Channing Tatum Wins

You always win when you a) look this good and b) have this much of a sense of humor about yourself and c) are willing to shuck off your lame franchise* to work with Steven Soderbergh on your semi-biographical male stripper movie**.

P.S. I don't actually ever catch Saturday Night Live. Were there skits worth seeing this time?

P.P.S. * To be fair to G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation, it does seem like it might have a sense of humor about its own ridiculousness, which the first film was sorely lacking.

P.P.P.S. ** 144 days until Magic Mike loses his pants for moviegoers everywhere.

The skits were not good, Nat. The only thing Tatum did convincingly was dance and be comfortable in various states of undress (he did both in almost every skit). The writers room seemed to recognize his limitations and wrote around them. Which seems to be what Hollywood has been doing for his whole career. This bodes well for "Magic Mike", but less so for Tatum's other 50 projects coming out this year. For the life of me, I can't understand why Soderbergh is so enamored with this guy. He's only a small step above Taylor Lautner from what I've seen.

The skits were terrible, but Tatum has charisma, which Taylor Lautner couldn't even dream about (and Channing is, imo, way, way cuter). I think that Magic Mike will be the make-or-break film of his career. If Soderbergh can truly work his movie magic, it could be awesome and open a new chapter in his career. Otherwise, he's got as long as those abs last.

I loved the Lana Del Rey skit (which I caught on youtube) and Channing Tatum YES PLEASE!

Drew B -- you have to be kidding right? Tatum has been good in several things, if somewhat limited. Taylor CANNOT act. I've rarely seen such an inept actor get so famous. He's one for the history books, for sure (but not in a good way)

JohnT: Magic Mike is his Showgirls--and he'll still continue to work after it.

Nat: What has Tatum been good in? Maybe I'm not watching the right movies. Wooden in Dear John, outshone in The Eagle, Stop Loss and Recognizing Your Saints(by Shia! among others), not funny when he needed to be in The Dilemma, can't remember him in G.I. Joe. Truth, he's not as god awful as Lautner (hence the step up comment, maybe more medium than small), but he has a similar blank slate with little range feel, and Tatum has the benefit of more experience. It's just surprising that he's so frequently given a free pass from you (and Hollywood casting agents). Feels like you would be a bit harsher on young starlets with similar (if not better) resumes. Is that body really blinding so many people to his shortcomings (talent wise). Those abs are nice though.

That was cute but... do people really believe Channing is not.. you know.. not pretty at. all?? That face is not what we would ideal. Far from it. Faaaaaar.

Yes the guy is hot but... I actually doubt he can act, for real I mean. Besides, every time I hear about Magic Mike I laugh because the concept just seems ridiculous.

There was the Newt Gingrich (sp?) Moon President sketch but nothing in this episode is going to end up on their year-best.

Anyway, Channing Tatum was the fourth greatest thing in Haywire and I'm including Soderbergh, Lem Domms and Carano on the first three. I'll still laugh at his lines in the first scenes by December. And I guess in general I do side with model-actors because a substantial amount of the population think they're stupid and can't act. The worst is Cindy Crawford and the best is Jane Fonda, Tatum being in the middle of that spectrum.

By the way, I meant hot as in the body, no the face. And yes, I do think he's not very talented. But yes, next to Taylor Lautner he might much better. That's another guy I cannot get, he's horrible (both body and face).

James -- i can't make heads or tails of what you're trying to say. maybe there are double negatives? i'm confused.

February 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

Nathaniel - Yeah, that was not phrased well - but, indeed, it was a double negative. I meant to say "do people really believe he is not totally unattractive?".

And then, of course, "That face is not what we would call ideal."

But that was too much of me being negative on someone I like.

So, let's end this differently: Rooney Mara is annoying! ;)

Channing Tatum makes me wish clothes were never invented.

James his face changes depending on the angle. He can be really handsome or a little bit of.

@ DrewB "For the life of me, I can't understand why Soderbergh is so enamored with this guy. He's only a small step above Taylor Lautner from what I've seen."

Keep in mind this is the guy that tried to make the anal queen of porn a movie star. I'll never understand Soderbergh's thought process.

February 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterK

Nathaniel is right; Channing Tatum may not be the best actor in the world, but Taylor Lautner is NOT BELIEVABLE AS A HUMAN BEING onscreen. Seriously. It's the difference between an actor on a CW show and Mariah Carey in Glitter.

They're both equally HOT though.
