'm not sure, I don't recall anything. OH! PARANORMAN?

Opening scene:
NEIGHBORING SOUNDS, PARANORMAN, the heist of KILLING THEM SOFTLY, BACHELORETTE...

Best Actor or Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role
Definitely Christopher Evan Welch from THE MASTER (he's the "cult?" guy)
Max Casella and Trevor Long from KILLING THEM SOFTLY

Jeanne Disson from HOLY MOTORS
Melanie Lynskie in PERKS/WALLFLOWER
Linara Washington in KILLING THEM SOFTLY
The actress who hosts the party in THE MASTER

Best Scene in General:
The abortion in PROMETHEUS, "Video Killed the Radio Star" in TAKE THIS WALTZ, the heist of KILLING THEM SOFTLY, the IMAX cityscapes of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, The giallo nightmare in BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO,

Best Line Delivery:

“Can you touch this? Nah nah nah nah…” Dallas (Matthew McConaughey) giving the crowd the rules at the start of Magic Mike.
“It’s gone.” Bond (Daniel Craig) confirming the hard drive has been stolen in Skyfall.
“Agent down.” Eve’s (Naomie Harris) voice coming through the intercom in Skyfall.

Action Sequence:

The Kid with a Bike: Cyril (Thomas Doret) riding home from his father’s on his bike. It’s not action in the sense of a chase or a fight, but it’s a great, fluid tracking shot lasting over a minute as Cyril rides along, heartbroken but knowing who his true family is.
Skyfall: The train chase at the start. It’s ludicrous and yet logical – in the best tradition of Bond – and it builds to a stunning payoff (see Eve’s line reading above) and then slips into those great credits (see below).

Sex Scene:

North Sea Texas: The boys in the tent. Sweet and romantic.

Musical Moment:

Magic Mike: The dance montage sequence that ends with one of the dancers putting his back out onstage. The sequence goes so well with the song (which I can’t identify yet!).
Searching for Sugar Man: Any of the lengthy plays of Rodriguez's songs.
To Rome With Love: Any time Woody Allen uses the bouncy ‘Amada Mia, Amore Mio’ on the soundtrack (and he uses it a lot!).

Best Kiss:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Charlie and Sam. Two loveable characters, two lovely performances.

Credit Sequence:

Les Intouchables (opening credits)
Prometheus (opening credits)
Skyfall (opening credits)

Opening Scene:

Magic Mike: Mike getting up from bed after a threesome. A great scene-setter.
Once Upon a Time in Anatolia: The middle of the night, and cars are coming down a country road in the distance. Intimate and epic at the same time.
Skyfall: Bond coming into focus as he walks towards us down that corridor in Istanbul. The film almost screams Bond Is Back!

Best Actor or Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role:

Bérénice Lim Marlohe as Sévérine in Skyfall: She was terrific, and I would consider her role to be limited because of the callous way with which she exits the movie and because her brief performance left me wanting so much more.
Olivia Munn as Joanna in Magic Mike: She was so good in her few brief scenes – but maybe she should count as Supporting Actress instead? (After all, she’s probably in Magic Mike more than Beatrice Straight is in Network!)
Jérémie Renier as Guy in The Kid with a Bike: He only makes two short appearances, but his performance resonates throughout the film as the father who has abandoned Cyril.

Best Scene in General:

Prometheus: The abortion scene. I have mixed feelings about it (as I do about the film itself), but I can’t forget how jaw-dropping it is in both conception and execution.
Searching for Sugar Man: The moment when Rodriguez comes out on stage at the comeback concert.
Skyfall: Bond entering the room at the start of the film – a dead body on the floor, Ronson bleeding in the chair, the hard drive gone…

A thought for Best Actress: Judi Dench in Skyfall. I think it's a leading role this time.

December 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEdward L.

Credits: ParaNorman
Opening sequence: Argo, Ted
Action scene: the tsunami in "The Impossible"

Hope it's not too late to write this. I saw this post when it was freshly published but I was reading it through my mobile while I was outdoor so I thought of leaving the comment when I was back home. But then I totally forgot about it.

Although I was not at all a big die hard Nolan fan or his Batman franchise fan, I would still suggest 2 awards for Anne in it:

Best Line Delivery: The "A storm is coming something something how do you live so large and leave so little to others" scene. You see, I don't even remember the whole line but I remember Anne's sexy voice of whispers and how it sets the tone of the trailer and the movie.

Best scene in general: I'm not even sure this is eligible as "scene in general" but that one look on Anne's face when JGL captured her, interrogated her and told her he can protect her. That rolling of eye is precious, and through this single one scene alone she's worthy of any award.

Already commented on this and it's about a week old at this point, but I just saw Perks Of Being A Wallflower and have to echo the other commenters here on Best Kiss (Charlie's first kiss), Best Musical Moment (Come On Eileen), and Best Actress In A Cameo (Melanie Lynskey). Hoping the trio gets some love in the big awards too!

Plus I wanted to put in a good word for Silver Linings Playbook. Even if it wasn't a favorite on this site, that ballroom dance scene is spectacularly fun to watch.

Also where would James Spader fall for Lincoln? Is he supporting or cameo? He'd be in my limited role/cameo nominations for sure.
