Congratulations to the WGA Nominees

Before approaching the Writers Guild Nominations with Oscary enthusiasmbe forewarned: only guild members are eligible for these prizes which discounts a good chunk of the movies one might otherwise expect to see honored each year. Hollywood isn't nearly as averse to working with non-guild writers as they are about non-unionized actors (Beasts of the Southern Wild was the only significant "ineligible" situation when the SAG nominees were announced a month ago). One of the reasons for this is surely the prevalence of writer/directors who are often members of the DGA without being members of the WGA.
The benefit of this is that by their script eligibility rules they are forced to award films that have been largely ignored in the grand scheme of year end hoopla. The curse is that when you are nominated from a smaller field of potentials it might not feel as notable.

Typically we only here of what's been declared ineligible so it's tough to know what other films were competing although I'd feel worse for actor/screenwriter Reid Carolin's absence for Magic Mike above if he'd also played one of the Cock-Rocking Kings of Tampa. That'd be putting it all on the line for your movie!

That adapted screenplay list has four of the five nominees at least. Perks could easily get replaced by Les Miz, Beasts or Deep Blue Sea, though it's not an inconceivable surprise.
The original screenplay list, though? On that list, Zero Dark Thirty is assured, and Moonrise is a near lock. Beyond that, I'd say the ineligible Django and Amour WILL get nominated and the final slot is a toss up between Looper and The Master.
I'm rooting for One Life to Live to win the Best Daytime Drama Series writing award. ABC is already regretting cancelling it. Superlative writing on this series.
Why was Anna Karenina ineligible?
Rust & Bone is adapted from the short story by Craig Davidson.
I'm so afraid that PERKS might be replaced come Oscar time. I'm really rooting for PERKS and LOOPER.
Not sure why Perks was such a fav. Got very bogged down and meandering. Didn't see Looper. The Master was a great film that will barely get reflection
Mad Men only got one episode nominated. I guess it's official that the love affair is over.
Agree that PERKS is vulnerable come Oscar nomination morning, but I'm really hoping to see it there. It's the only chance the movie will get the title "Oscar Nominated" in front of it. However I hope Ezra Miller get nominated, he doesn't stand a chance. So screenplay is the movie's only hope.
Original screenplay will usually include a foreign film if it is universally acclaimed and beloved. A Separation got it, so did some of the Pedro Almodovar's movies. So I'm guessing Amour will show up, maybe even paired up with another director nom.
"Looper" was a very clever script with some surprising emotional pull for a sci-fi action picture.
I still think "Flight" is more Movie of the Week problem drama than Oscar material. "Argo" deserves the nomination.
Just had to say that I finally watched The Paperboy last night and I was heavily disturbed by it and REALLY liked it.
Once again, the low scores from the Metacritics AMAZE ME.
I think it was not only Kidman; the whole cast was on fire and they are much more worthy of SAG ensemble nod that most of the actual nominees.
