Hollywood Elsewhere RIP film critic Judith Christ
New York Times brilliant composer, EGOT winner and Pulitzer Prize recipient Marvin Hamlisch of A Chorus Line fame died at 68. Hamlisch was a frequent Oscar presence with 12 nominations over the course of his career but his 3 wins all came during the ceremony in 1974 for adapted score The Sting (1973) and song and score for The Way We Were. (1973). His last film score for The Informant (2009) won him lots of fresh praise and one assumes very nearly a 13th Oscar nomination since it scored other awards season kudos.

Fallout from Showgirls stung his rep for the rest of his short stinted Hollywood career. Their insistence on remaking his entire American filmography certainly feels like death for him and his fans, especially me.
No actor has won an Oscar for a Spielberg directed performance. I don't see Lewis breaking the pattern. Joaquin Phoenix on his third nomination with the Devil's backing — I'm not sure who or what stands in his way?

Wow, I'm über excited about The Master. :) It will be so fantastic, for sure. I think it can win BP & BD and OSP easily with something like Cinematography and Editing. I hope Phoenix can win it, but I'm looking at this photo of DDL and I've become really uncertain. People orgasm even over this picture and yelling Oscar. Let's be honest: Daniel Day-Lewis is the Kirk Lazarus of real life.
And here's my wish for the next Oscar year: I WISH THERE WAS ONE, JUST ONE YEAR (after 1999) WHEN NO BIOPIC PERFORMANCE WINS THE OSCAR.
It freaking blows my mind that Laura Linney or Bill Murray might get an Oscar for a BIOPIC. I feel, though that HPOH will suck like My Week With Marilyn.
I was ecstatic about Meryl this year, but she was fantastic and Meryl so I didn't mind, otherwise I hated every bio winner since Marion.
dinasztie- The last year in which none of the four acting winners were playing a real-life person was 1997, so your frustration is justified.
I think that DDL will have to earn career-best reviews in order to win a third Oscar so recently after his second, especially with potential tough competition coming from Joaquin Phoenix and John Hawkes. I will say, however, that if any living actor can pull of a third Best Actor win, it's definitely DDL.
I kind of don't like the concept of DDL winning a third Oscar. There are too many other actors who deserve at least just one.
About DDL as Lincoln, (My Thought) I hear its very good, and we all know that he only does "certain" scripts, like the ones that put him in contension for La Oscar.

Harvey Weinstein will back off pushing The Master for Oscars if it proves the least bit "controversial" with voters. It's what he's done for the last 10-15 years. He's much more comfortable promoting safe fare.
I don't like the idea of DDL winning a third oscar either, but it would show how much easier it is for a man to win three than a woman if it took Meryl ([quote]the greatest living actress[/quote]) as long as it did.

Yes, Daniel Day-Lewis is respected enough, but is he really loved for winning a third Oscar? He didn't win in 2002 even with a BFCA and a SAG and he didn't got Oscar nominations for acting performances in "The Last of the Mohicans" and "The Boxer" even with a good response by awards and critics peers. This is a list for the winners of more of two Oscars:
-Katherine Hepburn (1933, 1967, 1968 and 1981)
-Ingrid Bergman (1944, 1956 and 1974)
-Walter Brennan (1936, 1938 and 1942)
-Jack Nicholson (1975, 1983 and 1997)
-Meryl Streep (1979, 1982 and 2011)
The only actor who won in short time was Brennan and it was when the stunts performers can vote for the acting categories. Bergman's third was an special situation when her biggest competition was a foreign languaga performance and a performer in a raunchy comedy -And finally this triumph cost Bergman's Oscar in "Autumn Sonata"- Even respected and iconic performers like Streep and Nicholson took time and number of defeats for a third Oscar -In the case of Streep's took 29 years!!!- Day-Lewis need:
-Career's best reviews and right now the bar is too high after his performance in "There Will Be Blood" -Considerate by many one of the best performances for the history of the Oscars- He needed to surparse himself and that's a difficult choice -Say what you want of TIL as a film, but the reception of Sttreep's performance was great, even TIME considerate her Margaret Thatcher the best performance of the year-.
-Contrary to Best Actress category, he need an excellent film for compete. 8 of the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Actor were in films with 80+ in Metacritic - and 7 of them were in BP. nominees.
-And last but not least, weak competition. Maybe Hanks isn't at the same league in versatility and talent, but he had the fame and liekable presence and even with that, he didn't win in 2000 for, considerate by many, one of his best performances and lost with the new hot commodity as Russell Crowe was that year. The competition will be the principal factor for Day-Lewis aspirations to a third Oscar and right now we have:
-Joaquin Phoenix: Comeback story + Potential "Career's best performance" + Prestige + Harvey's fact + ¨Potential BP nominee
-Hugh Jackman: Tony Winner + An excellent dramatic role in a musical + Likeable factor + Potential BP nominee
-John Hawkes: Character actor with the baittiest role + Feel-good movie of the year? + Diseable character
-Denzel Washington: Excellent return + Tony Winner + The most respected black actor who's also an star for his own + Box Office sucess
-Brad Pitt: Afterglow effect + Excellent run + Harvey's fact
And even without considerate Joel Edgerton, Bill Murray, Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling, between others. After saying that, I think Day-Lewis will be nominated for almost all the precursors awards and Oscar, but not winning anything -With the possible exception of the Globe-. His competition is strong enough, his role, albeit "baity", isn't exactly Oscar-favorite -They nominated more british royalty, famous celebrities or villains than USA presidents- and Spielberg isn't a guaranteed for Oscars.
P.D.: I know Washington has two Oscars like Day-Lewis, but I think a possible narrative in favor for Washington than Day-Lewis:
-Being the first Black actor with three Oscars -One of them in supporting-
-Return with a dramatic role
-Victory in stage and winning a Tony
-BO success with "Safe House"
But like anyone said: "Right now, I didn't know anything"
FYI: I don't reject Day-Lewis yet -Actually he's second in my predictions for nominations-, but for winning the Oscar, it's difficult to win especially after a second Oscar recently and with an iconic performance in recent memories by AMPAS. The bar is too high to surparses and the competition is fierce with Hollywood stars -Jackman, Pitt, Gosling-, brillliant thespians -Washington, Phoenix, Hawkes-, brilliant roles -Murray, Cooper- and even few surprises.
I'm sad to hear that The Great Gatsby is delayed. But then I thought Moulin Rouge was moved to Summer as well (?) so I still have my hopes up that it has no other problem besides production.
I want phoenix to win this year for the master, ddl has two already and if streep took 29 years to win her third , plus i don't think the academy will give another actor a third oscar after giving an actree a third just last year, give others a chance to win their first , i'm rooting for phoenix this year.
Get that third Oscar. Mr. Lewis! Goodness gracious!
