It's the weekend. What are your movie plans?

What's on your cinematic mind? Movie theater outing? If so will it be the Bourne Sequel, Meryl Marital Mania or "other"?

I wanted to watch 'Red Hook Summer', but I hate the nearest theater where it's playing. Maybe I'll watch Hope Springs, since I've heard great things about it.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConrad

Having just seen Hope Springs... I am sort of shocked to say... But I think Meryl and Tommy both have good chances for an Oscar nomination if it is a weak year!

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Double feature of Ruby Sparks and The Campaign.

My plan is to finally see "The Dark Knight Rises" and maybe "The Bourne Legacy," but that's assuming the weather cooperates. If not, then I have about six movies saved to my hard drive that I have yet to screen ("The Tree of Life," "Drive," "Our Idiot Brother," "Blue Velvet," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and the "Mother's Day" remake).

On another note, can we have at least a five-year period where Streep goes un-nominated?

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Troy - no we cannot. She needs to be nominated every year!! :)

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTLove

I've also heard great things about Meryl, the only question is wether she can be nominated after they finally gave her the third Oscar that alluded her for so long.. What do you guys think?

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConrad

I had a crappy day at work yesterday and it was raining and I went home and watched Red Beard and god it was just the perfect film for me in that moment. I love those little cinema/mood confluences! Totally restored my faith in humanity.

Might keep the Red theme going and go see Red Lights tomorrow as it has Sigourney and Cillian and because sometimes terrible reviews kind of make me more interested in seeing a film.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSVG

Really do want to see the new Meryl film. And Bourne Legacy. We'll see.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

My plans involve Mike Leigh naked, Pedro Almodóvar doing Peter Coyote, and the colors trilogy.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter4rtful

I'm going to try to make a screening of Chinatown is playing on Sunday night. I'm quite sure that neo-noir LA looks a lot cooler in 35mm than my tv.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCasey Fiore

I think that just because Meryl won her third has no bearing on future nominations.....just any future wins

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Spending the weekend with Meryl, duh.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJordan

Jamie -- hmmm. I'd disagree. it seems like *just* the time when they'd take a wee break if they were ever going to take one. as in unless it's impossible to ignore. It doesn't seem to me that post that year she just said they'd feel any love hangover

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternathanielr

spending the weekend with Meryl, can't go wrong with that woman, and "Hope Springs" looks really good.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarl

One would be foolish to ever count Streep out of the game. Are we expecting powerhouse performances this year from who??? Linney? Hunt? Smith?

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Besides... Winning 2 oscars never hurt her chances on nominations before...

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Viola Davis won't back down.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter4rtful

If you're a Meryl fan you should check out last night's Watch What Happens Live - it was really fun!

I am hoping to finally see Beasts of the Southern Wild this weekend - Ruby Sparks and Hope Springs can wait.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

It is such a weak year for actresses. I can honestly see her getting in easily. Remember, most of the academy voters are old and this film is tailor made for them.

Right now, I'm thinking Wallis, Knightley, Hunt, Linney and Streep.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJordan

I'm catching up on some random classics that I've never seen. I just watched Some Like It Hot for the first time and confusingly, I think I'm in love with Josephine.

Also on the docket are Bull Durham, The Wild Bunch, and North by Northwest. Busy weekend (and by busy I mean long nights in hotel rooms).

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrady

People, can we wait until the end of the year and until we've actually seen a lot of movies that haven't been released yet before declaring it a "weak year" for actresses? This happens every year, and it drives me crazy because it's almost never true.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLiz N.

You all forgot about Williams in Take This Waltz. Fantastic performance.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeau

Will be trying to see TDKR for a third time (second in IMAX) but in the midst of completing my own short film, so we'll see.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel Armour

Will be watching some films from the SIght & Sound poll that I haven't gotten around to yet. First up: Ugetsu Monogotari.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNicholas Girling

Streep's recent Oscar won't change the voters' love affair with her. Maybe she won't get nominated this year, but I believe there's no way she'll be ignored for August: Osage County next year!

