JA from MNPP here - having had their way with the Snow White story (to great financial success one time, and notsomuch the other), Hollywood is setting its sights upon her downtrodden floor-scrubbing slash mouse-touching sister-princess next - Cinderella is going to be turned into a live-action whirylgig by the director Mark Romanek, from a script by Chris Weitz.

I'm a big fan of Romanek's (I am not one of the poor unfortunate souls who found Never Let Me Go anything less than terribly impressive, but I've loved him way back to his videos for Nine Inch nails) and while I'd rather he not get sucked back into the big Hollywood machinery again (trying to make a movie out of Wolf Man wasted several years of possible output from him)... well, I can't say no to the cast that's circling this thing, now can I? Cate Blanchett is talks to play the Wicked Stepmother, while there are three girls mentioned by Variety as being up for the role of the glass-slipper gal, including Saoirsie Ronan - Hanna reunion!

Hanna was basically a fairy tale itself - Red Riding Hood with head-shots. So much that I can't help but fill out Cinderella's cast with all of Hanna's featured players. Eric Bana as the King! (As long as this King goes swimming in his long-johns too, of course.) Olivia Williams as the Fairy Godmother! Michelle Dockery and Jessica Barden as the Evil Stepsisters! Tom Hollander and his co-thugs as the mice! Okay this really needs to happen, I have convinced myself.

How is it that someone I used to love as much as Cate Blanchett can be so boring now?

I'm imagining her Wicked Stepmother and know exactly what we're going to get—thunder-bellowing, maybe some shivery Elizabethan rage, some slaparound histrionics a la Notes on a Scandal. Some costumes. Attempts at chilliness that fall short of what real icy blondes like Michelle and Nicole are capable of at their best. That part would need someone sharp like a diamond, not blunt and porous like a pumice stone.

Dare I say that role probably sounds more fun to play than it would ever turn out on the screen? 'Cause no one could pull it off satisfactorily. Same boat: I love Rachel Weisz but I truly don't care how she does as a wicked Oz witch. And Charlize Theron was sexy, but the first trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman gave us all we needed to see. Don't even get me started on Maleficent...

Or even Carrie's mother, for that matter—and I don't make a habit of speaking ill of Julianne Moore. What's with touching all the genre divas of a certain age? Are these middle aged actresses just dying to live out their fantasies in the roles they're finally old enough to play? STOP IT. STOP IT RIGHT NOW.

I kind of agree with you Hayden W, Cate can do this part in her sleep, and she has already played this part (very well!) in Hanna, Ronan too has done this before in the same film, i don't see what the point of it is except you can tell they admire each other. But i would n't necessarily call her boring, we have the Allen film, may have the 2 Malicks, Carol and the Clooney film, and she's brilliant on stage, she'll be in The Maids with Huppert. In these Cinderella reports though they say she is 'in talks' so lets hope she bails!

Chloe Sevigny as the Queen! Putting in my two cents now. I'd pay to see that.

Would Katie Jarvis as one of the evil step sisters be a good suggestion? Because, yeah, she needs to be in something! Anything!!! Fish Tank was filmed almost FOUR AND A HALF YEARS AGO, for crying out loud.

Hayden, if you're actually a follower of Blanchett's career you would know that she's strongly director-driven.

If I were an actor I would kill to work with Romanek in whatever role.

And John said what I was going to say. Her projects in post-production sound great and are under the auspices of great directors.

oh, and Marissa Wiegler and Galadriel were definitely sharp enough for me.

Hey Mark i was gonna suggest WInslet too, especially since she has n't really done any 'genre' work before, well since Titanic at least.

Just think she needs to shake her career up and do a horror piece.
