Princess Naomi

It's the first official image of Naomi Watts as Princess Diana in Caught in Flight (2013)

I don't think I could survive another British Icon Impersonation Oscar Win just yet. Not after The Queen (06) and The King's Speech (10) and The Iron Lady (11). Imagine four winners in just seven years -- it's not even tough to imagine. Stop the madness! We just celebrated Independence Day but AMPAS wishes we hadn't destroyed all that good British tea in 1773.

Are you looking forward to Naomi becoming Lady Diana? If this one doesn't work out for her she's also attached to another future biopic about Gertrude Bell called Queen of the Desert. That one will be directed by Werner Herzog and thus sounds instantly promising... even if it's still sort of no sure thing.

English royalty fatigue!!

Am I looking forward to Naomi Watts as Princess Di? Yes because Di is interesting as far as royals go and most of all because Watts needs a starring role that will get her awards attention. She's fabulous.

But do I also wish that this English obsession would go away? Yes. I blame it on the accent-- AMPAS loves "classy" performances and nothing screams "classy" like a British royal accent.

Three times and you're out: Mulholland Dr, 21 Grams, I Heart Huckabees?—Naomi Watts deserves to remain a constant in our movie watching lives.

I love Naomi Watts but I'm not interested in this because Diana isn't actually interesting at all. Sort of an uninteresting woman who waltzed through a life full of spectacular events, which I think is exactly what is wrong with most biopics... Major event, major event, major event, major event, but where is the character?

To me, she looks more Tina Brown. I think Jessica Chastain looked more Diana.

Wait so Princess shook the hands of AIDS victims, stepped near minefields and told her kids that it's ok to eat at McDonalds but she's not interesting (I was like ten when she died, I cried)? And I know that if a bio focused on those things will be boring but making her into a 'her weakness is man' character is going to be problematic.

Also, I wonder how this biopic will affect the Royal Family's new found popularity.

I love Naomi and would love to see her on the movie radar in a major way .. hopefully, this movie might make it for her... but I agree... Diana's life was NOT that interesting.

July 5, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

I'm not Naomi's biggest fan, but Lady Di had such a life that I'll probably watch it. However, according to IMDB, it only deals with a secret affair she once had with a doctor. Not precisely the most thrilling plot...

I don't mind biopics, what I hate is the Academy constantly awarding them.

I sincerely hope they won't try to pass off Naomi as 19, the age Diana was when she got engaged. I don't even think Streisand level lighting could help her with that.

Oh, and Diana wasn't interesting? Ridiculous. Sure, not every day, but who is?

I really want to see the Hertzog movie. Interesting character, actress, director. Gertrude Bell was a contemporary and parallel to Lawrence of Arabia. Maybe the Diana movie will create enough interest and also-ran regret that Watts will get a higher level of recognition for the Herzog film.

Yes, British royalty biopics are becoming a bit blase, but I will sure as hell watch this for Naomi Watts, who I think is unduly ignored amongst the movie-going public. As someone mentioned earlier--Mulholland Drive, 21 Grams, I Heart Huckabees--plus other awesome performances in King Kong, We Don't Live Here Anymore, The Painted Veil, Mother and Child, Funny Games, Fair Game, etc...she's a very underrated actress and really needs something high-profile for people to take notice of her. I've always thought it was weird how she's remained so under-the-radar when she's had such high-profile hits (The Ring (and its sequel), King Kong).

I adore Naomi and find Diana to be an endlessly fascinating figure but I'm not feeling that official still or the set photos that have come out so far. It just looks like Naomi went to the hairdresser and asked for "The Diana". She looks nothing like her. But then, neither did Michelle Williams when set photos of My Week with Marilyn surfaced, so who knows. Plus I suppose it isn't JUST about the physical. There are a plethora of things that go into something like this.

Also, how fun is it that next year we're going to have films where both Naomi and Nicole Kidman are playing iconic princesses. Speaking of, I can't wait to see Kidman in costume as Grace Kelly. *drool*

2013 will be a fantastic yearfor actresses noami wats as prince diana, meryl is agoust oscage, marion cotillard in lowlife and asghar farhadi untiltled project, sandra in gravity,...

Lead Actress 2013 will be tremendously more competitive than 2012. It's not merely the big names, but also the juiciness of the projects they're all attached to!

We have the greatest of the greatest in competition next year (as far as the combination of popularity and Oscar glory comes to mind). What is worse for the "lesser human beings" is that most of these names have not 1, but 2 or more juicy sounding projects next to them.

Meryl Streep & Julia Roberts: "August: Osage County"
Cate Blanchett: "Carol", Untitled Woody Allen Project, 2 Terrence Malick Projects;
Kate Winslet: "Labor Day", "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society"
Nicole Kidman: "Grace of Monaco" (yes, the confirmed it will begin filming later this year); "The Railway Man"

The popularity of these names alone is strong enough to kill all that stands in their way.

And then there's Naomi Watts and her "Caught in Flight". If she's good in it, I personally don't have a problem. I like the sensitivity in her eyes, it's quite special.

BY THE WAY, "Therese Raquin" has been moved from an unknown 2013 release to a concrete December 28, 2012 release.

If only Glenn Close had stayed to play the mom! Momentum alone would have won her the Supporting Actress Oscar.

Last but not least, is the world prepared for a Cinematic British Royalty to win on the men's side too? => A. H. playing A. H. :)

aaron -- to me her best performance outside of mulholland dr is easily The Painted Veil. Such an underrated film, another one killed by a weak "must compete for oscar!" release date.

yavor & amir -- 2013 does sound exciting but i hope 2012 starts catching up. There's bound to be something exciting that we don't know we should be excited about just yet ;)

The Academy loves Lange but at the cost of Annette Bening?

July 6, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter4rtful

Naomi looks stunning. Best of luck to her with this.

The film is called "Diana" now, not "Caught in Flight."

July 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKieran

@4rtful

let's not kid ourselves :)

my words concern Glenn Close alone, not the meat behind that role (if there's any meat at all)

with Lange it in, mediocre or phenomenal, she's not getting any awards, considering the 2 Oscars next to her name.

July 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Yavor's "greatest of the greats" to be potentially competing for lead actress in 2013 includes a handful of 40 somethings (Roberts,Watts, Blanchett, Kidman), one 60-something (Streep) and Kate Winslet...a great combination I think! Also, have Watts, Blanchett and Kidman...all 3...ever gone head to head in competition for lead awards in the same year?
