Away. Talk Amongst Yourselves

It's Nathaniel, typing at you in a rush. A family emergency has taken me out of town for a week. More later. In the meantime, what's on your cinematic mind and what do you most hope to experience during this year's summer movie season (both here on the blog and in the movie theaters)?

Any ideas when the remaining cast of August Osage County (to begin filming Sept. 2012) will be announced by the Weinsteins?

I've heard rumors of Dianne Wiest, Mary Louise Parker and Albert Finney...

May 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMark

Hope everything turns out ok.

As far as what I would like to see this summer on TFE... I would love another reader's ranking poll. (I know, I know... it's TON of work for you, but the Streep poll was so much fun). The only hitch I can see is picking another actress :)

@Mark - I hadn't heard that Albert Finney was a possibility for AOC. I would love to see that happen. I've been wondering where he would show up next.

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTravis

Watching L.A. Confidential. Easily one of the greatest films ever made.

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterZach

Hope everything is ok.

Nat I hope everything is going to be all right! Take care.

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

Hope everything will be fine.

I saw the first teaser for Detlev Buck's adaptation of "Measuring the World" the other day. I loved Daniel Kehlmann's novel and I think the teaser looks pretty great, too. Also, it features lots of naked bottoms... ;)

Reading the reviews for Cosmopolis, and although its divisive, I have to say its the head-scratching, what is this?! reviews which are making me even moew excited for it. It sounds like a movie you have to watch more than once. The themes Cronenberg is exploring (money, corporate power) is something I cant wait to see so I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRose

I really enjoyed The Avengers movie, but still don't quite think it's up to the standard of the cartoon that's currently airing. Still, for me, it's the difference between an A (cartoon) and an A- (movie).

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Hope everything's okay. I'm sending positive thoughts your way.
All I have on my cinematic mind is Cannes! I've been obsessively reading Guy Lodge's dispatches and can't wait for the Palme d'or and other awards to be announced. It's like the auteur Oscars (the Osceurs)!
This summer I hope to experience a surprise as joyful as Bridesmaids in theatres and more of the same excellent writing on Filmexperience.

semi-cinematic;
What's up with this Nicole Kidman/Clive Owen/HBO thing? Is it supposed to be good?
Okay, real question: How will this affect Julianne Moore's Emmy chances? Gotta see my girl get an award!

Miss you Nathaniel!

I hope everything turns out, Nathaniel.

Maureen Ryan posted a scathing review of Hemingway and Gellhorn on the Huffington Post a day or two ago. It made it sound like a cliche-filled mess. Ryan is normally a very good critic, but then again, sometimes she produces some head-scratching columns (she also posted a terrible review of the Mad Men Dark Shadows episode, basically because she dislikes Betty, so maybe she's going through a bad phase). So we'll see. I've been really looking forward to this film, as I like Philip Kaufman's work a lot.

I want wellness for you, and everyone attached to you, you care about, and love. My thoughts, and hopes, good energy, sent your way from me.

On my cinematic mind is Nicole Kidman. I hope she experiences an upsurge of high appraisal of her work as an actress. She continues to turn people off—completely unfair prejudice on their part.
A little disappointed the new Melissa McCarthy movie doesn't have her with a mother role for Kathy Bates—Melissa loves her too.
Still attempting to heal from the wounds of this year's best actress race. Letting go of what I can't control. The over appraisal of Meryl Streep—resentment that other American actress will go to their grave Oscarless, under seen, and under appreciated.

"what's on your cinematic mind?"

That you ought to update your Oscar predictions.

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGustavo

@fbh

I have read both positive and average reviews of the Owen/Kidman movie.

@4rtful
you had me fooled... I thought someone else had taken your moniker and was being a nice person... I even wrote back to you a couple of times!!!!

You have to do more than gripe about Streep ... As Cher said in Moonstruck "..GET OVER IT!" ... and wish I were there to slap you!!!!!!

Nat... I am keeping positive energy going for you and yours... Hope all will go well.

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

@rick

I didn't fool you of anything. I'm a nice person. Yet Streep and Moretz get under my skin like a horrible disease. Sorry this is how I feel. I need to start a support group online because I couldn't possibly be the only one!

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter4rtful

4rtful (3rtful alias),

You and your comments get under my skin like a horrible disease as well. You need to see a shrink to deal with your demented hostility towards Streep. Also, prepare yourself for Streep winning a 4th Oscar for August Osage County in 2014.

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermed

@med

You better pray she has a black rival nominee or they'll never bite the bullet again and give it to her.

Hello there,

I have a question: is there any good tv program on American (or English-speaking) television that covers film? And I don't mean something like, just the short interviews with cast, and what film is coming out this weekend, and the usual stuff I can find on youtube. I mean a program with commentary and analysis (maybe in addition to the interviews, etc), something like political commentary, but on film and popular culture (something like the Rachel Maddow show but on films, if you will).

I'm from Italy and I live in Germany, so I hope there's something out there that matches my description and I don't know anything about. ;)

thanks a lot.

has anyone here seen take this waltz? loved the movie. wrote about it here: http://wetalkaboutmovies.wordpress.com/2012/05/27/take-this-waltz/

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVinny

For my part, I just returned home after watching "Snow White and the Huntsman" and I would call is solid entertainment.

With proper campaigning Theron could be in the running for a Supporting Actress nomination.

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

btw, it just occurred to me that if Leo DiCaprio were an actress he would already have 6+ Oscar nominations.

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Nate,

Please consider deleting crazy and demented commentators (4rtful) from your blog.

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermed

Here's hoping that "family emergency" turns into "everything's okay" with all deliberate speed - the prayers will solicit the desired outcome.

Thinking that 2010 has spoiled me...the missus and I saw two films all year that we did not care for. Everything else was anywhere from good to great. 2011 and (so far) 2012 had several cinematic misses. How does that happen?

Also hoping that "Prometheus" is cinematic dynamite that can live up to the expectations I have for it...that would make it the best movie of the summer, if not the year.

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarl

Want to hear the full cast list for August:Osage County!!!

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

ele--

I haven't seen anything on American TV similar to what you're looking for. The most high-profile TV show relating to movies in terms of analysis was undoubtedly Siskel and Ebert, before it went through multiple versions due to the original critics' death and illnesses, respectively. I happened to love the version of the show that featured A.O. Scott of the NY Times and Michael Phillips of the Chicago Sun-Times, but it didn't last very long. And even so, it wasn't really as in-depth as I think you are looking for. It was mostly reviews of movies (very good reviews, though, not soft stuff like "see this movie because it's super-amazing-cool!"), no political analysis or anything like that.

Sorry to disappoint!

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

@Jamie

I don't think there is a complete list yet....

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

Rick & Jamie,

There isn't a complete list of the cast of August which has been announced as yet. Internet rumors are saying the the cast will be announced on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 to coincide with the end of Cannes (but that is not set in stone)...

May 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermed

@med

thanks ... I'll be checking it out

May 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

@Liz
thank you for your reply. I have seen some old siskel and ebert.
It's a pity that something more analytic about films doesn't exist. simple reviews can be quite superficial and they spend way too much time on describing the plot.
thanks again.

May 28, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterele

ele: I think the closest thing to what you're asking after that currently has TV airing is Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe (UK).

May 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Nathaniel, are you planning on seeing Hemingway and Gellhorn? If you see it, could you please review it or at least provide a few comments on it?

Thanks!
