Christian's A Nympho

.
JA from MNPP here. When you think of Christian Slater, what's the first thing you think of? This question assumes you're old enough to know who the hell Christian Slater is and maybe recall when he was known for things, of course.
.
I assume most people think of his "Jack Nicholson by way of James Dean" riffing in Heathers. Or maybe you're really cool and Gleaming the Cube or Pump Up the Volume hit you like a mack truck. Me, I've got brain issues - I immediately think of The Legend of Billie Jean (but then that's a film that's always near the surface of my brain, any time, anywhere).
.
Anyway if Lars Von Trier has his way in a post-Nymphomaniac world you're going to think of Christian Slater in a different way - he's just cast the actor to play Charlotte Gainsbourg's father in that promises-to-be-controversial next flick of his, which will document, according to Lars, the entire sexual life of a woman, from her childhood to old age. Since I have seen a Lars Von Trier movie before, I know to be worried.

Good for you Christian!! :-)

My fav perf of his was in that mid 90's Marisa Tomei / Rosie Perez drama Untamed Heart.
He was actually very good in that!

Why are people paying attention still to Von Trier? Outside of new Bjork music, Dancer in the Dark, is a dreadful concept for a movie, watching Bjork get bullied for 2 hours and 20 minutes, then lynch her—and Roger Ebert told the truth when he says, there's no reason for Dogville to be 3 hours, none.

I honestly stopped following his work after it and just to care enough about every other new hype from him.

My shameful secret: until I was about fourteen, I was absolutely certain that Christian Slater was my soulmate. I had a Slater Shrine in my bedroom and everything.

Ah, youth.

Slater had a decent run in the late '80s/early-to-mid '90s, and I've actually always found him to be somewhat underappreciated (as an actor, cause he was a relatively big star back then). My favorite performance of his is definitely "Pump Up the Volume." I have issues with the movie itself, but he's not one of them.

I'm not exactly a nut for Von Trier (I'm agnostic on Breaking the Waves (B-), but actually really enjoyed Melancholia (A) and haven't seen any of his other efforts), but this made my day. His work in Heathers is great charismatic lead actor stuff and I really enjoyed his True Romance work, but post 1993, his career wound up going so far down it was like falling from Everest. Hopefully this encourages other talented directors to start trying with him.

I personally liked Christian a lot in Pump Up The Vole, True Romance and Heathers. Hard Rain and Broken Arrow were some of his bigger movies that unfortunately didn't bring him the much deserved acclaim. He's now kind of C grade. His last halfway decent performance was in the series "My Own Worst Enemy" and the feature "Dolan's Cadillac". His LAST good movies were Very Bad Things and Hard Rain, it then went rapidly downhill from there.

However, I'm looking forward to seeing the new von Trier. Now even more, knowing that my youth idol, slater, is starring.
