I'm gonna cheat. The 2012 foreign movie I'm most looking forward to is Michael Haneke's Amour because it has Isabelle Huppert in it.

AND the 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is The Master from Paul Thomas Anderson (yay, Laura Dern!)

"The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is Gravity because out of the big releases this is the one I've seen the least of, and I'm curious to see how it will turn out ."

"The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is The Dark Knight Rises because it's the end of a real trilogy."

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercaro

The 2012 release I'm most looking forward to is Django Unchained because whether it's a disaster or a masterpiece it is finally going to earn Tarantino that exaggerated 'controversial' tag he's been wearing since the early 90s.

Also Sam Jackson and Christoph Waltz trading Tarantino lines and DiCapro taking a major risk

Like Lars, I'm gonna cheat:

"The 2012 movies I'm most looking forward to are The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit because one could be the first great third comic book film in a trilogy and the other could be a great prequel - also a first - to one of my favorite set of movies ."

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is Gravity because Alfonso Cuaron made Children of Men which may be the best film made in my lifetime.

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

Les Miserables because finally Anne Hathaway gets to sing - and "I Dreamed a Dream" no less. Hugh is just icing on the cake.

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMurtada

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is The Hunger Games* because I'm impatient and this is the film coming out the earliest.

*No, this isn't actually the film I'm looking forward to the most of course. But I am getting awfully excited to see the book translated to film. There's just way too many films I'm anticipating this year. Very difficult to choose. Hobbit, Avengers, Anna Karenina, Dark Knight Rises, Lincoln, Skyfall, The Gangster Squad, Amazing Spider-Man, etc.

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is Django Unchained because it'll be the most controversial mainstream film of the year.

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is 'Gravity' because Alfonso Cuaron is one of the most exciting director's around and has been gone for nearly six years now...I mean come on Alfonso! Don't leave us for so long. Entire Transformers franchises have been thrown up on society since you last made something.

The 2012 movie I"m looking forward to the most is MOONRISE KINGDOM, because Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors in the world, because the trailer suggests something really charming and special, and because this makes the second year in a row that one of my favorite directors is releasing a movie by Memorial Day weekend (thanks for starting that trend, Malick)!

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRoark

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is 'Nero Fiddles' because Woody Allen hardly ever disappoints me, and because the cast list - Penélope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Alec Baldwin, Judy Davis, Ornella Muti and holdover Allison Pill (who was one of my very favorite things in 'Midnight in Paris) - is intriguing as usual (well, I could do without Benigni, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt).

"The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is The Grandmasters because Leung-WKW is the best muse-director combination or our time ."

"The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is 'Dark Shadows' because the combination of Tim Burton, Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp makes me giddy."

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is The 47 Ronin, because it is one of the quintessential Japanese stories, because I've seen the Seven Samurai seven times, and because, yes, yes I do, I like Keanu Reeves.

The 2012 movies I'm most looking forward to are Stoker and The paperboy because NICOLE KIDMAN BACK IN FORM!!!

(What do you think of her just announced choices Nate: Before I Go to Sleep, and the Railyway Man?)

Also ANNA KARENINA!

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLeigh

I didn't actually realize how many movies I'm excited about this year until I read this thread.

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

There's so many! It's looking to be a really good year (fingers crossed). But if I had to choose just one.... the 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is 7 Psychopaths because it's an In Bruges reunion with added Rockwell, Sidibe, Harrelson, Cornish and Walken.

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSVG

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is 'The Hobbit' because...why wouldn't I be excited?

The movie I'm looking most forward to in 2012 is Django Unchained because DUH.

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeau

Funny that Lars named the two films I was debating between in the very first post. Instead, I'll add: A Late Quartet, the cast.

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is THE MASTER because it is PT ANDERSON'S."

Just to be different... The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is Ang Lee's LIFE OF PI. I love the book and I hope Lee is in great form here.

In second place... Well, I second the Haneke vote. AMOUR with Huppert seems just about right.

My third choice is the Portuguese should-have-been Berlinale winner, Miguel Gomes' TABU. Very curious about that one.

P.S. - I hope SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS is as epic and amazing as it should (and deserves) to be.

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJorge Rodrigues

We should play a game: Guess which mediocre movie will become an awards darling and steal away the spotlight from better movies? (i.e. The Descendants)

lol

March 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is Anna Karenina because I am fully on the Joe Wright bandwagon, having called Hanna "the best bad movie of 2011" because of his direction and being optimistic that by teaming up with Keira Knightley again he can channel some of the magic of his Pride & Prejudice (one of my favorites).

March 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is The Avengers because I'm a geek.

March 7, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermiguel

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Life of Pi. Awesome book, and a perfect fit for Ang Lee. The protagonist, interested in biology and theology, is perfect for another version of Lee's movies' dualities: Tiger and Dragon, Lust and Caution, Banner and Hulk, Ennis and Jack, Sense and Sensibility. i'm gonna love this movie.

March 7, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

The Dark Knight Rises because it might very well be the first good/great ending to a superhero trilogy (finally!).

Also, Django Unchained. By the way, could somebody enlighten me (without spoiling anything...I'm assuming you all read the script) as to what is going to be controversial about it? Obviously there's the whole slavery/revenge plot, but from what I'm reading here ("finally going to earn Tarantino that exaggerated 'controversial' tag he's been wearing since the early 90s") it sounds like more than that.

Prometheus, because who cannot look forward the revisted Alien universe! and coming from Scott himself no less.

Also, Les Miz because we musical lovers are sooooo hungry!

Gravity - because of Sandra Bullock!!

March 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDerek

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is The Hobbit, because it has been my favorite book since I was 8 years old, and as I HATED the cartoon version I have been waiting twenty years for there to be a good film version. Also because every other film I'm looking forward to has unbelievable possiblity to disappoint: Dark Shadows, Gravity, Magic Mike (although admittedly it does NOT look like it will disppoint on the nudity front), Les Miserables, Anna Karenina, The Master, Brave... they all look great but I worry too much about them. The only thing that could disappoint about The Hobbit is where they choose to cut it. But even then, I could care less, I love that story SO MUCH. (Although I will admit, I was more excited about it back when Del Toro was directing.)

The film I am most looking forward to is Untitled Malick because it is likely to be the single film released in 2012 that will stand the test of time as a work of art.

March 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPete

The 2012 movie I'm most looking forward to is 'The Stare' (perhaps now retitled 'The Letter') because it will be Winona Ryder's triumphant return to interesting and meaty leading roles! :)
