Pitt is so good at listening in "Moneyball". I've always heard that is the hardest thing when you're acting. Anyway, he has always been very Redford. I think he will end up directing and winning for a well-balanced drama.

As for hottest guy in room, yes Tate Taylor's hotness was a discovery this season. But the hottest guy has to be Jean Dujardin - that smile, those moves, that charm, the continuos joy . HOT.

I thought that Octavia Spencer was talking about the Oscar statuette when she said she was next to the hottest guy in the room. Wish her speech was better, but she was overwhelmed.

What I love in this award season is the comeback of the queens of the '80! I mean OK, streep is always there, but What a joy to see Glenn Close nominated again for Albert Nobbs (and Damages), jessica Lange winning for a tour de force performance in American Horror Story and Sissy Spacek being a part in the award winning ensemble of The Help!

The joy would be perfect if Pfeiffer would be around .... but no! this year she chose New Year's Eve :(

You guys talk about Brad Pitt's prospects. I believe he could get recognition for Steve McQueen's Twelve Years a Slave. It's supposed to come out in 2013, co-starriing Fassbender. However, the real protagonist will be Chiwetel Ejiofor, playing a free black man the 1850s who is sold back into slavery. I haven't been able to establish who Pitt and Fassbender will play, but there's the role of the evil plantation owner. Who knows. Pitt is part of the production team. Maybe he will reserve something juicy for himself... Best Supporting Actor?
I've only seen short clips. Not even the youtube channel oscars has the winners with the presentations by Firth and Portman, but I loved the applause of the audience when Plummer mentioned McGregor in his speech. I don't think he's ever going to win an Oscar, mainly because of his choices, but he's getting some momentum after The Ghost Writer and Beginners back to back.
I hope the nominee from this year that will be there soon, will be Viola Davis. I'm not optimistic about it, but if she manages to get a meaty part this year, she'll be next year's Colin Firth (Single Man - The King's Speech). If it doesn't happen this year nor next. I'm afraid she'll lose the momentum and she'll go back to thankless supporting roles (Eat, Pray, Love was already after her first nomination!) or to TV. I still find it unbelievable that from the same movie, Spencer has an Oscar and Davis hasn't. It's some sort of bad joke.
Anyway, I was going to say something else, but I forgot. Next year.
PS. I think you should consider a star-studded podcast with all the contributors + the usual suspects to wrap up the awards season. Just like in New Year's Eve, but good.
I'm pretty sure Octavia was talking about the Oscar when she said "thanks to the Academy for putting me with the hottest guy in the room" because she looked at the Oscar when she said that, and she would've been with Tate Taylor with or without the Oscars (I mean it's not like he was nominated). I thought it was obvious when I saw it? I don't know why people are confused, lol.
Philip -- totally. that's what she meant/. We just thought it was funny that peopple were interpreting it differently.

I agree, I thought this would be Pitt's year after the New York Film Critics Award. I really thought he would pick up steam, but the Globes really halted that and then the SAGs.
I enjoyed these two podcasts so much I listened to the first half of the first one repeatedly. Actually for some reason the slider bar never showed up on my iTunes, but I didn't care, I just enjoyed listening to the conversation so much I didn't mind. What a joy to hear, especially after all the high drama of this season.
This may be my favorite podcast that the four of you have ever done - light, graceful, flowed beautifully, esp pt 1 - but also I could HEAR everyone clearly. What a difference that makes.
Nick...where are you going to rank Meryl on your "Ranking the WInners" page? (I'm obsessed with that page, as well as your Side by Side by Side...I always refer to them). Is she a Fantastic, Fetching, Fair or Feh...my guess is Fetching...although I think she is a Fantastic.
I saw Iron Lady for the first time yesterday...wow! Why didn't the Academy (or any other televised awards org for that matter) feature her monologue in the doctor's office, or her demented, emasculating tirade in the conference room, as her awards clip? Such great moments...seriously, The Iron Lady is a culmination of the best elements from her last three lead nominations. As much as I love Viola, Meryl was a worthy winner.
And I'm really optimistic about Viola's future...she will have her moment.
SoSueMe: I am also very optimistic about Viola's future career and Oscar record. She has already broken the jinx of Africanamerican actresses. Only Whoopi Goldberg has ever received two nominations, and that was 20 years ago! ALL the others have received only one (Hattie McDaniel, Dorothy Dandrige, Cicely Tyson, Alfre Woodard, Angela Bassett, etc.) That's why I think Viola stands a good chance of continuing to attract good roles and Oscar love!
What's more. Oscar has paid close attention to black actresses in recent years: Hudson, Sidibe, Davis, Spencer, Mo'Nique, Henson, Ruby Dee. I feel confident that this trend will continue and will improve Davis' chances.
Viola can win Supporting Actress anytime after this loss. The hurt is behind being women of color are shut out of Best Actress. Penelope Cruz can get a nomination there but her win and subsequent nominations will be Supporting Actress only, unless Alomodovar builds another movie around her.
