Podcast: Spread the Wealth, End the War
I couldn't let the postmortem on Oscar's 84th close without inviting my ol' podcast pals Katey, Nick and Joe to join me for one last conversation of the season. We ended up talking for over an hour. See we all share this "can't stop talking Oscar!" addiction and none of us will ever go to rehab. So you get the podcast in two parts. Part two late tonight.
Here's part one where we start goofy with Octavia Spencer's ubiquity and end all serious like (well, mostly) with Viola and Meryl. Join the conversation in the comments.
Topics include but are not limited to...
- Octavia Spencer, Angelina Jolie
- "Cut To Camera 3. No, Camera 4. Wait, Back to 2!"
- Spreading the Wealth. What Did They Actually Love?
- Billy Crystal's 9th Go-Round
- Emma Stone vs. Anne Hathaway with a side of Jonah Hill
- Red Carpet Reveals and Lead Actor Presentations
- CLIPS! Commercial Breaks
- Meryl & Viola and the Narrative vs. Performance Problem
You can download the podcast on iTunes or listen right here at the bottom of the post.
UPDATE: PART TWO NOW AVAILABLE AS WELL.

Although there was a lot of talk about the membership of the Academy being old white males, I think it's a mistake to think that some of the most adventurous and thoughtful voters aren't in this crowd. Remember that in their heyday, women had big juicy roles, they weren't just making the best of the not-so-great role they got. Remember Nathaniel's series about past Oscar Best Actress nominees? One standout thing was how good the ROLES used to be.
I would guess that the unadventurous voters (at least in the women's acting categories) are the young male members of the Academy. They don't make movies with women, they scorn movies with women leads as substandard, and they vote either for the young and hot, or the most conservative choice, because they don't care. They haven't seen many movies with women leads in them, because that bores them.
That may also be an incorrect guess, but I don't think we can assume that a varied group of artists, with years of experience and struggle, can be reduced to all looking like one conservative knee-jerk old fart.
adri -- well said. People should never be reduced entirely to demographics.
@Nick Davis - if I'm the Janice you're referring to, I'm surprised and honored by the mention. (If it's another Janice - then don't mind me.)
3rtful, about the Katharine Hepburn subject:
The guy was listing the women who won AT LEAST two Best Actress awards. Do you know the meaning of this expression, "AT LEAST"?? It means you list the ones who have 2 or more.
