Andrew & Tobey & Spidey

VMan magazine had the fine idea of Peter Parker Tobey Maguire grilling Peter Parker Andrew Garfield on donning the Spider-Man duds. Superheroes already know from dual personas so this idea is not just right but it's hey hey. Amusing interview and I thought we should discuss the best bit.

On Andrew's first time seeing Tobey's movie:

AG Very much so. Peter Parker is such a positive character—he's pure wish fulfillment, an underdog. I grew so much from him when I was a kid, from the comics all the way up to the first movie you were in. I was 19 when I saw [Spider-Man]. I got a pirated dvd at portobello Market with my friend Terry Mcguiness, and we went back to my skanky apartment in North London and we watched it twice in a row and then practiced your final line in the mirror!
TM [Laughs]
AG Terry has this thick accent and every time I would recite that line he would laugh this very distinct laugh and say, "No, man, you could never be fucking Spider-Man. You'll never be fucking Spider-Man!" I was so humiliated and upset. But, um...fuck you, Terry!

They also discuss the overnight colossal change in Tobey Maguire's fame after Spider-Man opened -- not unlike how surprised Peter Parker is to wake up with Spider-Man physique.

Andrew reveals that he and Jamie Bell (they're friends) had dinner together the night they both auditioned. Fun Fact! So here's the article (you have to scroll back up to the beginning of each page when you're done reading for the "next" button...  not user friendly)

I'm still not excited for the movie but I'll try for Andrew.

I know it's off-topic, but do you think that Andrew has chances to win the tony award as best featured actor this year?

I do. But I haven't properly investigated that category so perhaps there's a steamroller i'm not aware of coming.

God, those arms. Let's be honest, the minute they cast Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, my ticket was bought.

He didn't blow away or bother me in Social Network, but after watching Garfield Sling Blade in Never Let Me Go, I need at least a couple years' break from him. (Languishing in a superhero franchise almost guarantees that I have a couple years' break from a particular actor. I almost feel like Tobey Maguire disappeared in 2002.)

On the other hand, Emma Stone means I have to watch the damn thing. With great charisma comes great responsibility.

The too old to be an ingenue-ingenue—Jessica Chastain publicly passed on a tent pole superhero sequel to remain ever vigilant to the eyes of the Academy and to the schedules of auteur-s. I love her and none of you can have her.

i think i want to play john-travolta-and-the-masseur with andrew garfield, but i don't think i want to see his spiderman movie. is that wrong?

Garfield is already a three time nominee for me personally (maybe four time). I'm there.

I love Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. I've even seen the new trailers and it looks pretty decent. But like Nathaniel, I'm not really looking forward to it. I never liked it when the news broke that Spider-Man was getting rebooted. I have a feeling that if the movie turns out to be good, I'll like it but I will never love it like the original Spider-Man.

what are your reasons for not being excited? Also, what specific things about Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man 2 (2004) make you love those movies so much?

May 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBVR

also, just FYI, I think Kirsten Dunst is top-notch in the first two Spider Man movies.

Stone and Garfield are a couple now? Is this new?

Garfield should have been nodded for "The Social Network." He was heartbreaking as Tommy in "Never Let Me Go." Good luck to him at the Tonys next month!
