Our Coven: Hermione

Team Experience is building its own coven of favorite screen witches. Happy Halloween! Here's JA on that know-it-all from Hogwarts.

It's only been two years since the Harry Potter saga ended film-wise and for awhile I felt the need to take a break from it, it having eaten up a good decade of pop-culture and all, but I've got to admit I'm feeling some nostalgia for it these days all the same. And nowhere moreso than with Hermione, always my favorite character (I never stand a chance with the bookish ones, they always win) - what's she up to these days anyway, in between when the Battle of Hogwarts was won and that kid-laden flash-forward? Did she momentarily move to LA to take up robbing the rich and famous? More...

Never one to leave any corner of that world untouched, JK Rowling has actually answered just that question:

Hermione is the only one of the trio that returns to Hogwarts to complete their magical education. She begins her post-Hogwarts career by working in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, where she is instrumental in greatly improving the lives of house-elves; she later moves higher up in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement while ensuring the eradication of oppressive pro-pureblood laws."

So now you know. As good a witch as ever there was, decent and true, keeping on.

Broom? Hermione never could quite master broom-manship; she preferred to cheer on her Quidditch-playing compatriots from the comfort of the stands. She got pretty good at apparition though, and she's been known to ride a Hippogriff now and again

Favorite spell? All of them! Well except the unforgivable ones, or that Divination nonsense.

Familiar? That'd be Crookshanks, who chases Ron's rat around (foreshadowing the romance?).

Pointy hat? The sorting hat, first and foremost. After that she wore a lot of knitted caps (it was always so cold at Hogwarts!)

"Only bad witches are ugly!": Hermione's arc beauty-wise is kind of an extended version of The Princess Diaries - she starts out a frizzy little nerd but three movies later she's the belle of the ball. (With hunky Victor Krum on her arm no less, humina humina!)

Didn't know that about her post-Voldemort era career. The things I learn on this site!

Hermione was always my favorite character of course. Although I did warm to Neville and Luna. I remember reading that the screenwriter Steve Kloves thought part of the reason he got the job was that in talks with JK Rowling, he said that Hermione was his favorite character.

But I'm still annoyed with Rowling for not giving Hermione the future she deserved. I can understand Harry needing a surrogate wizarding family, and being happily absorbed into the Weaselys by marrying Ginny. But Hermione deserves far better than Ron. Victor Krum choose her as his prom date, and later in her life other men of distinction should have been interested in her. She should have had a proper romance as an adult with somebody wonderful. Whenever I think of the ending where she's married to Ron, I grit my teeth and think that's it's not too late for her to divorce him and have a proper life of her own.

I think that Hermione's fans also wish Emma Watson well, and are ready to give up our old thoughts of her as Hermione to watch her succeed in other parts and in a happy career.
