Does it matter? I remember when Oscar night was a school night and the only wins I saw were in the Supporting categories.

Is AMPAS ready? Nathaniel, what do you think of the voting concerns(re online voting; check out the Hollywood Reporter for more details). Could have fascinating implications. OR it could mean nothing

It's too soon! By rushing the nominations I think the dark horses stand less of a chance. A longer process allows voters to see a movie like "Deep Blue Sea" or some other little-seen gem. Emmanuelle Riva would probably be helped by a longer nominating period too.
Still haven't seen Amour, Rust and Bone, Django Unchained, Flight, Compliance.... No, I'm Not Ready! ;)

I feel there will a surprise nominee in the Best Supporting Actress category... and I don't know who might be the lucky one (will we have a Maggie Gyllenhaal this year?)
Yes, I'm ready. And I'm glad the nominations have been moved up as it seems that more films have gotten wider release earlier. If Academy voters haven't seen The Deep Blue Sea yet, the nominations calendar is certainly not to blame -- the film has been on DVD since July! If Amour fails to get nominations, it's the distributor's fault for gambling with the wide release date. I don't have a lot of sympathy for the whole qualifying release strategy. And furthermore, aside from best picture, the branches are voting on a fairly narrow set of films for their specific category -- they certainly know the 10-15 films (or fewer) that are in serious consideration. I suppose the actors have the most to watch. If they haven't been catching the films as they've been released or seen them at festivals, with a little bit of catchup at the holidays with the screeners that have been mailed to them...perhaps they shouldn't get a ballot. Yeah, no sympathy there either. I've seen most of the contenders without screeners and I don't live in NY or LA.
Do you think Spike Lee's negativity towards Django Unchained will hurt it's nomination chances?

Eddie-Probably not because nobody listens to Spike Lee anymore. He whines too much, even if it is justified most times.
Dang, where did this year go? Time is flying! This might be another year where I see the most Best Actress nominee movies ever. Hurray for good movies starring women, lets keep it up!
If that's a wall of crappy nomination-infested waters coming upon us, then no, I'm not ready for Jan. 10. (Please let there be some surprises, omissions and otherwise.)
@Raul - With all due respect, The Deep Blue Sea was released last *March* so...if AMPAS voters haven't gotten around to it nearly 10 months later, I have neither sympathy for them nor faith that seeking out any "little-seen gem" is much of a priority to them.
Eddie -- i think the biggest blow to Django Unchained from an oscar perspective is that the Academy is not (SURPRISE!) composed of a bunch of young online movie maniacs. Tarantino is so much more of a web god than an Academy god that I have to wonder if the hype for its nomination chances isn't a bit inflated.
Nathaniel, I know this is off topic, but since it is the end of the year, when will you be releasing your list of the Top LGBTQ Characters of 2012? I always enjoy your list =)

I'm getting my hopes up that Gretta Gerwig will be performing The Sambola! on the Oscar telecast. I mean, I know Damsels in Distress is a long shot in any category, but that is a fun song. It would be a great moment during the telecast.

As every year I'm definitely not ready, especially because of the f*ucking German release dates... So many films I'm yet to see. But at least there's still time until the actual ceremony is on.
All I'd really like is for Helen Mirren to not hog a spot in Best Actress just because she's Helen Mirren when there are so many deserving contenders this year that actually have traction.
I'm excited though! Can't wait. Praying for a few [pleasant] surprises and such.
This year it would be so easy for them to get it right... fingers crossed...
Ooh Nathaniel...you know I love you and your blog, and I know you always have good intentions, but I'm gonna be honest with you....I just don't think using that photo for this post was the best choice to herald the forthcoming Oscar noms...the tsunami was a horrifying event...it's not something to be taken so lightly, as it is here.

Just listening to Anna kendrick on the Pitch Perfect soundtrack and realized...we don't know which female Oscarish star is helping to announce the nominees, do we? Any guesses? Seems that it has to be someone who isn't in contention this year...Kendrick, Theron? Winslet-Rocknroll?
mickey67 - my guess for Oscar nom presenter based on last couple of years is either Octavia Spencer or Rooney Mara.
Oscar could sure use some surprises - I like to see Matthew McConaughey in supporting over Alan Arkin or Ewan McGregor get a nomination somehow.
Just for fun - how about best costume design nomination for Magic Mike?