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarcos

Really want to check out Red Hook Summer this weekend, but doubt I'll have time. A local theater is doing a Miyazaki series, so I might try to hit up something there too. Won't get to the big studio new releases until next week, so any other movies I take in will just be whatever I have lying around the house, most likely.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRoark

Watched Warrior last night on Netflix and it was amazing. Great performances all around and even though you know all the steps (like you do with every sports movie), I surprised at how emotional it played and how hard it ended up hitting me. I know many will disagree, but I'd put it up there next with The Fighter in terms of quality. Really surprised it wasn't a bigger hit financially and it definitely deserved to be a contender during last year's awards season.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVal

Citizen Kane and Vertigo on DVD.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoe Banks

It's either the new "Bourne" or "Total Recall"

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

@Jaragon

I beg you not to see Total Recall.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter4rtful

im seeing red hook summer tomorrow with a q and a with spike after. I wanna see killer joe again. so good. best movie of the year.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJosh

Holy Motors will come out here at my area in about 2 weeks. Really looking forward to it.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertombeet

Killer Joe...I can't wait. Friedkin is ripe for a resurrection and Matthew is blazing hot this year.

August 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

Gosh, I hated Hope Springs and I think Meryl gave her worst performance ever in it. I hope she's not nominated so I don't have to rewatch her next year.

August 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdinasztie

Olympics all the way. Norway is in the women´s handball finale and other Norwegian athletes will compete for gold today. So no movies this week. And the Olymics end thi Sunday as well

I saw the Dark Knight Rises a couple of weeks ago. It was like watching an Opera: long, dramatic with a little fun, building up to the twisty end, touching and the last time will we see Batman for a very long time. Magic Mike was surprisingly funny and good. McConaughey is actually really good in this.

Total Recall because of the buzz about the acting skills of Kate Beckinsales hair ;) and Bourne is a given must see

August 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermanuel

I don't if it's just me, but it's been kind of a bum summer at the movies. I saw Avengers and Prometheus, but there haven't been any other major movies opening urging me towards the multiplex, and there don't seem to be any on the horizon.
Fortunately, there's the repertory where I saw Ken Russell's amazing Music Lovers a couple of nights ago, and my recently purchased copies if Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. I hadn't seen Sunrise in 15 years or so. It's so wonderful!
I'm also planning to watch the Three Couleurs soon (a Christmas gift that's still languishing on the shelf), so this summer could be my summer of Delpy. 2 Days in New York opens soon.

Not even Collin Farrell's hotness can save the horrendous "Total Recall" re-make. Instead of the orginal's Mars setting we get a future Earth made up of recycled "Blade Runner" sets but not the ugly production design, the endless fist fight, flying car chases and huge explosions can save this movie from mind numbing dullness.

August 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

It's The Meryl for me, really a no-brainer. Looks like a fun and interesting movie.

August 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

Hope Springs is great... but do not expect it to be a comedy as the ads seem to want to show... it does have comic parts, but it is a serious slice of life.

Even though this is a movie aimed at us more mature adults ( read over 50 ) ... younger people should see it and realize that married for 30+ years can become rote ... this movie deals with the way to keep a marriage from becoming very stale and one needs to keep the feelings for everything a marriage means in the forefront.

The 3 actors are great in their roles... Streep is not the strong lady she generally portrays and she does it very successfully .. Jones has never been better in a very real life way .. and Steve Carell (sp? ) is wonderfully subdued , but strong in his role. Much better movie than I anticipated. Thought it was going to be like It's Complicated, which was OK, but a "fluff" movie.

August 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

Joe Banks - sight & sound would be so proud!

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

@Jaragon

I begged you not to see it.

August 12, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter4rtful

We saw Bourne. I thought it was clever and gripping. I liked the sideways take on the Bourne story. Rachel Weisz gets more beautiful every year. I loved the supporting cast- Donna Murphy, Hemingway from Midnight in Paris, Oscar Isaac (or is it the other way around?) It gave the story depth.

Possible spoiler speculation: Rachel said there were only 6 of Renner's team left: but I only counted 5. Renner, guy in the cabin, girl on the subway, guy in the sidewalk cafe, guy on the boat dock. Who did I miss?
